View Full Version : Classic RPG Thread! **Illusion of Gaia** Who's Playing?
I know there's aleast 6 people playing the game at this time, because I've been PMed with questions.
I’ve always found that when I play a game that is new there seem to be a different feeling than when I play something that’s been out for a while. Usually, I like to play modern game more than old games. Don’t get me wrong. I love the classics, but the feeling you get about being able to talk about the game to someone else who is playing is just priceless. It is a very different than you being the only one playing it at that time and having no one to ask question, get tips from or just chat about the game. So with this being said I propose that we make an RPG thread where we play one or two old classic games at a time where people could come in and chat about them like the good old days. Anyone up for this? We could start with Terranigma and Brain Lord.
I went ahead and moved all this over to my blog. The Classic RPG Blog.
http://www.digitpress.com/forum/weblog.php?w=5
I went ahead and placed a link of where to get the rom so we can all start playing it and ejoying the game.

sounds interesting. You would have to pick games that are somewhat common, not uber rare so alot of people can join in the fun.

I just played through Brain Lord again last week, very underrated game. Must play for any old Ys fan. One of the few Japanese SNES games with INTENTIONALLY humorous translation also. I love how inept/greedy/unhelpful your "party" is. Nice soundtrack too even if each track is barely a minute long.

Paladin's quest!!
I haven't finished it yet :S
Well we don't have to do Terranigma. I know I'll do a poll.

Brain Lord would have been rated T if it was released today.
You go into the apartments in Toronto and you into one room and the guy says "It was so noisy last night I couldn't sleep at all! I think I'm going to complain!"
You walk into the room nextdoor and there's a couple next to each other that say "We are newlyweds. We are happy. Please leave us alone."
You walk into the room next to that and there's a guy facing the wall of the other room. Talking to him yields "What? I'm repairing this wall! Ramus and his goblins invaded us again and attacked the village and put this hole in the wall. It was horrible."
Poofta!

Hmmm, can't say I own many of those, in fact Phantasy Star II is the only one... Unless this turns into a thread similar to the MAME club and you allow distribution of ROMs, most of us won't be able to play along. By no means do I think it's a bad idea, just more commons need to be listed and voted on.

Phantasy Star 2, MightySlacker has me playing the series as sort of a challenge and PS2 is my least favorite of the series so it would really help if there were some others playing it as well. But if you don't get to it this week, I still have PS1 and PS3 to finish anyway so hopefully it willl turn out to be a featured game sometime in the not too distant future.
I've also done this sort of thread before on other forums. Works very well as long as you keep up with it.
Also When we do play the game, if anyone needs the rom (assuming it's allowed) just PM me your email address and I can send them out.
Incase you don't have it you can get if from here: Just copy the adress below into your adress bar and download. Don't click on it copy it.

I plan to start today. Actually I have already started checking out the game. You can check my web blog to see where I'm at at this time. I don't know how much time each RPG will take but I imagine it might be two weeks or a month per RPG since everyone has school and jobs.

IoG felt somewhat historical to me, often referencing ancient civilisations in this world. It's got a much more fleshed out story than Soul Blazer, naturally, and I do prefer it more. Somehow the fighting system was a little lacking. As for the ending, it sort of made sense, but felt very abrupt.
Terranigma, now that improved vastly on this game, but that's for another time.
Just a reminder to visit the blog to discuss Illusion of Gaia.

Illusion of Gaia was a lot of fun. For the next game I'd definitly go with terranigma, the great rpg few have played in the US, or Tales of Phantasia even.

YES! :D My all time favorite video game. It does spark a lot of feelings of childhood and adolescence and the progression into adulthood but without much of the RPG cliche. It has some VERY interesting parts and is always tossing new things into the mix concerning storyline events. It's also has parts based in real world locations such as the Great Wall of China and the Nazca Lines. Lots of dark secrets and outside events that cross with the player's journey. There's also some Japanese lore in there, comets being a bad omen and so forth.
About three weeks or so sounds good for this game, don't rush the story. ;) With the exception of a few bosses and the Mt. Kress area most mid level action RPG players should be through by then with normal playtime and some effort on the weekend. Of course this is longer than it will take most but as Cmtz said, taking into account real life, it leaves it open for everyone.
I wrote a review of Illusion of Gaia back in 2003, it can be found here (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/posting.php?mode=reply&t=82154). I think I was pretty good at not giving away anything outside of the first hour or so of the game. It's not up to the level of my more recent work but I suppose it's worth a read.
I'll play through it again with everyone else starting tonight. Anyone gets stuck, just ask away. LOL
Then go.

