View Full Version : Are snes box protectors really worth that much?

I was about to place a bid on these when I got outbid. But 10 plastic protectors for 82 dollars? come on now. If I knew how to make these, i'd be rich.

Well of course they aren't worth that. Not even close. They usually sell for around 15 for ten.

Do these pop up fairly regularly on Ebay then?

Not 'regularly' but often enough if you keep your eyes peeled.

Are these official Nintendo? If not, do you know where they come from?

I heard that someone that used to frequent these forums a couple years ago sold them for $1 each, but he's gone now. I doubt they are official.

Yes he did used too. I think he went by the name "buffg" on here and ebay.
He had, or has a web site at www.nintendo.nerd.com.
Haven't checked it out in a while, I assume it's up and running still, but there has been no updates in like 3 years.

I was lucky enough to by those when they were $1 a piece, as well as sleeve protectors to go along with it. First you put your game in a plastic sleeve, like you would a baseball card, then you put the game in the harder plastic protector that sells alot on ebay now.

They're not worth that much but they're damn near impossible to find. I bought a few hundred about two years ago, ran out and haven't been able to find any more sinse. If anyone knows a place to get them for a reasonable price please let me know.

Alright guys... I know where I can get them, but it would take a while to finish and I would want payment up front. If there is enough interest in this I will look into it. Respond to this thread with the # of protectors you would commit to and prepay. Assume they would cost $2.50 each. I think it would definitely be less but don't want to underquote and screw myself and I do know the price of plastics is up lately thanks to the price of oil.

Bronty-2
03-12-2006, 03:09 PM
depends on interest. I would have to get a big enough order. 15 isn't going to cut it on its own, but enough people are interested in nes I can get that too.. so tell your friends ;)

Let us know what the eventual price will be. I suppose the days of me buying them for $.50 each plus a discount for buying them in bulk are somewhat over.

I am going to go with the 2.50 price. Sorry guys but I don't want to get left holding the bag on a $500 (or whatever) loss if they don't sell out and I'm left with inventory.

hi, keen for around 15 n64/snes ones and 5 NES ones :)

I assume these are the soft plastic version on the not the Hard ones. 2.50 seems alot when they used to be 50 cents, but hopefully you will confirm price ? thanks

Bronty-2
03-22-2006, 10:52 AM
soft fold plastic, yes.

I know 2.50 is kind of expensive but then again it's a lot cheaper than the $5-8 a pop that ebay seller above has been getting. And don't forget gy's prices from five years ago were back when oil was 1/3 the price it is now. Plastics are made of oil.

Besides, there are minimum order quant for me to buy and if somebody gets stuck with those costs, it's going to be me... :/

Wow.. what a coincidence. I won a game awhile back on eBay that came with one of these included and it got me to thinking again. This subject comes up every so often in the forums but no one seems to know where to find them.

Calistoo on eBay used to sell them.. but I don't believe she has in ages.

The other day I remembered I had a friend who once owned a small local video store chain (VHS & 8-bit days). I gave him a call the other day and asked him about these and he told me he may have several boxes of 100 laying around in storage somewhere. The ones he used fit SNES, N64 and Genny boxes; but he said the supplier had NES ones too.

At any rate.. he said he'd check into what he had left next time he went up north in a couple of weeks and I also asked him to see if he could find records of where he got them from (It's a long-shot but..). He said he'd sell me whatever he had left for REAL cheap.. at least a heck of a lot cheaper than what's been talked about so far. Maybe as cheap as $20 for 100.

I'll keep everybody posted when he comes back.

scorch56

HOLY CR*P!! ..I shoulda' looked at that auction closer.. sooner! That WAS Calistoo! She used to sell them ALOT cheaper than that! $82 for 10?!!! I haven't seen her selling these in years I thought she was out of them.. that's nuts!

