Last place in the world I was really expecting to see an arcade game, this Modern/Mid Century Homes show in Cincinnati. Think antiques, but mod. I'm there with the wench and what did we see but one of these...

That's a cocktail Data East Astro Fighter. Not a stunning game, but a fairly fun post Space Invaders game. The table was in beautiful shape, everything worked, no burn-in and they only wanted $500, which, some people might think is high, but for a game of that vintage in that condition I was willing to pay.

Something wasn't sitting quite right and we made a couple of laps around the room while I tried to figure it out. Well, on the third lap, I really got to checking the machine out and saw the deal breaker. The attract screen was completely fucked. It would start to draw the A in Astro Fighters, then two yellow lines would streak down the screen and nothing else happened.

I'm not an ace at repairing these things and I don't know if I could have just burnt new ROMs or if there was a bigger problem, but something told me to walk away. I guess if it'd been a better game, I could have lived with a flaw like that which really doesn't effect gameplay. As it stands, I don't know how much I'd have played it anyway (it plays like a cross between Space Invaders and Activision's Megamania) but it would have looked pretty swell in the new house.

Still, I can't help but feel a little pang of regret. I do have a soft spot for the pre Pac-Man games. I know I probably made a wise choice, but there's always that "what if?"

I probably would have too. It seems like those old, dedicated cabs are much harder to work on.

I just don't see the point of owning a cab (or cocktail or whatever) that I don't love.

I would have pointed out to them that it didn't work, and then made a considerably lower offer :)

Yeah, I was kinda headed in that direction. Guy basically countered with "that's why I usually just leave it credited up." (Nice way to get burn in, Einstein.) Ahh well, if it was a game I really cared about, I'd probably have worked him a little harder.

In many cases, it's the same reason that some people here at DP have shelves and shelves of games that they never play - because they collect them. That said, most arcade game collectors I've known have a love for all of the games in their collections at some level, even it's more for the period of time they represent (of course, the same can be said for the cart and console collectors).

Yes I understand, but arcade units, especially cocktails take up so much (floor) space. For this reason, my collecting will be much more restricted than it is with regular VG's.

Well, the Wench pointed out it'd look really good in the new house. :) Considering the show we were at was a home decor show and wasn't a videogame show by any stretch, I'd say owning a cab for aesthetic reasons is applicable for some people.

I'll tell you this, I really don't care to play Computer Space or Night Driver, but if I ever found and could afford either of those I would because those cabs look amazing.

I understand the temptation -- it's the reason I have two Shinobi cabinets (second one was such a great deal!) But when getting up into that price range, it would have to be a game I really wanted and in good condition for that kind of cash.

And, good job on trusting your instincts on the repair factor. I don't personally know if it would have been an easy fix or not, but I do know the longer I mess with these things the more I know what my personal limitations are, which I keep in mind while shopping.

Interesting spottage though!
