View Full Version : Am I the only person who enjoys SNES GunForce?

It seems to get ripped everywhere I look, but I find it a fun little diversion of a game. It's on the easy side, so you're guaranteed to beat the 5 stages and it takes about 20 minutes, the sound is the game's best suit it's really fitting and oomphful I guess you could say, and so if you want a mindless little Contra romp for 20 minutes this isn't too shabby IMO. On the flip side the graphics are the worst aspect of the game... it looks like a high-end NES game lol. But the gameplay is decent.

I seen a lot of 3's and 4's to this game. (note. the review on DP gave it a 5) Personally, I'd give it a 6. The game grew on me the more I played it.

Not at all. It's an annoying game, and I remember renting it way back in the day. But it was fun for a while. I'd give it a 7.

There's no excuse for the slowdown when you have all of one enemy on screen. That, and the arcade sequel was incredible.

I never much cared for Gun Force. The control was spotty, which really killed it for me. Craptastic graphics and overly easy difficulty were just icing on the hate cake. Honestly, if it weren't for the sequel's art style being similar to In The Hunt and Metal Slug, I probably would never haven given it a chance just because of how lackluster the first game was.

Talk about a total 180 in the quality department. Those guys got good, fast.

Hey, it's the spiritual ancestor to Metal Slug. I like how the hero looks like an armadillo/triceratops hybrid.

As for the slowdown...I just tried it out on ZSnes, it wasn't too noticable, but screen details were a bit too sparse in addition to that. In any case, the hit detection is very...what? You can duck and have bullets go right over your shoulder, I guess.

I did manage to credit my way through the first Gun Force in MAME a few years back. Just a very bland experience. I started playing Gun Force 2, but the controls were still a bit off. Much more playable and actually nice to look at (the jet shedding bits of itself when shot is a forerunner of Metal Slug).

I think it's cool, but I didn't know that there was a sequel.

The sequel is the best arcade game ever made that no one's ever played. People talk about the close association between some Irem developers and SNK and it's most prevalent between Gunforce 2 and the first two Metal Slugs.

I think I like Gunforce 2 more than Contra III: The Alien Wars. It's almost the same game but with more of everything. The climbing around/platforming is a little more developed, there's a ton of stuff you can ride on instead of just the tank in area one of Contra III, etc.

You can see the Metal Slug influence not just in the artstyle and bonuses, but also in some of the vehicles which popped up in MS4. Fantastic gem of a game.

Irem is one of those developers left that NEEDS to do an arcade compilation for the current consoles like Midway, Capcom, etc.

The SNES port of the original is reasonably accurate outside of the slowdown making it near unplayable at times. Don't even bother with coop. :(

Yikes, I didn't realize how good GunForce II is, or how much like the MS series is really is (robots in the factory that crumble into dust as well as large metallic vehicle designs, and the music which sounds right out of an MS game). I was originally kinda annoyed by your main character's (MAX or BUG?) slow second arm, but that does let you shoot in all sorts of angles. Its slightly different angle does mean that you usually can't have double the firepower though.

You can tap the contoller in a direction while stationary to keep firing in that direction though which is pretty cool.

Also a lot of people don't realize it, but there are some bosses you can literally climb all over, like the first boss.

Gives a great action movie feel when you're literally hanging onto the boss itself and firing your machinegun directly into it's weakspot at point blank range.

You'll realize the use of the double angled gun when you're trying to one credit the game. After the first level the majority of the platforms create two "levels" like in E-SWAT and Shinobi. It's very useful for dealing with stuff on both levels at once when the action is too heated for you to hang off the the second level or switch levels.

Nice avatar, I love System Shock 2.

I'm climbing the same tree as some of the pre-posters to this one.

I got this game last November and beat it in under 15 minutes my first time around. I was shocked at how short it was but it got it's several minutes of fame. I'd play it again but it's a big lag fest and is pretty much blah. On the otherhand, it's fun so a 6/10 seems reasonable. As for a sequal, didn't know about that. There's a lot I don't know about so I'm not too suprised but I'll cetainly keep an eye out for it.

its odd... it's really fun in an offbeat sort of way. Killing enemies and 'bots feels natural and "satisfying" if only they improved the graphics and music it would score a lot higher with me. And the bosses, though simple and not all that "OMG LOOK HOW COOL/UGLY IT LOOKS" -- are still a great barrel of monkeys to dismantle, as they all require you to take out 3-4 turrets... just like a SHMUP.

Plus the fact that it came out early in the SNES lifespan I'll cut it some slack. They really needed to fix the HORRID climbing animation though -- yesh. But yeah, fun game to run around, gun robots down and whatnot. Too bad the portover graphics of the flamethrower got butchered big time though

Well something I did like about it was the vehicles you get, although the copter seemed to have some crude controls and it's functionality. I don't care about graphics that much, just to an extent that it's not 4-bit on a 16-bit system and with characters you can somewhat make out what the hell they are. I didn't have many problems with the climbing but it could use some fixing if they tweaked it around a bit during production. I should pop this title into my SNES sometime in the near future to check it out again and dream of if I had the sequal.

Don't bring up ROMs for the sequal please.

There IS a Geo Storm PCB on eBay right now.

Anyway, played through Gunforce (MAME) again, not too shabby!

You know anyone that can one credit it? The last boss decimates me every time.
