Well the guy on the right finished a fraction of a second before, so he won. You can tell by the way the words the princess says appear on the screen first.

Fucking awesome! Where was this?

Oh man, that's the craziest thing I've ever seen!! Everyone must watch this! No emulators, no savestates, no BS - just raw skill. Hands down the most impressive display of video game skill I've seen in my life, especially live and before a crowd.

Anyone got more information on these guys or the event?

That was actually suprisingly slower than I thought it was going to be.

Um, what? I think you've been playing emulators too long-Mario only goes that fast.

Yes, very nice video. I can't say I have anywhere near that much skill on Mario.

boatofcar: I think Jumpman was trying to say that he thought they would beat the game faster than that.

That was pretty sweet. I think i can do that good up to level 8-1 and after that i'll suck........lol. But the thing that was the sweetest was when people were cheering. Thats awesome!

Jumpman Jr. may be referring to the fact that there is a speed run of Super Mario Bros. played on a real NES that is about 5 minutes, in contrast with the 6 minutes it took these guys. You can see it at http://speeddemosarchive.com/

:-P Cool. You could tell that finishing at the same time was planned because both guys kinda stopped and let the other guy catch up (the guy on the right did it in 8-1, and the guy on the left did it after that). But then again, that's almost more impressive that they work together like that to put on a good show.

The crowd was good too. I can't believe they dressed up like mario and luigi tho. LOL

And you can read about time specifics at the page the video is on.

"Harmer's all-time SMB record: 5:09
Ninneman's all-time SMB record: 5:11

You can tell they fool around a little bit in this one for the talent show, so it's just around 6 minutes."

I love this video, in fact I have even been able to take a few tips from it. Wish I could complete it that fast.

If there's one thing I don't like about this video it's the encoding. I'm guessing it's a Hi8 or VHS transfer but still, even downloaded (okay, I hate DivX for standard resolution stuff, it just plays buggy) it's not all that great - can see what's going on but still.

I dunno, I'm just so damn impressed with this I want a DVD release with player commentary. LOL

Actually, about a year ago, I was determined to beat the all-time Super Mario Bros. time of whatever it was (I think it was 5:10 at the time, might be 5:09 now), of course, without an emulator.

I practiced and practiced for months, then started filming my trials.

The best one that I have on film is about 5:23, with very few mistakes (but one big one that I think cost me the record), and I have yet to do it again.
6:00 is cheesecake.

It actually aggravates me to watch those guys play, because they do incredibly stupid things. First off, on a speed run like that, stopping to get mushrooms/flowers kills your time.
Another thing, they took the slowest route possible on the second level. See where they went above the level? That's a big no-no for me. It wastes WAY too much time to stop and break the bricks at the top, then jump up there. Level 1-2 is one of the few levels that is fairly easy to run through without letting go of B and Forward.

I'll have to start working on my times then, it's something I've been meaning to try out.

Though I have to disagree with you on one thing: it seemed like a good idea to pick up the 'shroom and flower on 8-3, it allowed them to run through the Hammer Brother fleet without having to wait for any jumping opportunities (keep in mind this is coming from someone who hasn't tried running through SMB at ALL for a while now). It seems like it would be a legitimate way of going about that section, so wouldn't it save time as opposed to having to time the jumps inbetween hammers? Or is there a split-second where you can jump right over them without having to worry (much) about being hit?

this is really good for a first try and infront of a live audience.

§ Gideon §
03-11-2006, 01:58 PM
Yeah, CYRiX is right. In the comfort of your RoD, sitting on a couch, with infinite tries and virtually no pressure is one thing; a live audience expecting a performance is another. Those guys had to perform, and they did a good job. It's not a speed run. It's just entertainment, and the video succeeds.

I don't think it was planned for the one guy to crash into the lava bubble right before Bowser.

@_@ @_@

Did anyone notice how AFTER getting hit by that unexpected lava bubble and being shrunk and surely thrown off that he almost runs right through bowser and somehow manages to squeek by. WIWOOOWEEE

Nahh its beyond what your talking about, there's dynamics that your not either not addressing or aren't aware of.

Considering I've competed solo in events in front of crowds as large and bigger than that. And with that sheer amount of focus on you all at once, with you being the one driving all of that focus, it will turn your legs instantly into buttered ramen due to even the slightest waver. And I wasn't dressed as luigi for that matter either.

Sure, running along the top of 1-2 was a "slow-no" but 90% of the people in the auditorium might never have saw that shortcut before, it got them CHEERING THE LOUDEST YET. I say shortcut because to that particular audience it was like the most impressive thing ever to see that the level could be "cheated" like that and all obstacles avoided. It was actually a smart plan, I'm sure the majority of the viewers of that preformance will have thought it more amazing and probably not have noticed or cheered as much if "Mario & Luigi" had saved a few seconds by not running along the tops. You can be annoyed by that though there was good merit.

You've talked about filming skateboarding before but this is only a metaphor. Its like when Tony Hawk skates and does kickflip 540 varials. Yes it is more awesome and it is more advanced and technical. But to your average looky-loo watching the next skateboarder who is doing bigger airs higher than Tony Hawk was, will make them say WOW look how high he jumped his board!

What those guys did is about like an Am skateboard rider on a street course doing all in one 45 second run the first try; a hardflip nosegrind, proceeding to fs 180 flip over the car jump, nollie 360 the transfer and then top it of with a kickflip bs lipslide down the ten stair rail.

Oh yeah and that thing were he got hit by the bubble and then rushed Bowser might then be analogous to encoring after your 45 second alotted time was up (not recomended) by heading back to the car jump and then shooting your board through both open windows on the car and then catching it down the ramp on the other side. See how hes then done a dynomite preformance by TAKING LONGER THAN THE TIME EXPECTED TO FINISH HIS RUN. See how that works? Not to mention both players had the distributed awareness to tell when each other were even only a little further apart in stages.

The Conclusion is Class

Excellent work, now I wanna see them do that on super mario 3 ;).... Of course they'll just use the three fluits and warp to the end but still.

:frustrated: They were showing off before a live crowd and screwing around, the very end of the video should show that. (there were even parts when the player on the right stopped for a moment to allow the left player to close up on him) They were also dressed up as Mario and Luigi.. Oh yeah, I'm sure that was just the hardest fought competition of their lives.

I think what got the crowd going the most was clearing the pipes in 4-1 while the pirahana plants were still sticking up. Yeah it's not a huge deal but most stop at those pipes and wait for the plants to go back down. Also the water part of 8-4 since by then they were pretty much even and back in full tilt mode.

I get it.
I just think I can do better :P.
But thats just my opinion.

And for the record... I have actually done it infront of an audience (which could have actually beaten my best time, but it wasn't filmed). It was at a swap meet in Ottawa. Good times.
Again, your all making valid points, and I should probably just shut up ;)

Heh, very cool. Kinda reminds me of the competitions my boyfriend and his brother have to beat Symphony of the Night the fastest, one playing the PlayStation version and the other playing the Saturn port. Of course, they're not dressed up as Alucard and Richter as they do it. :P
