I havnt picked up a PSP yet, but I was hoping that Sony would do something like this. I'll wait for this model instead :)

To be honest... I've got two already, so I would be a tad gutted. I don't actually think it is going to happen that soon - I think Sony need to sort out a few other things before they can spend time redesigning an already pretty nice handheld.

Maybe something for Christmas, I guess, but surely not before?

so instead of lowering the price, is sony just going to release a bunch of modest upgraded units?

this is a start, but relying on UMD media for content is biggest drawback for the PSP

How so? UMDs provide something like 1.8GB of storage space, and it goes much farther given that the screen is far smaller than regular TV screens (and much, much smaller than a HDTV set can provide).

optical media drains batteries

load times on a console are bad enough, on a handheld they should be a crime

proprietary media is not cheap for the end user, unlike standard CDs and DVDs

and the ultimate question, are developers using the extra space to enhance gameplay. i would say at the moment the answer is no. for the most part were getting filler like FMVs. sure a game can feature a soundtrack, but with mp3 and other types of audio compression, there is no pressing need for the extra storage.

now if the new flash model of the PSP can pull data off of a disc and cache it in flash memory, this would improve battery life, and allow the cap to be taken off the processor. i really doubt they will do this however.

One of my gaming mags (EGM?) said that they might go with a microdrive instead. It seems they may not be able to negotiate the price they want on the flash memory.