A few things to remember about Illusion of Gaia... (some of this changes, but it's the basic stuff and doesn't give anything away after the first hour)
- Only Young Will can use the flute.
- Learning songs for the flute and using them in the right places is important. (yeah, this was before Ocarina of Time)
- The only way to increase your levels is to be awarded with the powerup bonuses that are earned when an area is clear of enemies, many times this is also the only way to progress as clearing an area usually opens the pathway to the next.
- Freedan, the Dark Knight, has longer reach than Young Will and is more powerful, you really don't want to get caught in a boss battle as Will when you don't have to.
- Rarely is an entrance to Dark Space inside a level for no reason, they're usually there to provide a chance to change forms to accomplish a puzzle in the area or to revive and save prior to a boss encounter, use them!
- Special abilities are character specific, learn how to use them and when to use them. An example is Will's Psycho Dash which can be used to open passages and destroy stone statues.
- Learned skills in Illusion of Gaia don't go away. This is everything from running down inclines to clear large gaps, watching for the wind blowing / not blowing, using your telekinesis powers (L / R) to move things and retrieve items, to learning what forms of Will are best for different situations and so forth.
- Time is meant to feel like it's passing, for instance you spend some time sitting in the dungeon under Edward Castle.. well, just sitting there. This is meant to add some realism to the story.
- If you're searching for Red Jewels (and you should try to pick up at least 30 of the 50) be sure to look in every pot and behind nearly everything. I've only gotten them all once usually because I stupidly forget to grab an easy to find one early on. Even if you're not looking hard, just by checking pots you should have 20 easy 3/4 the way in. I say 30 because that will unlock Freedan's Dark Friar attack (not a spoiler since you can always view Gem's list). However this can be picked up alternately in Euro if you "wait" for it at the "right" moment. ;) Oh, and getting all 50 Red Jewels doesn't give you anything amazing, it's really not worth the hassle - what it does is kind of cool as it explains a few things (not important to Illusion of Gaia) and is like "hmm.. that's kind of interesting" but not worth all the crap you'll go through to do it.
- Will is both the lead character and the narrator, there are some continuity problems in the text with this if you want to be technical, but everyone should understand what's going on.
- Take your time, explore around, don't proceed unless you really want to.
(I stuck this in your blog too, Cmtz, as reference)
I'm in Freejia right now, time for bed.

I have played through SoulBlazer but I really didn't enjoy it as I didn't care as much for the story (or somewhat lack there of) and Illusion of Gaia was such a step up in all other aspects that it was really more of a chore to me to play SoulBlazer. Truly they're still all unrelated games though, the little "connection" thing in Illusion of Gaia, if you bust your ass to get to it, wasn't all that rewarding. LOL As for Terranigma, the last time I ran through was when Snes9x was the lead emulator, and the emulation was WAY buggy.

Looks like Earthbound will be the next RPG. More people have voted for that one than any other. So where are you guys in the game?

That's kind of funny, since before Illusion of Gaia was decided upon, I accidentially picked EarthBound by mistake. :embarrassed:

Freejia - same place as last night. I ended up getting caught with other stuff tonight and just finished some more maintenance with the ol' JVC X'Eye so I'll probably resume play after I finish packing up the tools.

I've been posting hits and help for the bottlenecks in the game at Cmtz's blog. I'm currently in Watermia after completing the stuff at The Great Wall. Anyone still playing along?

I am currently playing through Brandish, my first "RPG taste" as it were. Am I the only one who likes Brandish? Everyone seems to hate it...
I'd love to get in on this "play same RPG at same time" with yall but I'm on my own timetable... being an RPG newbie I have a specific list of the SNES RPGs I want to play in order.
Def. a good idea though! It's fun to play a game along with others. I beat SWAT KATS last night after dedicating myself to it for 3 days -- woulda been a blast to have 3, 4 others do the same and report their impressions as well.

LOL Well I didn't want to spoil it but since it seems that not all that many are playing along (hope that's not true) and I figure NO ONE will go through the trouble on the first pass... alright.
In Illusion of Gaia there are those 50 Red Jewels, and Gem the Jeweler offers to "tell you his secrets" if you collect all 50. So when you get all 50 Red Jewels Gem allows you enterance to his mansion - it's a BIG PAIN IN THE ASS in there. At the end of the mansion you fight Solid Arm from Soul Blazer. The battle sucks ass but the little connection things come of this. Basically after Blazer defeated Solid Arm in Soul Blazer it was broken into 50 pieces and scattered throughout the world (ie the 50 Red Jewels). Gem the Jeweler was actually the mastermind of the whole labor trade orginization that you first come across in Freejia, using the laborers to mine for the Red Jewels to reassemble Solid Arm. So by collecting the 50 Red Jewels you do Gem's dirty work for him and then have to defeat Solid Arm, which YOU brought back.
In other words it's a big booby trap and you get nothing for it. :P
still a cool little easter egg though

Naa, as with many other parts of the game that's there to force the feeling of time on the player. Not just "you're on a raft... 27 days later..." you have to sit through every few of those days.
Still back in Watermia just after the stuff at The Great Wall. Ended up playing Lagoon tonight so I'll get back to Illusion of Gaia later today.
