View Full Version : Sega CDX lovin'

Walked into my local Cash Converters today (retail-looking pawn shop) and lo and behold, what do I see but a mint condition Sega CDX system, the all-in-one Genesis and Sega-CD combo unit. It was just sitting on the shelf, waiting for me to grab it, for a mere $29.99! These easily go for $100+ on eBay, so I was naturally ecstatic to happen upon this little gem.
I'll probably look into getting an Xeye next. Does anyone else here own both the CDX and the Xeye? I imagine the Xeye is cool too, but just because the CDX is so small, yet packs so much retro power, it's my current favorite of all my Sega hardware!

Very nice deal. I've used the CDX and I own a JVC X'Eye and I prefer the X'Eye since it's far easier to service. Not to say that it's perfect, as the CD lid pinswitch is prone to failing due to age but it's easily repaired. Also the X'Eye has an import-friendly cartridge slot (don't remember if the CDX does) and can support the 32X. (officially it doesn't, but if you put it in an X'Eye it works fine) It's also pretty damn easy to put a US/JPN cartridge region switch in an X'Eye.
I've documented how to repair the pinswitch as well as how to install the region switch in an X'Eye at part of my site below, under Events / Features you'll find both...

That's still an amazing price on a CDX - they probably thought it was some kind of discman or something. LOL

Killer score dog!
bah, I'll just pretend you paid 30$ for a shitty bulky discman.
Haha, jokes on you pal.
Does the CDX have improved audio over the sega cd like the X eye?

Thanks for the info, will come in handy when I eventually get an Xeye. My Genesis model 1 is in the shop getting the mod for S-video...can the Xeye or CDX be modded for S-video as well?

I don't think so, at least it doesn't sound like it to me. Does your Xeye sound better Dave?

The X'Eye outputs true stereo (not the L/R downmix crap or patch cord stuff that the Genesis 1 / SCD 1 used) and plays CD-G+ karaoke discs (also has a mic input on the side). As for S-Video I'm not sure, but I have read about RGB mods - never performed any of them though.

I thought the cdx put out true stereo? It certainly uses the three-pronged A/V cable, and has a headphone jack on top of that.
At any rate, the SMS adaptor fits on a CDX, so I prefer that.

I think he's referring to the original Genesis/Sega-CD combo that uses the mixer cable. My Genesis is being A/V modded to add S-video and L/R directly out from the back of the unit, so it'll have true stereo sound too.

Yeah, that's what I meant, having to use a phono patch cable from the front of the Genesis 1 to the back of the SCD1 ("mixing") and then using the L/R out of the SCD1 while still using the RF or video output of the Genesis 1 for visual - what a freaking mess. But as you said, you can mod it to tap the audio directly, but I'm basing all this on factory specs.
At any rate, the SMS adaptor fits on a CDX, so I prefer that.
Very true, I wonder if it can be modified to fit the JVC X'Eye via disassembly (using just the bare internals or grinding the base of it flush) ..hmm... I'll have to grab the next one I see at the flea market. The cartridge side of the JVC X'Eye is based around the Genesis 2 architecture (okay, technically the Wondermega 2 architecture that was based around the Mega Drive 2 architecture) so it may just work. However, going with factory spec, a point for the CDX.
I thought the cdx put out true stereo? It certainly uses the three-pronged A/V cable, and has a headphone jack on top of that.
Point for the JVC X'Eye, while it has the normal Genesis 2 DIN connection, it has built in RCA jacks for L/R audio and Video without requring any modification.
Sadly, S-Video was something removed between the Wondermega 2 and the JVC X'Eye. It seems that JVC removed some of the parts that controlled S-Video output on the Wondermega 2 when they designed the X'Eye, (there's actually a gap for the socket in the case but it's not punched out on the shell) and the mod re-adds that functionality. Don't quote me on that though. LOL The mod information is rather undetailed and I wouldn't perform it based upon the information I've come across. The only information I've found concerning the mod is here (http://www.eidolons-inn.net/tiki-view_forum_thread.php?comments_parentId=1325&topics_threshold=0&topics_offset=12&topics_sort_mode=lastPost_desc&topics_find=&forumId=2).

