Capcom collects Power Stones
Enhanced versions of Dreamcast brawlers brought together for PSP release later this year.

A pair of oft-overlooked Dreamcast brawlers are getting a second chance at life later this year in the form of a portable compilation. Capcom today announced Power Stone Collection for the PSP, a one-two punch of Power Stone and Power Stone 2. The game is set for a North American release in the fourth quarter of 2006.

The Power Stone series of 3D fighters eschewed the dense layers of strategy one might find in a franchise like Virtua Fighter in favor of a more frantic, lighthearted take on the genre. One of the series' big selling points was its array of interactive environments, which sought to deliver the simple thrill of beating people up with whatever furniture was at hand. For Power Stone 2, Capcom upped the chaos inherent to the series' fights by adding four-player melees to the mix.

Capcom is promising a number of enhancements and revisions for both games, starting with ad hoc wireless multiplayer battles using just one copy of the game. Both titles will also feature a number of new weapons and a new camera system designed with the PSP in mind; players will be able to toggle between wide, close, and midrange views of the action in the middle of a fight.

There are also a number of game-specific enhancements included. The original Power Stone's roster will be joined by the four new characters from Power Stone 2, and the game's interface has also been overhauled with redesigned health bars and arrows on the radar screen indicating the location of loose power stones. For Power Stone 2, Capcom is including an adventure mode that retains the original's item creation mechanic with several new items added to the mix, and a Bomber Battle minigame that wasn't included in the Dreamcast version of the game.

For more on Power Stone Collection, check out GameSpot's full coverage of Capcom's Gamers' Day event.

It's good to see Capcom hasn't forgotten.

They haven't released anything NEW in ages, especially the fighters. Power Stone 1 & 2 were excellent games on the DC, even though they were overshadowed by Soul Calibur. It's good to see them revived for another platform, and it's good to see the good games slowly appear on the PSP. It's going to really be a great handheld in a couple of years.

I don't understand why you think Resident Evil is so great. Maybe the PS2 version was good, but the Gamecube sucked big time.

Powerstone 1 and 2 are good and all...but I'd really prefer to see a Powerstone 3 on a console.

Still, it's one more thing trying to get me to buy a psp.

Uh yeah. Kinda hard to hate one but not the other, or vice versa.

Definitley a great sign though. Not a huge fan of the series, but at least they have a chance to find a bigger audience. That said, Capcom is a bit too port happy on the PSP. Excluding the remade Mega Man games and Monster Hunter, is there anything from their end on the PSP that's original?

Anyway, glad to see that Capcom hasn't forgotten about one of my favorite games. This might even make me buy a PSP.

All they really did was add a new game for Ada, which doesn't evem make a difference in the long run. Or is this just an anti-GC rant.

Hey Hey...is this a RE thread or a POWER STONE thread?? Come on guys, lay off, the series is getting tired and we all know it...it's 4pm...and time for Resident Evil's nap! Do what it says or else it'll cut off your big toe! YEOUCH! that's tender :) *bleeding toe*

Back on topic....it's a shame that this DC exclusive had to be portable...I wish it had a console release (Xbox or PS2 at least)

I think Sony is being greedy with Capcom...then again, this wouldn't be the first time (i.e. Mega man series on PS1 days...and now on PSP...ironica isn't it?)

Oh my god, its like, another port!

Yes Power Stone is a great game. Yes I owned it on the DC, and YES I even have Virtua Tennis on my PSP now. A trend?

This is awesome news. I'm surprised it took them so long to drag this franchise back into the limelight.

Maybe, if this game sells well, it will lead onto Power Stone 3 and we'd all be happy.

I wish Capcom would give the DS a bit more love, i mean we have Deadly Silence and VJDT, but PSP has Street Fighter, 4 Mega Man games, Viewtiful Joe, Monster Hunter, Darkstalkers Chronicle, Power Stone 1+2, Capcom Puzzle World and a Retro Compilation.

I agree. Once I saw this topic, I thought there might be a new PS game but since it's just ports I can play on my DC, there's not use in having it. I thought this might be another game to convince me to get a PSP, but it's just another port :(

I couldn't agree more. I really would like to see some fighters on the DS. Maybe a new Power Stone, or even an origional fighter, some Capcom hasn't done in awhile.

Are you retarded or something?

I never got a chance to play a Power Stone before, so I'm psyched to pick this up (especially considering the DC version of Power Stone 2 is $30 some bucks).

Power Stone 2 has the adventure mode intact, so I'm buyin... Even though I still play my DC versions constantly.

This game seems like it would be more fun now, being portable and all. But this game needs an infrastructure mode. Especially the Adventure Mode.

Sharing items via the web would be pretty interesting. Not to mention the insane 4 player brawls.

Finally, the PSP gets a good port.

-ahem-

Back on topic, I loved both Power Stone games for Dreamcast. It's really good to see them getting another release, as they're a lot different than anything else on the market -- and they're good stuff to boot! I really wish this had internet multiplay as opposed to just local adhoc. Oh well. Here's to hoping for a PS3 (heh) if this sells well.

Here's hoping for an added infastructure mode. If Capcom would add that little bit in, this would be a no brianer.

Considering they didn't get infastructure into SF Alpha 3 Max and are noot going to have it in Moster Hunter PSP, I hate to say this, but NOT GONNA HAPPEN.

Why do developers hate the PSP so much?

Not having some sort of online mode for Monster Hunter is a horrible idea. Nuff' said.

How about we all just cross our fingers for infastructure on this bad boy? ;)

Don't believe the haters man. Halo is by far the best Gamecube game, and the N-Gage port was not too shabby either, especially when played on Live!

In fact, I think you should walk to your nearest EB and tell them about your hate for Halo on the Cube. Make sure you go there when it is busy.

There is a video of the game on IGN, looks like it remains almost entirely intact from it's Dreamcast days.

How's the multiplayer? With how frantic part 2 got with 4 players I would not have thought it would translate well to the smaller psp screen.
