View Full Version : So many "My collections" threads...

It's like suddenly everyone is posting threads about updates in their collections and links pointing everywhere on the web. Do you think it would be nice to have a thread for people to post updates to and receive feedback, somewhat like the finds? It would clear up some of the congestion I'm seeing by placing it all in a centralized place.

i think it should be a special little forum. let people have their one thread and 15 seconds of fame.

People should be allowed to post their collections in one thread, and update that one thread as necessary if they deem it so.
I enjoy looking at other folks' stuff. It's pretty much the foundation of the forum, I think.

mmm yea...
Atleast post some pictures in my opinion, I don't even look at the lists.

I also think that once the Room of Doom pages come back up, these posts will kinda go away somewhat-or at least be more entertaining than a text list.

Ya, I hear you there. It's just there's plenty of threads being pushed off the first page the get lost and never seen again, until 2yrs later. I guess it's also the way I'm structured, all the chaos of threads called the same thing made by different people.

I dont think it should be 1 thread for this. Usualy 1 "my collection" thread gets around 20 posts. It would be too unorganized if there was like 5 diffrent "my collection"s. A own category at the forum would have been better.

I agree. There's far too many "my collection" threads pushing interesting discussion down. (For that matter, there's still too much "how much is this worth" and crap like that.)

A forum? Yes.
A post? No.
A forum, however, may be slow, like the prototype central forum.

I don’t think so
it kind of falls into the same category as all the other posts about the same thing.
Should I get this? is this better ? What’s so great about this? This Vs that. It’s just a common thing people are interested in posting.
Should we have special sections for those too? - I say just let it be - they don’t really hog the page.
Also, It may not get as much attention in the special thread – and I think people that make those posts hope to get the maximum critique possible.
there is a room of doom section already - Isn't posting about an update bringing the attention there anyways? (if they have a section there - i know its down now)

I agree that something should be done. It's getting kind of ridiculous, especially the collections that are just links to a checklist or are purely text based posts. If you don't have pictures of your room of doom, you shouldn't make a seperate thread about it, at least not until a special forum or thread is created. In the meantime, just do like I do, and post a link to your collection checklist in your signature. If people are curious about it, they will click on it.

No. This sort of thing definitely belongs in Rooms of Doom, present availability notwithstanding. If one has the time to take and upload pics and lists into a thread, then one definitely has the time to set up an album over there and direct people towards it.

Boy are text lists boring. Not gonna lie, these recent 'My Collection' threads have all been passed up by me, unless there were pictures. I don't have the time to just read a bunch of games someone has.

I also do not understand the point of posting text lists of one's collection. When I look at someone's collection, I am more interested in how they have their room set up, what kind of shelving they are using, etc. I really don't give two shits about what games you have unless it is something REALLY cool, and then I would be more interested in how you have it displayed than just the fact that you have it.
And to answer the OP's question, yes. There should be a thread dedicated to this that people can add to buy linking us to their Room of Doom page, whether it be here on DP or elsewhere. Threads saying "check out my stuff" are OK, though they do push interesting discussion down, but additional threads created by users the "update" us on their room are entirely superfluous.
Just added a new trash can to my room of doom!
Check out my new poster...
(These are satirical examples. They are not links to anything)
I don't remember who (Tom something...) but someone was creating a new thread seemingly daily to update us all on any minor change he had made to his room.
This kind of stuff should all be in one thread.

Let me clarify, I don't think there should be a special forum. A post? Maybe. Really I think people should just wait for the room of doom thing to be back up.
I like seeing all everyone's collections too, but that's not what I want to see on this board.

I think having a single thread for this would make things far too difficult to distinguish individual comments for each person who's showing off their collections. Their could be a lot of confusion. However, it wouldn't necessary be that way either. I voted no, but I wouldn't mind much if it changed this way.

Well, creating a new Forum does have an advantage.
Rather then fill up the clasic forum with look at me threads, we can have a forum dedicated to those who feel the need for special attention without ever bothering those who dont wana look.
The downfalls that I can see are a bit different.
Requires more code to the board script with the adition of another forum. This could prove a problem as it may require the removal of an existing Forum. It also requires someone to go in and chage a nice chunk of code. Mind you, I realy dont know that much about such stuff and am making blind guesses here from what I have read over almost two years.
This is all guess work and I admit such. Requiring people to post their colection lists/pictures all in one thread would make it rather difficult to manage as many people here actualy want to know about other peoples stuff. We may see something someone has and down the road find ourselves able to aquire it from them. Also, is it realy hurting anyone to be able to say I have this stuff, look at it? True, I think some pictures should be required, but I dont see the harm im having someone post a list and or a bunch of pics saying they own something they enjoy. If it's too hard to switch to a previous page in the index of threads, you are lazy and deserve shock theorpy.

