While looking through the files on the Star Wars Episode 1 racer disk for Dreamcast (using the serial cable) I noticed two files named SW_DISCO.AFS and SW_PARODY.AFS

Heres the cool bit, the first one is a Disco remix of the starwars theme tune (very cool) and the other is a parody of Copacabana by Barry Manilow called "Star Wars Cantina". These songs are not accessible via the game as far as I know and are normally inaccessible to PCs too, so in effect they were hidden very well. And to top it all off, they were not standard files, but encrypted AFS files (sega's special sounds format).

I also found a picture of Bill Gates on the game "Toy Commander", hidden very deep down and disquised as a .txt file. Very strange.

Anyone else have any amazing tales like this?

P.S. I can post those MP3s if there is enough interest

Hmm, very interesting. I'm guessing they are unused bits which were originally planned to be included within the game. Would be interested in hearing some star wars music though

Astrosmash for the intellivision has the Asteroids game hidden in the programming, but is normally inaccessible.

And then there's the Arwing enemy in Zelda: OoT.

While we're here, sonic riders has got the "Hang on" and "Super Hang on" theme tunes, but they are not used in game. Also japanese voice files are included but not selectable ingame. It's either laziness, a secret, accident or just a developers joke.

Actually, many GBA games (as an example) use the same codebase for all regions, but have things dummied out depending on the where it's sold in.

I think the US version of Zone of the Enders for GBA has German and French text, but you can't select them; but you can on the Euro version, though. It's not uncommon for programmers to do that, it's easier to just comment out some stuff. :)

This ticks me off because I could get an English/Spanish/French title made by Nintendo (as an example) but they dummy out anything but English on their games. Pah. I'm sure the French Canadians don't like that one bit. :P

Well a slightly different version of the Star Wars Disco is actually in Lego Star Wars (its a semi hidden room off the beaten path in the Kamino level, that when you do the simple puzzle you get to see a disco and the robots dancing to the music in the room). It only plays about a minute or so and its 'synth'd' where there are the brass accompanyments in this version.

I'm not sure if the Star Wars Cantina is anywhere else. I keep thinking the Special Edition Single releases that came out when the Special Editions were released to VHS a few years back might have had one or even both of them on them, but I don't have mine with me to tell you for certainty.

There's all the "Stop N Swop" stuff packed into Banjo-Kazooie, but you can access it all with a Gameshark so I'm not sure if that counts.

Wasn't the japanese release of Legend of Zelda: Super Neato Minish Cap the same way? IIRC it had the entire english script disabled in it and people were trying to find a way to hack the rom to enable it before the US version came out.

The "Star Wars Disco Mix" is actually Meco's (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/ref=br_ss_hs/102-8716195-8304106?platform=gurupa&url=index%3Dmusic&field-keywords=meco) version of the Star Wars theme, which came out in 1977 (I believe) and was actually a radio hit for a while.

My guess is, they were both songs that the developers listened to that they couldn't get the rights to to include as extras.

I remember messing with the region setting on a Genesis emulator and it changed the Streets Of Rage title screen to the original "Bare Knuckle" title screen when set on Jap.

It's nothing special now, but when I first got into emulation years ago I was amazed.

LOL That hit close to home!

Actually, no. Spain Spanish is NOT the same as Mexico/Latinamerican Spanish. To put it in simple terms, imagine having to play, let's say... Phantasy Star IV in medieval/olde English. It's pretty much the same way that Canadian French is not the same as France French. :)

Castlevania sotn has a ton of stuff hidden away.

I remeber ripping the sounds from the game and finding several unused music tracks, a ton of unused voices including a bunch for maria that makes it appear they originaly had her turn evil/against you in the end, as well as a priest "blessing" alucard, some text if the sucubus defeats you and lots of unused random voices.

also theres a couple dummied out famillars that were in the japanese version and a few dummiied out areas AND all the japanese voices are still on the disk

I made wave files of alot of the tracks that I could put up soewhere if someone wanted em.

oh, two more "unfinished" games...

