I was thinking about this today, and have seen some responses over the past while questioning which is the correct way to pronounce Mario's name:
MARE-E-OH or MAHR-E-OH?
I pronounce it the first way, and always have. People have said it's MAHR-E-OH, but I like the other way better, and have called him MARE-E-O for 16 or 17 years...
So which is the "proper" way to say it, and which do you prefer to say?

You're from Alberta, huh? I hear it both ways, but I've always said "MAH-rio." I'm from the midwest. I guess that's the closest to the correct Italian pronunciation.

I haven't heard anyone say it any other way than Mahr-E-Oh.
Mahrio brothers. Mahrio Andretti. Mahrio Williams.
The Super Mahrio Brothers Super Show. TV even says it.

Mario himself says "It's me (Mahr-ee-oh)"
And that's the way I have always said it.

I still say "Mare-e-oh" as it used to be the more common(in Canada anyway) pronunciation even if it's further away sounding from the actual Italian name and what the game character says.

I get chills down my spine when I hear it as "Mahrio"

Ahhh, all depends on how I'm feeling and how to say it. If I'm doing a poor accent then I do Mehr-e-o, but otherwise I'll say Mar-e-o. Keep in mind I'm from the East Coast and in the smack middle of the country so there's northern and southern dielects from all over the place here. Anyone Italian?

Who cares what the real pronounciation is... I've always called him Marry-Oh instead of Marr-ee-oh. Ever since I was little. Dont care if it's technically wrong, I aint switching now.
I always call it Mahr-ee-o (the correct way :P), but it always seemed like the older people called it Mare-ee-o... both of my parents, grandma, and my friend's dad always called it Mare-ee-o brothers. It always really bothered me, but I don't remember ever saying anything about it to them ;) . I can't say I've ever heard another kid pronounce it Mare-ee-o though.

I've heard people call it merry-o, but I pronounce it properly.
As far as I'm concerned, merry-o is just as bad as pokee-man.

mairio?? That just sounds wrong. I mean, it's even pronounced in game as mahrio. I mean, I know everyone has their own dialect, but if the Japanese can say mahrio properly, no reason that everyone else can't.

I second the above post by Kedawa
I have always said Mario (Mahr-E-O) - coming from the italian word meaning Italian plumber with a stache (no)
Well since this creates so much to talk about....how about this. How does everyone say Luigi's name? I say it like this Lou-E-jee. i have never heard anyways say his name a differnt way.
And how about Yoshi, now I have heard two pronuctiations of his name....Yo-She and Yah-She. I say Yo-She, but have reason to believe that his actual name is Yah-She. In Smash Bros when you pick him the narrator says Yo-Shi, but when you throw taunt with Yoshi in that game he says Yah-She. That bastard should have stuck to the wierd noises he made back in Super Mario World and Super Mario Kart.

My dads name is Mario, he's always pronounced it mare-e-oh. When I hear Mahr-e-oh, even though it's that way in game, just makes me feel weird.

This topic pisses me off.
You have summed up this thread.
Listen, there is no debate. You may as well discuss wether the sky is blue. I originally thought this topic was a joke.
There is no doubt whatesoever as to the pronounciation of Mario.
Anyone pronouncing it as Mare-e-o is mispronouncing it. It must be a regional thing. The pronunciation is wrong, so get over it.

No Matías, the people who pronounce it wrong are simply disillusioned. Your pronunciation is the one and ONLY pronunciation and is universal. There really is no debate.
Can someone please lock this stupid-ass thread?

I don't even think it's a New York thing. I think "Merry-O" is mostly Long Island. I've lived in the city for a few years now, and the only people who I've heard pronounce it Merry-O were two girls I dated from Long Island, and my old roommate, who was also from there.

Wow, some people sure are defensive when it comes to pronouncing a video game characters name....
Next time I am wondering how millions of gamers pronounce something, I think i'll just skip the topic, and get the "official" way of pronouncing it from rbudrick, just so I don't "piss people off"
I dunno, I'll always call him "Merry-O", just because that's what I've always called him.

Then have fun pronouncing it wrong :D. In SM64 he does not say "It's a me, Merry-o" nor does the crowd cheer "Merry-o" in Smash Bros Melee. It has always been Mahrio.
I agree this thread is pointless and should be locked.

Not a bad idea. If people listened to me more, the world would be a better place. 8-) .

How is this even a thread?
Mario himself says "It's-a me, MAHRIO!"
Are you going to debate Mario himself on how to pronounce his own name?

This should be a poll.
I've always called him Mah-rio.
Although Mare-eee-oh sounds fine too.
I wonder how its pronounced in japanese.

It is pronounced the same, only the R sounds much like an L, though some may argue that sometimes the Italian or even some regional accents for Spanish do that too.

Y'know, for a Retrogaming forum, some of you folks don't seem to remember the roots! ;) Long before Mario was speaking his own name, the promotion for some of his starring games may have suggested an alternate pronunciation. Check out this vintage commercial on Video Game Ads:
Mario Bros. 2600/5200 (http://gameads.gamepressure.com/tv_game_commercial.asp?ID=1092)
Is MAHR-E-OH the definitive way to say it? Of course, Nintendo's made that quite clear. Is MARE-E-OH the wrong way to say it? Well, I think so. Is there possible justification for some people growing up thinking of the Italian plumber as MARE-E-OH? Judging from the announcer's pronunciation at least, I think there is. :P

Anyways, to end this debate it IS Mahr-ee-oh! It is true that old people always mispronounce it though, I have an Aunt who plays Mare-ee-oh games and rides on Yash-ee.

Yeah, I pernounce it Mahr-ee-oh, like I pernounce Pokémon Poke-a-mon, like it's supponed to be pernounced.
BTW, I've heard some people pernounce it Polka-mon, some Poke-ee-mon, and varly rarly Poke-ee-man. If you can't say Pokémon (Or Pokemon, if your browser dowsn't support the e with the little ' above it), then just say Pocket Monsters.

Mar-e-o for Mario, the plumber from mario bros.!
But if it's mario andretti, mare-e-o.
