Sega CD 2 NO DISC Error

My Sega CD just up and stopped working. No major bumbs or scrapes, just a few months inbetween plays. It hasn't moved from it's shelf.

No matter what Disc I put in it, the system acts normal, like it's going to read the disc. The I get the "press start" message, and then it says NO DISC after I press start. This is for both games and CDs.

More than likely the lid closed sensor is damaged or not being pushed down. I've never delt with this on a SCD 2 so I can't say specifically what to look for but it's a common problem on the JVC X'Eye...

There will either be a tab on the underside of the SCD 2 tray lid at the front or one internally at the back that either directly or via a plunger presses down on a little switch that tells the SCD 2 the lid is closed and it's okay to engage disc spin / read. Sometimes the switch gets jammed, goes bad, the contact path gets blocked, etc. I'd say to open it up, locate the switch, see if it's functional and if so check to make sure the path that pushes down on it is clear and making proper contact.

Okay, the system knows that the door is shut, for sure.

Is there a fuse or something that might be dead?

I noticed that it looks like there is a lithium battary hardwired into the board. I assume this is for the memory, like the Saturn... what happened if it goes dead? Will the system stop working?

Your laser must have died.

Try adjusting the PoT (a small yellow/orange screw) about 1/8th of a turn and see if it starts to read the disc better. As stated it looks like the laser is going out.

You can usually visually identify a bad CD laser by:

Trip the lid switch so the device thinks the lid/tray is closed. Then, look directly over the laser - you should see the lens jump up and down as it attempts to detect a disc. You should also see it blinking red as it does so. Don't look directly into the laser, it's supposed to be dangerous or something. You can see it blink from a foot or two above.

No blink: bad laser.
No lens jumpy-up-and-downy: no controller activity to laser.
