Thanks for your purchase. Please confirm this is your correct address (insert paypal address) & then I will ship your item.
A reasonable request. All the buyer had to say was "yes". But no. The buyer responds, "On second thought, send my item here instead. (gives a totally different address)"
(rolls eyes)
Not the question I asked. Wanted "yes". Or "no"

So you just wanted him to reply "no"? Instead of saying where to send it?

A buyer should know we Paypal sellers can't ship to non-confirmed addresses.
A buyer should know not to request shipment to some totally different place.

I ship to hundreds of unconfirmed addresses per week, how on earth would a buyer "know" that you wouldn't do that?

If you didn't want to give him the option then why did you ask?

Exactly my thought. Your only protected by PayPal's seller protection if you send the item to his confirmed address and that's provided by PayPal when the buyer pays. IMO there really shouldn't be any question as to where to ship to.

Please re-read post #1 "Confirm this is your correct address". I didn't ask for alternate addresses.
IMO there really shouldn't be any question as to where to ship to. It never hurts to get double confirmation. Maybe the buyer moved & didn't update their paypal? Ya never know.

Yes, and once again you've confirmed your lack of intelligence for me.

One should not ask questions if he cannot handle what the answer may be...

I mean no disrespect here, but it seems like you always have some problem with your buyers (or at least you're always posting about it) -- do any of your tranactions go well?
As far as the addy goes, I almost never have things shipped to where I actually live (since I am on the road ~99% of the time) -- and i've never had a problem getting something shipped somewhere else when i've asked. That's from eBay and from normal online stores. I'm sure many people have many reasons to have things sent to somewhere other than where they live... (in university, the military, away for work...) Ya gotta be flexible!

Nothing wrong with that. Maybe the guy was going to be at his grandma's for the next 2 weeks or something -- you never know. Think about it this way: when you send it to where the buyer wants you MOST to: there's the least amount of chance the buyer will dissatisfied. Maybe thats just me.
And it's not like he said "Nevermind I don't want to pay for this item any more."
That's what I was assuming when I first read your title.
Your situation described... doesn't seem to fit the topic title all that fittingly, quite frankly.

More pertinent question: Why are (some) sellers so whiny?

You know, I'm actually surprised at how many sellers here ship to addresses other than the one confirmed by PayPal. You forfeit and PayPal seller protection you have by doing this. Personally I prefer to only ship to confirmed addresses because I had a chargeback placed against me once from someone who claimed that he never received their item and I've been hesitant to ship to unconfirmed addresses ever since.

I've only shipped to one Unconfirmed address, just because I really didn't know what it was all about. Now that I know what a confirmed and unconfirmed address is, I don't ship to unconfirmed.
I also never ask the buyer if the address is correct. If it's not, then thats their own fault. The more questions you ask, then the transaction becomes more difficult.
Kevin, I think you should ship to that other address he gives you, just because you asked him that stupid question.

No. She could claim "I never got it" and the Delivery Confirmation would not match the address listed in Paypal & I'd lose.

I use paypal shipping so my tracking number and receipt are already on record with paypal automatically. A buyer tried to say he never got my item and paypal checked the DC and showed in delivered and I won the dispute. It really makes a difference when using paypal shipping. Of course these are my experiences apparently everyone else is totally different. The only difference is I use paypal shipping.
The seller protection policy only increases your coverage to $5000 but you still have to go through the same process during a dispute.
