Does that bother anyone else? It totally bugs me when people refer to "arcade games" as "arcades." Huge pet peeve. An arcade is a place that you go to to *play* arcade games. "Arcades" are "places," not "games." I dunno why, I guess it's because even though I know they're just being lazy, it still conjures up images of several places around town, instead of what they actually mean.

Folks don't refer to their cars as "dealerships."

"I have 3 dealerships."

"Really where?"

"In my garage."

"..."

Yeah, too much free time today. LOL

I completely agree. I also hate "pinballs" - that's the little ball inside the game. Call it a pinball machine, call it a "pin" like all the chic pin collectors do, I don't care. I've even done it myself a few times just because I know people will recognize it. That doesn't make it right!

An arcade is a place and a pinball is a small round thing.

I remember a crotchety old neighbor always telling us kids to "go play Pac-Man".

So uh, yeah.... go play Pac-Man. :D

This is similar to people who equate "Nintendo" with ALL videogames... :eek 2:

And "the Sega" with the Genesis, and "the Playstation" with the PS2 (and all other modern gaming systems)... annoying indeed.

Pins I like playing, arcades I like visiting, but I don't play Nintendo or Sega, or arcades. Two are companies, one's a place people! C'mon!

I agree with you in principle, but seeing how much time we've spent in this very forum lamenting the death of the arcade as a location, I guess I'm not that picky about the other use of it. LOL

BTW why were Atari carts called "tapes" back then? Did people think they looked like 8-track tapes? Did people think there was tape inside of them?

Yes on both counts. Even throughout the 90s when I was buying 2600 carts here and there, 90% of the sellers referred to them as "tapes." LOL
