Here's the story. A few months ago, I was searching on eBay for Sega Genesis lots when I noticed a particularly odd auction. The auction's long gone now, but here's a picture I saved from it.

Big picture. Link (http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b144/-SuperYoshi-/1187976_o.jpg)

At first I had thought the s/he had a PAL copy of Sonic 1 for some reason, until after a second glimpse I noticed that it clearly said Genesis on the top where Mega Drive should be. Is this some kind of a pirate copy? I can't really think of many explanations for this, but I've been looking for another copy on eBay for some time now. So far, I've found two others, I've noticed that the others came in lots with the original Genesis system (The version without the Liscensing screen every time you boot it up).

Anyone else have this same copy of Sonic 1? Not to mention, is it rare or valuable in any way?

It's a Canadian box. It's one of the very few games like Pikmin 2 that had different box art in Canada than the US.

I have it and no it's not rare at all.

Ha, wow. I had always figured all NA boxart was the same for US and Canada. I'm glad that question's finally been answered. I know GameFAQs sure as hell was no help.

Hmm, you did? The only thing I remember about the thread I started was someone came up with a theory about how some PAL artwork got leaked to the US market. Course, I didn't really check the topic much...heh.

... that's Canadian? I've seen a few boxes with that art and always assumed it was a US variant (like the Not For Resale boxes).

I have a Brazilian copy of the game that has that same cover.

Didn't you post this question on GFaq's a week or 2 ago? If yes, I'm Carnage83, and I gave you the same exact answer you got from NeoZeedeater answer over a week ago... no help... pfft. Not everyone over there is incompitent, read all the replies you get.

Edit: Disreguard what I just said, it seems it was Emuaust who posted that topic.

Heh, it's allright. I posted my topic almost a year ago, in the summer. I only got a few replies, no one I remember posted anything about it being from Canada.

EDIT: Haha, just checked out the Genesis board on GameFAQs and saw the topic you guys were talking about, which was only posted about a week ago. He seemed to get a lot more help than I got. Everyone seemed to ignore mine back in 2005 XD

I found a loose copy of that very sonic at an eb years and years ago and pretty much asked the same question (didn't get much of a response) though i did eventualy find out it was just a canadian release.

I even made a quick comparison picture with a few other sonic varients i had at the time here:

Quite a few of the earlier black-box games have slightly different covers in Canada compared to the US version - there's about 25 listed at Guardiana (http://www.guardiana.net/database/search.php?string=&field=title&develop=all&editor=all&console=all&genre=all&country=16&players=all).

Most are just the PAL cover with a Genesis logo, but there's a couple of unique ones - Super Volleyball uses the same pic as the Japanese release instead of the crappy US one, and there's an Irwin Electronics cover for Altered Beast (probably the pack-in version) that has both English & French text on the front.
