I wish I knew as much about computers as I do the games I play on them, but sadly, that just isn't the case. So, I need your help, please...I'd be forever grateful if you can shed some light on this one.

I downloaded one of the only two C64 emulators that I've found on the net (the other emulator's site was in German or something so I was scared away). However when I try to open it, I get a message saying that a ".DLL" file is missing -- specifically 'D3D9.DLL' is not being found. I have NO CLUE what that's supposed to mean, nor do I have any idea of where to aquire this .DLL file. Heck, I don't even know what a .DLL file does! :embarrassed:

So if anyone has any information as to what I'm supposed to do about this, I'd be unbelievably grateful. I was just so excited when I realized I could play all of my old favorite C64 games again, and once I hit this road block, I felt so disappointed.

Thanks so much for at least reading this.

Which emulator in particular are you trying to use? I've heard good things about Hoxs64 (http://www.hoxs64.com/), but I'm not really a big C64 person (I was a Tandy1000 whore)

D3D9.DLL is a file that should be included in the DirectX distribution, so try reinstalling it. Failing that, try googling the filename for a place to download it (a ton of valid links will pop up).

edit - apparently VICE (http://www.viceteam.org/) is quite good, too.

it's the CCS64 which I downloaded from here (http://www.computerbrains.com/). Where can I get that Hoxs64? Maybe that was at the site written entirely in German? :/

I will try to re-install that DirectX program. Thank you for your help! :D

Where can I get that Hoxs64?

i linked both Hoxs64 and VICE, but they're kinda hard to notice because of the theme :(

oh! haha! oops! I ended up downloading a different emulator (can't remember the name right now), in addition to re-installing that DirectX package (which, as it turns out, was indeed the problem...heh.). Thanks a million again for your advice! I am a happy little gamer now.

And if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go spend the entire night with my new toy. :D

Get VICE (http://www.viceteam.org/) instead.

The newest version of CCS needs DirectX v9.0c or later I believe, so that might be the problem.

Either way, CCS or Vice are the two to go with. Neither are 100% compatible, but between them, they play 100% of C64 emulated games.
