101 levels of pure bliss, the precursor to Bubble Bobble, it's The Fairyland Story. There's hardly any real info on the internet about this game, but basically you control Ptolemy, a little elf hell bent (or perhaps sent by someone) to get back a jewel from an evil dragon. You defeat enemies by turning them into cakes, either you sprinkle them enough times to destroy the cake, or get higher points by dropping the caked enemies on enemies below, if two or more enemies are hit by a cake they turn into coins (or mirrors, of the silver and bronze colors).

There are powerups similar to Bubble Bobble (one brings out the sun, turning all remaining enemies into cakes) and if one enemy is left alive in a level it will eventually disappear on it's own, but be warned much like Bubble Bobble if you stay on a level too long a little red devil with a pitchfork will come down (he's one of last week's Rainbow Islands bosses) and eventually catch up to you unless you can dispatch the enemies that are left on screen quickly. The game starts out simple enough, but the going gets tough in a hurry, some levels require that you plan ahead on which enemies to kill, because some will have to be killed last, you have to ride on their heads to make some jumps due to Ptolemy not having that high of a jump.

All in all if you're a Bubble Bobble fan, give this game a try, the cuteness factor is just as high as Bubble Bobble, plus it's a year older than Bubble Bobble itself.

Wow, this is kind of weird. I've played this game before, but it's almost uncanny how similar this game is to Bubble Bobble... You'd think Taito wouldn't even have bothered with Bubble Bobble when they already had this game, but oh well.

The game has some obvious technical inferiorities compared to Bubble Bobble, especially when it comes to graphics... the sprite movement just doesn't seem as smooth to me. The music also isn't anywhere near as catchy as the Bubble Bobble tunes.

However, the game play is solid. Not quite as much chaos as Bubble Bobble, so you can actually get a bit of strategy going. The levels seem kinda sparse to me, but I haven't gotten very far in the game, so I'm guessing they'll get a little more busy later on.

I'm going to let this ride one more week as it's a pretty fun game and not many people got a chance to play it last week apparently!

Either that or I picked one a little too obscure. LOL

It'll be on Taito Legends 2, there it should get more exposure.

It feels kinda weak but still good and I really liked Don Doki Don NES and Arcade back in the day.... :embarrassed: maybe I'm too spoilt with the newer games in this genre.

Well, at first i sucked terribly, but then i kinda got it. Got up to around level 21, and couldn't seem to best that one with the lives I had. Interesting game though. Is it just me or are the wood castles really easy?

This one didn't really grab me I guess. I played it for a while, and then decided "Why play this, when I can play Bubble Bobble" so I did :)
