View Full Version : The Death Of "Macintosh Garden"

I've been using the InterNet pretty regularly for 3 years, now.
One day, while stumbling around, I happened upon "Intertainment Nirvana" ....
The website that harbors a neglected chapter of gaming -- boxmac software.
Games that I thought were vaporized into existance were ALL there in a beautiful look & easy-to-use downloads.
Even versions of classics that I had no idea about-- like "Captain Blood", for example.

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c144/forumepix/CaptainBloodMacintosh2.jpg
"Captain Blood" -- Classic "APPLE Macintosh"
[Yes -- This Does Exist! lol]

The website's called "Macintosh Garden" -- click here ta see it > "Macintosh Garden" (http://mac.the-underdogs.org)
It's philosophy's the same as "Home Of The Underdogs" only not DOS-exclusive.
By the way, I'm sure there's a similar place for the other Golden Age machines -- the AMIGA & Atari ST.
And I know here's one for the APPLE "APPLE][GS" computer.
It's called "APPLE ][GS Fairway" -- click here if you're curious > "APPLE ][GS Fairway" (http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/)

Recently, "Macintosh Garden" 's maintenance has not been upkept -- it's a shell of it's former self.
And lately software's been spamming the place like crazy & no one seems all that keen on saving it.
Screenshots were gone/back/gone ....
Downloading's now an impossibility ....

If you're a fan of Golden Age gaming on boxmacs like I am, please visit this most wonderful website before it's literally gone.
And there's an "Emergency BackUp", if you will.
It's called "Macintosh Attic" -- click here ta go to it > "Macintosh Attic" (http://www.grenier-du-mac.net/listes/liste_alpha.html)

I too noticed that Macintosh Garden has been having a few problems recently.

I love that place. Here's hoping someone will put forth the time and effort necessary for it to remain operational.

I would love to get my hands on an old B&W mac. Everytime I see one, it's too pricey and it needs a serious internal cleaning and fresh OS.

Really? The last one I got was a buck at a thrift store. It's fired up in the corner of my cube, sitting at the "insert disk" icon.

I see box Macs at thrift stores all the time for $5. Okay, maybe they are $10. I almost grabbed a Mac plus the other day, but they apparently didn't have the keyboard and mouse for it - and those still used those phone cord connectors.

Man are you lucky ....
We have nothing like that here -- New York City
Wanna "Big Wheel" with worn-out tires -- no problemo.
But a classic APPLE "Macintosh" computer? Nope

That's exactly the kinda keyboard I've been huntin' down

Heh, I got my BoxMac when we moved into our house. It was in the crawlspace... not sure if it was the previous owners or perhaps even further back than that that left the machine there.

Also found 2 Mac LCs in the garbage within the past 3 years.

Macs fall from the trees up in Toronto, methinks.

As if in response to the conversation in this topic, yesterday at my local thrift store, I came across a minty-fresh Macintosh SE. I plugged it in to test it and the hard drive booted it up to some version of System 6 just fine (I didn't bother plugging in keyboard and mouse to test further).

I was sorely tempted to purchase it, but it was $10 (while $5 is about what I would want to spend) and I have no real way of getting software onto it. Even though I believe System 6 had a TCP/IP control panel, there's certainly no Ethernet support on it. And my main computer is a 15" Powerbook G4 which, of course, has no floppy drive. I guess I have an old Pentium laptop lying around that I could use to download Mac software onto and get some program that would allow it to read and format floppies for the Mac and transfer that way. Still, seems like too much trouble. Maybe if it is still there tomorrow...

I was actually thinking and came across the same problem as you.

What I plan on doing is just downloading all those games, putting them on a USB drive, and using a friends windows machine. Assuming it has a 3.5 floppy drive, Ill just buy some disks from office depot or somewhere (they've got to be like $1 for 900 nowadays)

USB>Desktop>3.5>Done.

If Im correct, instant classic mac library!

It's APPLE's best boxmac -- the "Macintosh SE/30" -- in it's most beautiful design.

That's not totally accurate... there are some rather notable differences between the Mac SE/30 and Mac Classic II other than case style.

One big difference is expandiblaty: Mac SE/30 has a PDS slot for expantion cards(like maybe ethernet cards).... Mac Classic II does not.... also, the Mac SE/30's RAM can be expanded to 32MB, whearas the Mac Classic II can only handle up to 10MB of RAM.

There are more differences that become apparent when looking at Apple's spec pages for the two computers.
Mac Classic II on Apple Spec (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=112179)

Mac SE/30 on Apple Spec (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=112170)

Personally, I happen to think the mac SE and SE/30 case design looks just fine (http://www.thecowsaysmoo.org/superpsycho/Pictures/macse.JPG).

....download Mac software onto and get some program that would allow it to read and format floppies for the Mac ...

Here's how ya download APPLE "Macintosh" computer software with a PC to be used on an APPLE "Macintosh" computer ....
1] Put a blank floppy in your APPLE "Macintosh" computer
2] Click > SPECIAL > ERASE DISK > DOS 1.44 MB
3] Download any software on the floppy with a PC & it'll work in any APPLE "Macintosh" computer !

And may the house recommend the following classic APPLE "Macintosh" software sources?
1] "InfoMac"
If it isn't here, it doesn't exist lol
Click here > "InfoMac" (http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive.html)

2] "Mac Attic"
Your #1 classic APPLE "Macintosh" computer game resource.
Scroll to the bottom & click TELECHARGER -- that means "DownLoad".

Actually, I needed the opposite - a way to read Mac-format floppies on a Win 95 PC. 800k floppies at that, since this SE I looked at didn't sya Superdrive, so I figure no High Density ones. That's the only computer I currently have that has both an internet connection and a floppy drive. So I would download to the PC, transfer to floppy, and then floppy to the SE.

Also, I'm pretty sure it was only with System 7 that the ability to read PC-format disks came standard (though there was an add-on for System 6) and I doubt this System 6 SE would have had that capability.

What I would really love is to find an Ethernet card for the SE (and a really old version of Netscape Navigator, I guess).

kk -- I'll have the answer for ya in just a bit ...

... a way to read Mac 800K floppies on a Win 95 PC.
I would download to the PC, transfer to floppy, and then floppy to the SE.
It's impossible 800K disks in a PC floppy drive.
The hardware is fundamentally different,
and there is no way software can overcome the differences ....

That's the answer I was given, Red -- sorry.
But the alternative's easy -- just get an external 1.44MB floppy drive for your APPLE "Macintosh SE" computer.

What I would really love is to find an Ethernet card for the SE (and a really old version of Netscape Navigator, I guess).
There's something much better than NetScape "Navigator".
It's called "iCab".
Click here ta get it > "iCab" InterNet Browser For APPLE "Macintosh SE" Computers (http://download.filefront.com/4843530;021c921bfd5efffb60f06bd020195ec343fa5e2f59 265525784e0f160704f55093fc12f0f425776d)