Well.. I have good news. I called my friend today and pestered him.. he called me back and I made him an offer he couldn't refuse. He called his ex-wife up north and begged her to go look in their old storage unit. She says she found 500 of them up in the front of the unit but there possibly might be more in back buried. I offered him $200 for the 500 and he was ECSTATIC.. so if he CAN find more.. I'm sure he will when he goes up north next time in a couple of weeks. He also told me he knows several people who have defunct VHS rental stores and he'll ask around for more.

He also said he'd check his old business checks when he locates them; and try and find who he got them from.. but he's been out of business himself for 6 years.. so who knows.

So.. I've supposedly got 500 coming by the end of next week. I plan on keeping about 100 for myself.. but the rest I'll let go. This guy and I aren't the best of friends anymore and I KNOW he could probably use the money.. but I don't want to start taking orders OR especially money for them until I have them in hand.. undoubtedly.

I'm not looking to make a killing on them and I have NO idea what S&H would be for them until I get them (I'm paying $50 to the guy and his ex for their S&H); but as it stands right now.. here's about the prices I'm thinking. I'll have 400 left; I'll sell TWO lots of 100 for $60 (that's $.60 apiece); FOUR lots of 25 for $20 (that's $.80 apiece) and TWENTY lots of 5 for $5 (a buck apiece). That'll pay for my 100 and give me $50 for the trouble of "divying" this crap out.

I will take "dibs" on orders.. first come first served. Those that don't sell will go to evilBay where I intend to sell them to suckers for $10 each.. :P .. sheesh.. gimme' a break .

I'll take PayPal only payment AFTER I have them in hand.. I'll keep you all posted.. especially if I find/know more. Nothing yet on NES sized ones.

Couldnt some kind of company make more of these, or do they have to be made in the hundreds of thousands to be viable for a company to produce?

Is this just clear PVC plastic?

Does it protect against dropping a game and getting squashed?

Bronty-2
03-24-2006, 02:52 PM
You need to put in a large order, yes. Not hundreds of thousands but thousands.

How much for the NES ones Bronty? I want a few of them.

scorch56
03-24-2006, 06:47 PM
Ok..

dj_spryte and Adol have dibs on the two lots of 100 already. Only ones left are the smaller ones.

Griking.. I sent you a message. At this point I'm 90% sure I can get more.. possibly as many as 2000; however at this point I really want to sell the smaller lots as opposed to selling FOUR lots of 100. If this pans out; and is worth my while.. I may invest in the rest.

The guy's still looking for NES protectors amongst his aquaintances.. He says he hasn't found any yet. Odd.. the guy doesn't even know that I've collected video games the past several years.. but I sense he knows how badly I want them. He says if he finds NES ones they'll probably be higher.. somewhere around what I myself am asking now for them: $60 for 100; but don't start "dibbing" on these because I have no idea if any will be found.

Question.. see how Calistoo is using a "display box" in the eB ad? Weren't those display boxes slightly bigger than a regular SNES box.. or am I mistaken (Thought that's why nobody ever buys them.. they're lame.)? The guy sent me an old beat up one today that he found in his kid's room and told me the ones I'm getting are exactly the same.

I put a SNES box in it and it fit so snug you couldn't barely tell it was on it. I also tried a Genny box and it fit very nice (though some cases varied in width, cardboard gennys were a nice fit). I didn't try a N64 box but since they're the same as a SNES..

The ones I'm getting appear to fit a bit more snug than Bronty's as well. I'll try and get some pictures up soon.. my camera sucks.

Bronty-2
03-25-2006, 11:12 AM
Yeah, the snes ones I've had in the past are snug also, but I actually prefer a little room... the edge seams on the sealed snes games tend to catch on the edge of the box on the snug ones, plus the box ends stay closed better this way. But I see the appeal of the other type too.

ckendal
03-25-2006, 09:40 PM
do any of these fit Super Famicom games? I have complete MINT copies of Dragon Quest V and VI! Anyone know?

scorch56
03-26-2006, 02:39 AM
Here are some pictures of the sample I got yesterday. My friend assures me that the new ones are the same as this one. Keep in mind that this one's been in his kid's room for about 10 years.

