Someone took it upon themselves to make a totally new NES "Super Mario" homebrew from scratch that's playable in an NES emulator.
I have it on pause right now while I'm typing this lol

Not ENTIRELY from scratch, heavily modified palettes and sprites from mario 3, alot of it was made by hand though.

So is this game good enough to take to NES Reproductions to have them dump it on a cartridge? How about telling us a little more about the game itself?

Later,
Chrome...

Damn that is one of the heaviest hacks i've seen :)
Would be cool to have a reproduction of it.

I think I've read about someone wanting to make a repro of this game before, but that the game actually uses tricks only available in the emulator, which would make it impossible to play on a legit NES.

...of course, I wouldn't mind if someone could prove me wrong. :)

Yes, I wrote up my little review of it in this thread (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=27378). F*cking Boom-Booms.

I say, go play Demo World: The Legend Continues, a truly masterful hack of Super Mario World, instead. I have yet to check out DDCecil's (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=51733) undoubtedly impressive work.

I hope it's better quality than that SNES hack that plays like a Rescue Rangers clone. That game was pretty awful.

Judging by the screenshots, this game looks better. I'll probably give it a shot.

That was a hack of a Genesis game to make it look like Super Mario All-Stars, not a SNES hack.

Oh that's right, it was for Genesis. My bad.

Regardless, it wasn't very good.

I found this hack way too difficult, but than again I run full speed the whole way, its the only way to play 2D Mario :D

it's hard as hell but it's fun too. Just found it last week. Good thing I have a decent controller for my PC otherwise it'd be even worse. I like the fact the fireballs go straight =)

That screen shot looks cool. I might check it out sometime but it does not intrest me that much because I think is most likely just some levels of Super Mario Bros 3 changed around and some new things added. I might be wrong so I will check it out some time.

I don't need to download and play it to know how impossible it is to play.

Check out this video! :eek 2:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3443547304985676881&q=super+mario

The day I watched it I was impressed. Both by the moves the guy was doing and by the sheer genius the creator put into the game. There's stuff done in this game that never got done in a Mario game before. It's like when Team TNT created Final DOOM and figured out how to exploit bugs that allowed for transparent bulletproof walls and invisible bridges. Stuff id never did before.

What really gets me is the last world which tests you. From jumping precision over spikes to keeping your balance until time runs out to just plain surviving. Or the levels thatrequire you to collect all the keys or the coins. Amazing! This ain't just a level and graphic change, it's a total conversion. I haven't seen a total conversion this good since DOOM Aliens TC (http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=DOOM+Aliens+TC&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8).

I wish I had level design in my blood.

That video is impressive for sure, but it's kind of pointless since nobody has really played the game. It's hard to be impressed by a "speed run" when no one knows what it's like at a normal pace.

I should have mentioned I already had a copy of this ROM and it really IS hard. I mean REALLY hard.

Indeed, the video may be the best way to experience this game. I wasn't planning to watch the whole thing, but it's just so stunning what the hacker managed to accomplish... and just how sadisitic he is to make something so stupid hard! I'm almost surprised he didn't try to do something with simultaneous Bowsers!

(The wall-sliding thing was kind of cheap, but whatever.)

I've spoken with DahrkDaiz a few times (The Creator of this hack) and he lives only about 2 hours from here, in Knoxville, TN. Anyway, he has other projects that are better for people that aren't interested in "kick your ass' type gameplay. Mario Seasons, for instance, was made after Mario Adventure and incorporated the "changing" levels. For those that don't know, in Mario Adventure (and Mario Seasons) each time you play a level, it wont be exactly the same. Sometimes it will be at night, during the day, in an ice storm, or raining. Each "season" presents a different experience for the level (such as slipping aroun on the ice).

I strongly suggest finding a copy of Mario Seasons if you think Mario Adventure is too difficult. Another title everyone might be interested in is "Super Luigi : The Red Coin Quest". It's another SMB3 hack that's been revamped and modified to the point where it has become it's own game.

And as an update, the creator is working on Mario adventure 2.

This looks amazing for a hack. Thanks for the link and google video.

One thing I would have changed though was the name. Why not call it "The Search For The Lost Keys" Or something?

Also, that Seasons sounds cool. I'll look into it.

Anyone have confirmation for that?
