All i can say is that Cell + Blu-Ray + 60GB 2.5" HDD = Piss high production cost.

For me it's all Kojima's fault. Stupid MGS is gonna cause me to sell my soul to Sony.

I hear that. LOL Hideo Kojima, Kazunori Yamauchi, and the eventual continuation of the Ace Combat franchise = a very, very poor InsaneDavid for awhile.

I'm REALLY glad to hear this. One of my biggest fears was that they were going to make it an add-on only type of thing like in the past.

w00t. Why Microsoft wouldn't make the damn thing standard is beyond me; at least Sony's confident enough to do so...developers won't need to worry about compromised, hard drive-less systems.
Maybe PS3 is starting to look interesting again - aside from those recent screenshots...yes, those...

Me thinks when it launches you'll understand. The bottom line is that a 60GB 2.5" HDD ain't cheap. Not but a long shot.

I'm sure they don't cost sony more than $30-$40 to manufacture and install. I would GLADLY pay an extra $50 to have it included. Hell, 2 memory cards are still around $35 for the PS2....

2.5" 60GB drives retail for over $169.99 USD and cost considerably more to manufacture then a regular HDD. I think $30-40 is aiming low. Besides given the estimated cost of all the other parts every dollar counts.

I guess sony should start buying them new off of ebay then.....
$50-$60 60gb 2.5" hard drives brand new (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&from=R10&satitle=60gb+2.5%22+-case+-enclosure&sacat=-1%26catref%3DC6&bs=Search&fsop=1%26fsoo%3D1&fgtp=&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D2&sadis=200&fpos=03235&sacqyop=ge&sacqy=&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=)

Haha well played. Actually i apologize for that. The drive i was looking at was very high end and Sony would never use high end parts.
$70-80 does seems to be more of an average for low-end drives. And remember eBay auctions are not valid price points.

I cant see how Sony could possibly sell this thing for less than $450.00 U.S. and even that would be at a great loss
But the rumors are that Sony plans on launching at $400.00 I just dont see how that could happen but well see

$400 would be a pretty good price given that it's fully backwards compatible (or so they claim now) with both the PS1 and PS2, plus it's got all those other features. I'll be surprised if they release it for such a low price though.

$450 would be doable witha hard drive and bluray. $400 would be a nice price, but since they flat out STATED that it would be very expensive, I can't imagine they'll release it for that price. $500 is starting to get to be too much to buy at launch, but since they KNOW it would sell out even at that price, I could see them doing it.

Dont forget the quantity discount they get for buying that many HDDs. Afaik Sony will produce 6 million PS3 to launch, then 1 million units each month.

Meaning they'll make 25 units, pretend that there's a shortage, then watch as everyone jizzes their pants over a malfunctioning and game-less system.

I hate to say it but the PS3 does sound pretty good. One of the main reasons that I bought the XBOX was so that I wouldn't have to deal with memory cards anymore but since the 360 has a choice you know not everyone is going to take advantage of it and at some point there has to be a standard. With a hdd on the PS3 plus all the games from PS and PS2 I might have to look into another Sony product even if the PS2 did kill my poor little Dreamcast.

60GB and upgradeable, lets just hope you can save all your PS1 and PS2 game saves to the Hard Drive also copy the ones you already have from your memory cards to the HD.

I'd like to see the full PS1 and PS2 libraries work on the PS3 first, since OPM recently spotlighting Tomba! must have been fun for people who only had a PS2....

We all end up owning them. I never planned to buy anything beside a ps2 but when it broke the first time I bought a Gamecube. Then I got a new PS2 and when that one broke I got an xbox. I know I will end up getting them all again but just not all at launch. The only other one I am getting at launch is the Revo but if the PS3 has something amazing at launch I may just have to get one.

Pfft, the PS3 is trying to hard. And most developers that exclusively made games for the PS2 have become multiplatform between the PS3 and the Xbox 360.

As much as i hate to agree with Xizer, he's absolutely right. When you look at everything coming out aside from developers directly owned by MS or Sony, or in league with them, there's pretty much nothing for exclusive games (MGS4 being the one glaring exception to the rule).
In the future systems are going to be judged on their features, not their exclusives and that's completely gonna change the way we think about a good system.

RPG's.
I think just about every rpg on every system is an exclusive. And the PS2 takes the cake in that genre by FAR.

Yes you're absolutely right. For now the RPG remains the one last divided genre, but that could be changing very soon.

Yeah I've heard the next FF game is probably going to be x360 and PS3. Since it's on both systems, I don't think it will change any of the japanese minds, but it sure won't hurt the 360 market in america.

I think the real keep to breaking up the RPG division is going to be Mistwalker's Blue Dragon.
If anything is gonna draw RPG fans to another system it's gonna be Hironobu Sakaguchi and if his Blue Dragon really takes off on the 360 then it's definitely going to RPG master Square that the 360 is a major market worth pursuing.
