There's been a lonely looking boxed Cybiko sitting in my local thrift for some time now and I've been debating whether or not to give it a home on the "Handheld Heaven" shelf in my Rooma Dooma. But I don't want to just let it sit there. Is there any sort of current viability to these things as gaming systems? Is there an active community of homebrew developers and mod hackers coming up with ways to use these things far beyond their life cycle and in ways the inventors never dreamed? Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks.

I can comment that as far as a gaming system goes, it's not worth it at all. Unless there's some homebrew scene around it today don't bother.

Oh man, I completely forgot about these things... boy does that bring back memories of my early days in electronics retail. LOL They were cool little toys and overblown walkietalkies but not much more, remember there were two flavors...

I'd go ahead and get for a nice price. If something is programmable there's always some worth having it even if there's not a huge demand for it. I once got a TI calculator just to program on it and play my own games. Of course it's easy to win because you know how it works, but the time you can spend into learning something simple and even have friends/family play is a great experience. And yes, when you get bored with it or don't want to mess with it at all it can look good on a shelf.

Go for it if it's a fair price.

Of course, the websites are down now, www.cybiko.com, (it's a cell phone site now, I think)
but you can always get CDs full of games, apps, even an MP3 adapter and other stuff from ebay.

With Cybiko you can see were Nintendo took some ideas for the DS perhaps?

Bringing this thread up as it's the only time this YEAR cybiko's have been discussed.

I finally found an adapter that works on my classic model i got for 4 bucks or so. it does work! needs new batteries though.

so yeah, anyone use these? this one had pacman and tetris on it so i think the 4 bucks were worth it. where can i get a transfer cable or some new batteries? or a real AC adapter would be cool too. only places i could find online were in the UK so shipping costs more than the items...

can this thing IRC? i'm very curious to use this thing for SOMETHING. and of course any info on homebrew stuff would be welcome.