Maybe that should be the next Forum du Jour.
IMO, that music topic has run it's course. Time for a little change up. The collections (with pics, mind you) would be perfecto! :D

There are a lot at the moment but I don't think there is a need to go creating a new forum - there is already the whole Room of Doom section in itself. Having one thread for everyone's collections wouldn't be great, especially updating it and different peoples comments on things. I think leave it as it is. The room of doom feature is enough - I do agree that only one thread is needed per collection though - not per update, there were a lot by that one guy at one time

I'm mainly just thinking there's 5 threads about "My Collection" and they really could be sharing 1 thread. It's nutes because of they are all named nearly the same title! You have to refer to whom the main poster to follow a topic under these. It's so bland and annoying. If the topic could at least be something along the lines of:
"Finished my Xbox wall, check it out!" or
"Complete DC finally! Look and let me know"
Anything like that, but "My Collection", come on!
Easy solution...just don't look at them if you're not interested

Tack me on to the list of people who think this is a good idea. It could be like the Feedback Forum: 1 thread per user. When you do something new to your room, bump the thread with new pictures.

You know what else would help? Sometimes, when someone posts pictures of a very impressive collection, everyone posts replies like "That's so sweet homey dude!!!@!" Fine.
Sometimes, when someone posts pictures of a total crap collection or just a list of games, some people will still go in there and reply with "Nice stuff, buddycakes!"
Stop encouraging the people who post useless collection threads. The whole nicey-nice act is totally transparent when it's obvious from looking at the things that nobody's going to really care. I can't even count how many times I've looked at someone's collection thread and wanted to reply with "Man, I've seen better collections in cardboard boxes under overpasses along the highway"; but I don't because that's mean. Still, if every person who posts a crap collection thread gets all sorts of "love", then we'll only have more people posting about their stack of NES commons that they dug out of the town landfill.

Well, if it's that big of a problem, we could always start banning people on sight for posting their colections. I mean, seriously, it's nice and all that you actualy go out and support your hobby by buying these games and such rather then emulating it all, but frankly it's obvious that no one realy wants to hear about it. We all got our colections which are always much, much better then what ever anyone else could have, so let's just ban them on sight. Make a colection thread, get banned.
This solves all problems as it will quickly teach anyone new that colection threads are not apreciated, and also make this board uber elite for the most lazy of gamers. It's so hard to use the search engine, it's even more hard to well, click that little 2 or 3 or 4 up in the index for each forum.

Well, seeing as I posted my own thread about my collection a few days ago, I may as well say something. Now, I just joined here, and right after posting in the introductions thread, I figured "What the hell? I'm new here and since this is a forum with a focus on collecting games, I may as well see what people thing of my own collection.". Mostly I was looking for critisism, not the generic "It's good" comments. Now I don't have a nice digital camera besides a shitty Logitec Webcam, nor do I have the money for one, so all I can do for now is have a list.
Also, a new forum specifiically for lists would be good indeed, in my opinion, with the whole "One topic per user" idea.
Just sayin'.

I never said I wasn't interested, I said it's just cluttering things up to me and apparently others as well. One central thread or a dedicated topic just seems a bit more realistic than a ton of threads with the same name. Nothing against new posters and their collections, I'm all for them.

And what do you guys mean when you say to wait for Room of Doom to come back? Do you mean the section in Tips & Tricks??

When Room of Doom is back up we think there will be fewer posts about their collections and a link would be provided elsewhere, freeing up the posting first page.
As for Tips & Tricks, I'm guess they're talking about the idea of replacing it with a forum dedicated to threads talking about updates on our collections and rooms.
I'm guessing here so no slamming. 8-) I'm all for any and all forum topics that have a demand.

I'll say yes, for the time being, until the ROD section is up again. I don't think it's a big deal. I don't have a problem with people posting their collections, but it's just like anything else...we wouldn't have nine different threads about the same game. It's just good housekeeping IMO, it's not personal or elitist.

Oh yeah I also hate those IGN game collection lists.
They only go by alphabetical order of the game title, which mixes up which consoles they're on.
