Sega CD Imports

I'm going to be buying a Sega CD here in the next could of weeks.

I've also been toying around with the idea of imports on the system. I did a quick search and didn't find anything here, so what do I need to do in order to play import games on a US SCD?

I guess a better question would be: are there any games that are worth importing? I haven't seen much talk of an import scene for the system.

The easiest way is with the Datel Pro Action Replay CDX cart. They show up from time to time on ebay. It plugs into the cartridge slot of the Genesis and allows you to play Japanese Mega CDs on an American Sega CD console. I have also heard there is also a way to burn a CD with the American BIOS on it and put it into an American Sega CD before you replace it with the Japanese disk, but I've never done that before. There are several Mega CD games worth playing. My favorite is Night Striker (a cool shooter converted from the arcade game.)

I actually owned the Datel Pro-CDX and, although it technically works, sometimes its hit and miss. Some games game up right away on the first time, while others took a few couple of tries and still some others just never came up at all.

On the games side themselves, the games that I would recommend are: Urusei Yatsura, Yumimi Mix, 3x3 Eyes and Final Fight. Final Fight is just an uncensored version of the American release. Urusei and Yumimi are your average adventure type, but show what the Mega CD could do in the right hands. Also some other ok games are the a-little-bit-overrated Shadowrun, a little too-overhyped Japanese score in Sonic CD. A good number of Mega CD's also have some nice FMV/anime scenes, but the game itself aiin't too hot (i.e. - Devastator, Anet Futatabi).

Yup, the Sega/Mega CD version of Final Fight is 2-player simultaneous fun :) For each character, they also had a special one-screen stage as a time attack that was specific only to the Sega/Mega CD versions.

3x3 Eyes, unfortunately, isn't too non-Japanese friendly though. I myself made through only understanding about half to 3/4 of it. It's a shame cause it really is a nice RPG.

Shadowrun never had a US release. There was a Shadowrun released on the SNES and Genesis, but they are two totally different games than the Mega CD version. The Mega CD version was the only one to be set in a futuristic Tokyo, rather than in a futuristic Seattle (I BELIEVE it's Seattle) like the other Shadowrun titles. Shadowrun was also the last Mega CD title ever released in Japan.

The best way to have a multiregional Mega CD is to put a MultiBIOS in there. The CD-X isn't great nor is the region conversion software.

Trouble with the Mega CD is, there's some great games, but to experience them all you need a multiregion unit.

Final Fight and Sonic are better is their Japanese versions. And you obviously want the english WD US releases of both Lunars and Popful Mail. And for myself personally, it's nice to be able to pick up a PAL copy of Prince of Persia for a fiver.

So yeah, MultiBIOS is the answer.

I recommend Ninja Warriors (Taito with Zuntata), the whole game is in English too (including the intro), it's so strange that this game never made it to the USA, though there was nothing to translate :/

The japanese weren't the only ones who had surreal games. Check out the smurfs for the PAL version of the sega CD. Its in english and a weird platform game. Those french really love their tiny blue people. Anyone know if it came out for the Japanese market?

Definitely go with the multibios, as it works 100%. You can also make an image of the CD, use one of those utilities out there to change it to the American region, and then burn it back to a CD-R, but that only works about 50% of the time.
