OK, here is the deal. I have never been into RPG's, but I really never gave them much of a chance. Recently, I was going through my collection and came across these 2 games. I have never even played either one and I figured it was about time to see what all the RPG fuss was about so I decided I would play one to completion. I know they are both reviewed pretty well, but which one would you recommend I play and why. Thanks for any input.

Chrono Trigger

Fun battle system, Amazing story, Pretty looking graphics (by the SNES's standards), And if i can remember correctly it was pretty funny at times aswell.

Chrono Trigger. That game has such lovable characters along with an amazing storyline that connects to Chrono Cross. Easy Battle system and as Johnny_Rock said it is humorous at times.

The Chrono Trigger/Cross storyline just happens to be my favorite RPG storyline, so I'm definitely biased. But when you play if, you won't regret it!

Y's baby! If not for the gameplay (bumper cars), depth (both books), history (first must have cd game ever), or music/soundtrack. Do it for the fact that Adol would whup Crono's ass!

Everyone should give Chrono a go, even if you don't believe in time travel and junk, and I certainly don't.

I'm going to have to give my vote to chrono Trigger as well. I too am playing through it for the first time and it is fun, exactly what everyone else is saying about it. I didn't find it overhyped at all.

Chrono Trigger. Ys I & II is pretty badly dated. I guess some people get into the "bump into enemies" gameplay, but I thought it was clunky back then and even worse now.

blashemy I think the engine is pretty brillant for fast paced action and also I think ys is a great game which few people get to play , less than chrono.

We've really come a long way, haven't we? From "would you buy this," to "what games should I collect next," and now it's "what games should I play?"

There's a terribly easy answer - just start playing one, see if you like it more than the other, and go with that. Easy.

Wait, I've got a better idea...you buy games and give them to me.

In all honesty I'm with Richter, Ys is still a fun play.

Play Chrono Trigger to prove you're not missing out on anything, and when you need some hardcore video-gaming and a really good plot step up to Ys. :D

Play both. Problem solved!

I hope you're playing the SNES version of Chrono Trigger. The loading time in the PS1 version really got on my nerves.

I would say play Ys I & II first, the games aren't terribly wrong so it won't take too long to get them out of the way. I always found the Y's games much more enjoyable than most of the more popular RPGs out there, they were always simplistic and told a good story.

If you're going to play Ys, you might as well track down the recent PC remake. There's an English-patched version floating around that can even use the music from the TG-16 CD version.

Or you could buy my nice boxed copy of Famicom Ys. Oh, won't somebody buy my nice boxed copy of Famicom Ys?

I only own "Ys III: Wanderers From Ys" for the SNES and felt pretty bad about it. I tried to play it for awhile and I might have gotten off to a bad start or something. Unless I & II are a lot better, I would go with Chrono Trigger. I know it's one of the greatest PRGs and was one of the most talked about for the PS1. Get into Trigger and if it isn't your cup of tea, then go with Ys.

Definitly Chrono trigger. Time travel done right with an amazing story, characters, good battle system (you can run from some monsters!) and a great soundtrack, plus multiple endings!

A PC remake of Y's I & II?

A PC remake of Y's I & II?

Oh yes, such a thing exists. Ys Eternal is the technical name, I believe... See http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/ys/ys.htm .

It used to be available for purchase at http://www.himeyashop.com/ (for a truly unreasonable price), but you can still find it here and there (complete with unofficial English translation).
