View Full Version : Using SCART cables to connect to component video?

I see that I can buy SCART cables for the Saturn,PSX, N64 etc. but they never made componenet video cables for these systems. Is there an easy way to use the output pins to connect to a component video tv?

Unless your TV is one of the rare TVs that has 'RGB Component' (check your manual), then there is no easy way. I don't remember any premade adapters that convert that convert RGB to Y Pr Pb(component video).

I thought Y Pr Pb was just another name for RGB. I read that it was the same. Is RGB superior to Y Pr Pb? I could at least use it to connect to a computer moniter, right? I thought it's better than making a cable from scratch.

Search Google for more relevant links. Btw, you can convert the RGB to VGA with an XRGB-2 upscan converter (or similar device) and then use it with the product in that top link.

I read on another website that shows how to connect Saturn/PSX/N64 etc. to VGA monitors using their RGB output pins. It showed how to build a very simple 1 IC circuit into a cable to convert it. You don't need to buy an expensive converter box. All the circuit does is strip the 60hz sync cycle from the RGB video signal that isn't used with VGA.

RGB is superior to Y Pb Pr...
this is only kind of related, but just today i decided to use an ISCAN PRO box to upgrade all 480i game signals to 480p and run them through a 17" computer monitor that i wasnt using... that iscan device accepts RGB (as the ps2 outputs), Y Pb Pr, s video and composite (and you dont have to unswitch them from the back- it has dipswitches on the front)- the thing works amazing, but unfortunetely costs more than a typical computer monitor (500$ last i checked) AND you also have to use a seperate audio device (preamp or headphones)- but to see post 1986 game systems scaled up to 480p its almost worth it-
highly recommended.

According to 2 technical friends of mine (one of which builds RGB cables for NTSC Cubes and does most mods), you can't do component through Scart. RGB isn't component either, but there isn't a lot of different quality wise between the two...

i can tell you this- people and companys that do high resolution art, or videos and use extremely high performance video displays use RGB because it does not distort the video image as much as Y Pr Pb

I would like to see this site. It sounds to me like they're feeding you a load of crock. BTW, the US N64 doesn't even output RGB.
