View Full Version : I've Got a DS...Now What? AKA: help me pimp my DS
Captain Wrong's Wench

So, Captain Wrong got me a DS for my birthday, and he got me Nintendogs, Sprung, and Wario Touch.
So, now that I've got the DS, what should I get or do to it?
What kind of hacks are out there? What are the best accessories? How should I trick it out?
Also, can you recommend some girl-friendly, casual player games? I like Bemani games, Bust a Move, Super Puzzle Fighter, Namco Museum type classic games, and stuff like that. I'm open to things out of those genres, but I'm not going to play some weird Japanese RPG or fantasy crap. I'm sure the Captain can help me weed through the game suggestions, so let me have them!

Add Animal Crossing and you should be all set for a nice start.
If you like Bemani games then you should love Ouendan.
I'd also look into getting Bust A Move DS, Feel the Magic, Rub Rabbits and Trauma Center in the future.

I'm shocked that no one else's mentioned it...
Kirby's Canvas Curse is an excelent game and its stylus use is among the best for the system. Levels arn't long and its got a good amount of challenge to it.
Zoo Keeper. Crack in a DS cart if you like Puzzlers. Also in the puzzle vein, is Mr. Driller. Its more of whats been on the PlayStation, Dreamcast and GBA, but with the dual screens it opens up some interesting thought into how you should be drilling. Theres nothing US released thats quite like Super Puzzle Fighter...yet. Bust-A-Move DS is good, but it does take a little time to get used to aiming in it.
You mentioned Capcom Collections (there isn't anything Capcom yet).... whatever you do, DONT go after the Atari Retro collection. Its craptacular.
Everything else mentioned I'd agree to as must have's.
IGN (http://media.ds.ign.com/media/746/746980/vids_1.html) has Ouendan videos, so you can see how it plays. Even has the Japanese commercial on the second page of the videos, which effectively eliminates the need to read instructions (or find their translation). Only thing I can add to the suggestions is Lost in Blue (survival/adventure game).

Well if you wanted me to name all the good titles, then I will ;)
Yes, Kirby is another great game and Zoo Keeper and Mr Driller are both fun, but I would still pick the other titles first.
Castlevania DS is a great game. It's not exactly a girly game, but it's not that complicated of a game to follow.
Also, that Peach game is coming out and it looks mightly girly from what I've seen.

Sonic Rush
Castlevania DoS
Trauma Center
Phoenix Wright
Mario Kart DS
Meteos
Feel the Magic
Animal Crossing
Advance Wars DS
My Favs so far, and there's more, but the list would get obnoxious then.
And I think these all are quite girl-friendly. I hope. Maybe?

My girlfriend likes the Electronplankton.
Also if you are looking for a better stylus I recommend the one by Proporta
http://www.proportagame.com/buy/Nintendo_DS_Stylus
It fits in the DS compartment, but extends to fit your hand better. It also feels more substantial. Anyway my hand cramps up less since I got one... :)

Why is Trauma Center and Phoenix Wright so hard to find?
EDIT: Oops...I replied to the wrong thread. :P

I can't speak for Trauma Center, but with Phoenix Wright, they just plain didn't ship enough copies. It wasn't expected to be a popular game, but it ended up being one, so it sold out everywhere. It's very hard to find brand-new in the wild now. You might have to resort to eBay. Or, you could wait until the European release, and import a copy of Phoenix Wright. I think it's coming out there next month.
Both Trauma Center and Phoenix Wright are excellent games though. Both have very accessible learning curves, although Trauma Center does gradually get very difficult. I own both games, and they're probably my favorite 2 DS games.

I don't want to mention any games that others have suggested (which are all great, btw), so I should suggest Yoshi Touch and Go. If you want a great showoff game for the stylus and microphone, as well as a classic, short-burst arcade game, you can't do better than Yoshi. It's not a game that will appeal to everyone, but stick with it and you'll have a blast. A used copy should be pretty cheap by now.

Or just import a cheap Japanese copy, it has the English language version on it anyhow. Plus you get a different cover art :)

I'm addicted to Animal Crossing, Super Princess Peach and Metroid Prime Pinball right now.