I have a Genesis Model 2 / Sega CD Model 2 with composite AV cables comming from the Genesis to the TV and stereo system in my room. Composite is not the best, but like I say many times before, it's better than RF. I get true stereo with my speakers, it's a big boombox which can shake my whole house. 8-) :D

Well the local flea market (known as the sales yard) has been a source of some great finds over the years. There's this Chinese guy that has a warehouse full of crap and hauls a full truck of it out there every Tuesday. Most know him as the "dollar guy" since he yells "dollar dollar dollar" (although most stuff isn't a dollar until the end - when he usually ends up sitting atop the truck yelling it), some know him as Sai (short for his name I've been told), but I either call him the dollar guy or the Chinese junk dealer.
Anyway, I was digging through his boxes among the huge frenzy of people that are always over there, and looked over at a pile of junk and saw something that looked interesting atop it. (people dump the boxes) It was upside down and when I turned it over it was a JVC X'Eye, in really good condition, a couple scratches here and there. A quick look over and it seemed to be okay, didn't find anything else for it though. (usually the case, like when I found a Virtual Boy controller, battery box, the stand, and both instruction booklets - but no Virtual Boy. LOL) So I asked the guy that runs that spot how much he wanted and.......
....wait a minute, I've been recalling this story wrong. He said $3, I said $2 and got it for that. LOL Also it was the only thing I picked up that day strangely enough. Later on when I was able to test it the cartridge slot worked fine but I couldn't get it to read a CD. However the laser eye would move up and down just a hair upon powerup so it was getting power. I later figured out the lid close pinswitch was bad (seems many were), repaired it and wrote a tutorial. (well, originally I just overrode it before replacing the switch) Then recently I put a US/JPN switch in it for the cartridge slot and wrote a tutorial for that as well.
It was part of the second editorial I wrote on things I found at the sales yard, can find that here...

It should use standard RCA cables, I've heard (as in not confirmed) that there were some JVC X'Eyes that only had the DIN socket - if that's the case than any Genesis 2 RF / AV cable should work. Concerning power, I've been told (don't want to link to the thread it came up in since it's really old and was filled with misinformation including some from me) that a PSOne power supply will meet the needs of the X'Eye near perfectly but is hard to keep connected. A Genesis 2 power supply will also run it HOWEVER it's not the proper power setup for it and may cause damage. (never heard of one getting killed by it but the electronics are that it is a good possibility) Concerning a true JVC X'Eye power supply, they've been continued by JVC with no alternate part (could get them a few years ago)

Thanks. :) Always like to hear that, somehow hoping it will justify the huge expansions (unlimited space, unmetered bandwidth) I'm going to pay for starting this summer.

The JVC X'Eye has it's own BIOS, which is why it has problems with the MultiBIOS chip (that with a lot of work adds JPN and EUR modes to SCD1's and SCD2's). The JVC X'Eye BIOS is "Ver2.0 0" and I believe it's the only BIOS they were ever manufactured with. Also instead of the Sega CD spash screen or the Japanese Mega Drive CD or European Mega Drive CD splash screens, it has it's own. It has a giant X atop a CD with a lava lamp effect as it replicates around the screen. Also it plays the spash screen music from the Japanese Mega CD spash screen strangely enough.
http://www.startoursinfo.com/junk/XEyeSplashScreen01.jpg
And here's a comparison of the other splash screens...
http://www.startoursinfo.com/junk/XEyeSplashScreen02.jpg
Aside from the text the US and European ones are a little different in the rendering of the Earth and the Moon. Aside from that the "Sega" and "Sega CD / Mega CD" logos dance around with each other in pretty much the same ways. The Japanese Mega CD splash screen is the Japanese Mega CD logo against a cloud background, the logo spins around and flutters like a scrap of paper in the wind. The US and European background music is the same, and as I said the X'Eye background music is the same as is played on the Japanese Mega CD spash screen. There was never a European release of the X'Eye or either of the Wondermega consoles which it was a redesign of the Wondermega2.

Finally, thank you! I've been trying for the past couple weeks to nail down what the intro sequence on the Xeye was like and if it differed from the standard Sega/Mega-CD ones...this was exactly what I wanted to know.
Now for a harder question...do you know what the Japanese Mega-CD "Model 2" intro/music/bios is like? The pics you show are from the Model 1 versions of those machines (I have already confirmed that the intro screens are different in the model 2 version of the US and European machines), the only one I haven't been able to confirm is the Japanese Model 2 (it may be the same as the European Model 2, but I can't say for sure).

That totally slipped my mind, sorry, I was trying to get out the above information quickly (I also needed to do that comparison graphic of the Model 1 units for something I'm writing later). You are correct, the Model 2 US and European splash screens are different from the Model 1 versions. The US Model 2 spash screen uses the same backdrop but the SEGA and SegaCD logos move around differently. Additionally it uses different music (more keyboard snyth heavy) from the Model 1 spash screen. The European Model 2 splash screen uses a totally new background, however the SEGA and Mega-CD logos move around EXACTLY the same as they do with the Model 2 Sega CD. The music here, strangely enough, is the same that was used for the Japanese Mega-CD splash screen (also used with the JVC X'Eye). Also the European Model 2 Mega-CD and the US Model 2 SegaCD had the same CD player interface. Oddly enough the Japanese Model 1 Mega-CD and the European Model 1 Mega-CD have the same CD player interface, the SCD 1 is different from any other. Additionally the X'Eye has it's own custom CD player interface (the L/R level lights look more like LEDs).
JVC X'Eye CD player interface, note the CD-G sub selection, this is my favorite of all the CD interfaces for this series of console...

