View Full Version : Prototype and converter

I was wondering if there is any risk to use a converter to play prototypes. I have a USA SNES prototype, but only a PAL machine. I once managed to fry a SNES with the converter, most likely because i put the game the wrong way on the converter hehe.

Anyway, is it safe? Can the EPROMS be deleted?

I don't know anything about Snes converters, but I do know a thing or two about eproms. Eproms are not as stable as regular roms. I've heard that they supposively have a 10-20 year lifecycle, but I also don't hear that often about bad protos. If you plan on keeping it, I would suggest dumping it so that you don't ever loose it to bitrot.

About dumping, lets say you dump a game and the original EPROMs stops to work. What do you do?

Use an EPROM burner (around $50) to burn them to new EPROM chips (those are a few dollars each)

I can't say for certain about a converter, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work, but as you mentioned be sure to put the board in the right way, usually the chips are facing towards the back.

Dumping shouldn't erase an EPROM unless your dumper is screwed up. Same with a converter. I think a good rule to go by is: If it doesn't kill a normal cart, it probably won't hurt an EPROM either.

I got the prototype today and tested it with the converter, worked fine ;)

Jajaja,

Just out of interest whats the USA SNES prototype your trying to play on a pal console?

and also i recently fried a USA snes with a pal/ntsc pirate cart, but it was just the fuse on the snes motherboard so it was no biggy, still a bit of a pisser, Grrrrrr!

and wats the proto like, big? heavy? epromy lol (any pics?).. and the fuse is on the back right of the board, de-solder it and get a fuse of the same amp-age, and replace it, in the pal consoles i think there is no soldering needed? but can't remember?

Nice pics fella, also are you in the UK or the USA?.. Would you be interested in selling it? and if so how much? or would you trade it?

Hey, I think I saw that on ebay not to long ago. Is that the "unknown prototype" that the guy said had HP on it (and he jokingly said he promised it wasn't Harry Potter?).

Since the eproms are socketed, you would only need an eprom burner to dump the eproms. If you're going to sell it, many will say it's value is less if it has been dumped. Cool find anyway!

For dumping i could just use my wildcard. I wouldnt feel safe doing it tho hehe. It is a released game and there is a ROM out there already. Altho, i have no idea if its the exact same as the retail, but it seems so. I need to get the retail and compare.

Predator: its not for sale (yet), sorry ;)

Looks undumpable for me. Because I own a Brawl Brothers (PAL) with this Board, and as I try to dump it someone say, that this Board is undumpable. O_O

Since the eproms are all on sockets, it would be simple to remove them and dump them with an eprom programmer.
