Hey, Just won a bid for a Sega CD unit.

Question 1: Where can I pick up a power unit? Is it the same as the Genesis one?

Question 2: Is there a converter that allows the play of MCD games on a US Sega CD?

Question 3: (the fun one) What is the must have game for the Sega CD and why??

Thanks for the help 8-)

Best games for the Sega CD are in my opinion...
Sonic CD
Lunar series
Final Fight
Thunder Strike was pretty good to for its time

Top 20 Sega CD games as voted on by a buhmillion DP members (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1564&highlight=)

Seriously, the "What is the must-have/Top 20/gotta-buy games for blank-blank system" questions have been done to completion in the Classic Discussions forum. Click the link above and you'll see what folks have voted as being the must-haves. And, if anyone wishes to toss in their two cents, please do so in the "official" thread linked above.

Since this thread asks two other questions that are pertinent, I'll keep it open. But if this turns into yet another Top 20 Sega CD poll, I'll toss the shackles on.

Yes, a GREAT game. A bit expensive to buy but really good. Sonic CD is ok and the Lunar games are good. Skip Final Fight and get it in the Capcom Classics Collection for $20. That's a better version.

to answer your first question, the power supply is the same as a genesis 1 power supply (no yellow tip)

there is a region lockout but no copy protection on the sega cd, so if you managed to find an import (for example, sonic CD has a better soundtrack if you get the jpn version), then a quick google search should net you an easy method of ripping and reburning a game with the correct region settings, allowing you to store the original.

Whilst we're on/near the topic, is there a regional lockout on PAL Mega CDs?

cheers.

There is region protection on the Sega CD.

Grab that to convert between regions, it's currently the best utility out there. A lot of games simply can't handle the change from 50/60Hz though, so you won't always get a fully working game.

Yeah, I really want people to get the Japanese version of Sonic CD, because the US soundtrack sucks!

Converting regions? Nah, MultiBIOS all the way ;)

The region conversion isn't perfect, the import carts such as CDX aren't great either. Eeproms are your friend.....

I was just going to ask about that, then I had to go to dinner.

How do I use it? I have no idea. I want to make a "backup" disc but I can't get a European version of any Mega CD games.

I'm not sure if we're allowed to talk about "backups", though.

After many plays i disagree on final fight being better
on the capcom classics, the sega cd/mega cd versions
kick its ass in sound quality.

That ripping program doesn't work for every game. You could hack a JP bios into the system, but your best bet is the Datel unit (hard to find)....I forget the name of it. Basically, it goes in the cartridge port and acts as a secondary bybass bios. If you can find one, this is the least invasive way and works quite well. The alternative to this and a difficult mod is getting JP and EURO systems in addition to your US unit.

You can try to find a converter, i use the Datal Pro CDX and those work great. Note that there are two versions, the grey one only works on the MegaCD/SegaCD 1!! The red one works on both 1 and 2.

But good luck on finding them cheap, on eBay they go for a lot of money (i sold one for € 45,-/$50+), more than what i paid for to get me an SegaCD and a modded Megadrive to play the US games (i am a PAL-gamer). There are others like the CD+, but expensive as well