I thought I had a Japanese Mega-CD 2 BIOS file but looking over my data I don't, it also looks like it might not have been dumped. I'm assuming the CD-X is the same stuff as the SCD2 BIOS and the Multimega (Japanese CD-X) is the same as the MCD2 (JPN) BIOS - if I knew what that looks like. I think we need a table...

Thanks. You should get a Sega-CD system...they're readily available now, but who knows in another couple years! I used to have a sizeable Sega-CD collection when I was younger...but stupidly sold it all off to get a then brand-new Sega Saturn. Now, some 11 years later, I've decided I must correct the errors of my youth and am currently on a quest to collect every single Sega-CD related game (and piece of hardware) released in the US...before they're gone for good!
What about the CDX bios and the Laseractive with Genesis module bios? I would like to have information about these two. :)
The CDX bios is revision 2.21, the last official Sega bios released, and the unit functions just like a US Sega-CD Model 2.
As far as the LaserActive, I'd love to know about that one as well!

The ".21" is probably a small change to how the BIOS "2.0 0" firmware reads CD data since if I remember correctly the CD-X has a faster CD drive than the SCD's (still think the X'Eye is slightly faster) and also to control the battery powered CD playback via the front controls without using the game controller, TV display, etc.

That's true, my CDX does seem to be a bit faster loading games.
Regarding the Xeye intro/bios screen...does that "X" logo scale and rotate around like the other systems' logos? Also, which system's intro do you like the most? My favorite would have to be the original US Model 1 Sega-CD, since the logos seem to "chase" each other around and seem to be timed to the music (in my opinion the scaling/rotating effects are much more interesting here than on any of the other systems).

The X begins smaller on the screen (like in the first picture) and the CD beneath it blurs and swirls in different colors. After awhile the X spins back and flutters around, replicating itself after awhile, bouncing around the screen, leaving trails and so forth. I think it may be random. I've never watched it for all that long. Concerning effects, I like the Japanese Model 1 MegaCD splash screen the best because the MegaCD logo moves around like there's some real physics behind it, spinning and drifting around like a sheet of paper in the wind or an aircraft.

The only thing is I don't know where they are all at and I really don't have the time to look for them right now. I've been very busy with school work this whole semester. Sorry dude.

Great find by the way with the cheap CDX! I myself am a Sega CD fan and personally own the Genesis Model 1, Sega CD Model 1, Genesis Model 2, Genesis Sega CD Model 2, a CDX, and my personal fave, the Wondermega. I never did like the X'Eye/Wondermega 2 as it pales in comparison to the original. Still find it od too as t the Wondermega 2/X'Eye in Japan had both an S-Video output and wireless controllers and they decided to nix both options here, making the X'Eye even more of a letdown.
Since we are talking here about the intro screens and such, my personal fav is a tie between the Wondermega one and the original Genny/SCD Model 1. The Model 2 intro is ok, but just something about the original will always stick in my head :) Since none have been posted, I included three pics of the Wondermega intro screens. The two first ones are when you turn the unit on. The earth cycles through different colors as the "W" bounces around the screen and in and out of the earth. I think I understand a previous post here, as the Wondermega logo seems to also have some physics behind it, not just like some random paper blowing in the wind. The third pic is of the CD screen. This is the same exact screen as the original Model 1 Japanese Mega CD. Still looks nice though.

Thanks LiquidPolicenaut! Now is that a Wondermega1, Wondermega2, or a Sega Wondermega1? The boot sequence is very similar to the JVC X'Eye (was guessing the X'Eye was like the Wondermega since it's a reworked Wondermega2).

Oh yeah, i forgot to add more detail to my post. My pics are specifically from the JVC Wondermega 1. The Sega Wondermega actually has the same boot up screen as the JVC one, as well as the same cd player screen (You would notice that a JVC logo never appears anyway in the boot sequence). The only time it changed was when JVC re-released the Wondermega in Japan as a stripped down version named the Wondermega 2 (X'Eye in America), but the screen is pretty much the same as the original, and the cd player screen nearly identical to the X'Eye one.
Hope that helps out. If there's any further Sega/Mega CD discussions, I shall always be here :)