Blood Omen 2
Knights of the Old Republic 2

They left tons of unfinished material on the discs that hint at alternate endings and expanded storylines that were cut down at the last minute.

A 4K binary version of this has been floating around the Internet for years, with the extra 2K containing Space War. I'm not sure where this version came from since I checked my cart and found it to be 2K. Perhaps there are some 4K carts out there?

Not sure, i read about it in the ORG.

An old thread revived, yay, might as well chip in. How bout the empty half Bunker level in Goldeneye 007,where the game incorrectly loads and you start in the control room. I've only had it happen once so it is a rare event. Kind of creepy too in its own way. Also for some reason, one day when I plugged in my expansion pack into Diddy Kong Racing, it gave me everything in the game completed all levels and such, can't explain that one, of course my friend erased the file so,yea that never happened again. Funny how both are Rareware games.

How are these inaccessible if we're talking about them? ;)

Just being hidden in a directory (or on the root of the disc even) is no big deal, it's still "unused content" for me. I wish more developers would do it; there's lots of gems out there that likely won't see the light of day.

I was just reading about how an easter egg in the Dreamcast version of Rayman 2 is present but seemingly inaccessible in the N64 and DS ports.

And apparently the NSF version of Protoman's theme from Mega Man 2 (or was it 3?) is considerably extended over the version you can actually hear in-game.

Well, one can argue "normally" inaccessible by means of normal game play. You either have to count on the game making the rare error of accessing incorrect data or getting a Gameshark. Lets not forget the huge left behind Citadel test level that Rare said was inaccessible and not anywhere on the cartridge. Come to think of it, how bout all the inaccessible things in Perfect Dark, that list is a bit long as well, damn you Rare and your left behind easter eggs and unused content.

But I do agree with you, there is "unused content" that should and hopefully in the future will be dug up or found and put to use somehow *cough* Ocarina of Time Disk Drive Boot Instructions *cough*

I've never seen anything about this after years of being active on various sites related to the 2600 such as AtariAge.

Are you sure you aren't thinking about the Astromash example already given? That's the only hidden game that is normally inaccessible in a classic game that I'm aware of. A search just now also doesn't reveal any mentions of it.

You can actually hear it in game, just quickly pause the game right when you drop into a room with a Protoman battle.

For the full 1st ending music, do the controller 2 trick (Right+A?) at the ending when the tree scrolls on-screen. It'll pause so you can hear the whole song (which normally gets cut off).

Or else listen to the NSF of it. Strider on the NES also has a longer 1st ending song that gets cut off in-game.

Found these when I was browsing PSX *.xa audio files a long time ago.

Mega Man Legends - Original Japanese credits theme is still there (STR0728)

Mega Man Legends 2 - Lots of Japanese dialog hidden in the audio, a few scenes worth at least

I could have sworn that Iris's theme from MMX4 was present as CD audio or possibly XA on one of the MM games other than X4, but I can't seem to find it right now.

Also, in Final Fantasy VII, there's an odd character at the bottom of the well in Corel Prison. You can't see him because he's behind the treasure chest. I'm trying to find a rip of the background graphics to show it, but I can't seem to find it at the moment.

Unreal Tournament 2003 had a rather *ahem* strange unused resource. In the static meshes for DM-Junkyard, or at least that's where I heard it came from, there is a shiny, gold, well... here's a screenshot.

Kind of NSFW... (http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4124/4836676748_04462c0830_b.jpg)

You would never see it in the game, but considering that the game shipped with UnrealEd and Epic encourages modding, it was only a matter of time. This shot is actually from a mutator that reuses the mesh. It's called Goldmember II and it gets bigger as you accumulate more kills. I remember messing with the maximum size parameter and making it big enough to fill a map. Yeah, those were some fun times.

slapdash
07-27-2010, 11:39 PM
Ha ha... Goldmember II might be an homage to C-3PO's mysterious appendage on one of the old Star Wars trading cards. See http://www.snopes.com/movies/films/c3po.asp if you're not familiar with it.
