i haven't checked out the book yet, but what's kinda cool is that rusel demaria actually lives in the same tiny ass town as me in oregon, i know his son max. he has a bunch of prototypes too but he won't part with em'. :/

I read it and thought it was very good. The pictures alone are worth it. The only beef I had is that they only spend a small amount of time on the early Atari stuff. Oh well, they can't all be perfect.

I'd recommend this book.

I got this one about three weeks ago myself and I'm still letting it all soak in. Wonderful stuff, well-written and arranged, excellent interviews, and the photos...well, let's just put it this way, I'd be more happy to show this off to my friends "outside the hobby" rather than Supercade. Visually, this book is what Supercade should've been, but wasn't - no big-arse pixellated, blown-up JPEGs in this book, and the ratio of style to substance are roughly equal.

I personally dug it.. but I'm not one to really criticize videogame books and mags. If it's literature about games.. I want it. :D

I got ZAP!, and The Ultimate History of Video Games. ZAP was about atari, and had some typing errors here or there. I really liked ultimate VG history. Very very detailed.

Well, that's just it - Supercade, Phoenix, Arcade Fever and UHVG/First Quarter all focused on arcade and/or console titles. Not that this is a bad thing - if you sprawl out into these other areas, as an author/researcher, it's hard to maintain a focus and keep a grip on everything and still turn out something even approaching definitive. No one had really focused on the computer games, and that was one thing I liked about this book.

To be honest, I'm not nearly as into computer games as consoles, but I still found High Score fascinating because it was all the stuff I remember from ads back in the day and then more. I hesitate to recommend it if you're only into consoles, but you'll probably still like it okay.

I didn't like it. And it's not because i don't like computer games. But i think a book that has 10 pages about EA and 4 pages on NES i have some beef with. Since Nintendo saved the American video game industry, i think they should have gotten a little more credit.

I really liked it. My wife got it for me from wal-mart for $14.00 :o
It's well written and has some awesome pics. Of course it doesn't have everything and it is a little lopsided (too much new stuff , not enough old), but I thought overall it was well worth it.

Having spent some time with it now, I'd say I recommend it. Even if you took out all of the computer gaming stuff, you'd still have a your money's worth The quality of the paper, pics and design overall is very good. Sure it could improve (and I'm sure there will be a volume 2) but it's a great start.