First.. on a Genesis box:

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a315/emdeesee/Picture002.jpg

You really can't see it.. but it's there. A standard sized cardboard box (as shown) fits fine and snug.. so a 32X box or a Genny sleeve-style should fit fine too. Plastic Genny carts fit fine too, but snugness varies according to depth. I haven't seen a case too deep to not fit in it.

Next up.. a SNES box:

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a315/emdeesee/Picture004.jpg

Yeah.. I know.. and I SWEAR.. it's on that box. The only give away might be the intense flash flare; but I don't doubt a nice shiny box could do that too. Keep in mind N64 boxes are the same size as these.

Best I can do is show you the side view:

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a315/emdeesee/Picture006.jpg

Only reason you can barely see it on here is because of the piece of scotch tape I put on in the upper right hand corner. The box corners and flaps of this one were kinda' bent.

So here's a pic of the box itself. Like I said.. this ones pretty scratched. The ones I'm getting are brand new and flat. The end flaps both point in the same direction so that one large side of the box is completely unobstructed and clear when sealed (i.e. your front). The inevtable lateral seam is joined along one of the lengthwise sides.. in fact.. it's the side pictured in the FF II side view.. again.. it's that "invisible". One thing that impressed me is the clarity of the glue used to join that overlapped seam. It's clear as water (no yellow glue tint) and looks to have held fine over the years.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a315/emdeesee/Picture007.jpg

One last thing I noticed.. on the box I have the ends were sealed at one time with some round clear scotch spots to seal them. I don't know for sure.. but there may be two a box included with them. Keep in mind what these were used for back in the days. A video store owner would get the game and take the box and usually put a strofoam insert in it for rigidity. He'd then put the box in one of these sleeves and seal it up. then all he had were empty display boxes on his shelf.

These things would be BEST used on a factory sealed copy of a game. The ultimate protection for them.

I have 3 lots of 25 and the 20 smaller lots of 5 still up for reservation.

scorch56
03-26-2006, 08:02 AM
All of the 2 larger sized lots are reserved. Only thing left are essentially any amount up to 100 at $1 apiece.. or.. 5 for $5.. semantics. I'm hoping these show up by Wednesday.. but no promises.

scorch56
03-26-2006, 10:04 PM
I'm happy to say this 1st batch of 400 have been entirely spoken for; and here I was worried I would be left keeping some more (no BIG disappointment really).

I'll keep everybody posted if I get more.. I'll probably be selling them in lots of 100 only next time so I won't get stuck with them.

The seller has been wired the money for these and they'll go out tomorrow or Tues.. should reach me by next weekend.

I'll PM all of those who reserved as soon as they arrive and check out; with totals including shipping. In the meantime.. could Adol, dj_spryte, ckendal, chaoticjelly, kiun and pseudonym all PM me with your addresses you want them shipped to. I already know who ordered what and with that I might be able to get started as soon as I found out how heavy these things are.

Thanks to all for your interest.

Don't forget, for domestic shipping, you can always use the flat rate priority mail shipping, as long as it fits the supplied box. Its $8.80 by the way.

Yeah I saw that last night on USPS's website when I was doing research. In fact.. that's what I planned to use for you providing they fit. You're the ONLY one I've sold these to in the states; but don't feel bad.. the overseas buyers are paying way more than that (sorry guys.. it's the best I can do).

Right now.. I'm figuring a hundred of these to weigh 7lbs and take up about as much space as a standard US phone book.

To those providing box protectors:

How much would it be for 40 NES box protectors and about, eh, 70 SNES box protectors? I'm in the US, so I don't expect shipping to be too much. Also, if this post has been (sorta) previously responded to, I apologize in advance (too lazy to read 3 pages of posts looking for prices)...
