The man, the myth, the guy who started Madden, sits down with Game-Rave for an exclusive interview and shoots the breeze.

"Or Madden, since I designed, directed, and produced it..."

LOL He also left out "bought it", as in EA bought/released Imagic's Touchdown Football game ...

... and then turned it into Madden Football

Plus, EA bought the rights for the name (Madden Football) from CBS, after they closed down their video game division. So, other than changing Touchdown Football from a horizontal side-scroller to a vertical one, they really didn't do much of anything.

Cool interview, man! Thanks for including my question. He seems like a pretty cool guy.

So what you're saying is that Madden even managed to make it's way onto the 7800.

Wow, Hawkins challenges the "$400 is the kiss of death" theory and you guys try to box him in about the Army Men games! :D Oh man, that article's awesome. Time to mentally bookmark that site (done).

Bumping this up to the top, plus I think that should be linked elsewhere.

You gotta better pic of him, though? Also, when's that one from? It looks like the 90s, but that's the lighting (he looked slightly different then). I found that pic as the first Google hit, incidentally, and it wasn't quite so blurry.

I forgot to ask him for a headshot in the interview, and since #vbender wanted to READITNOWWTFOMGBBQ when I let them in on it, I had to look for a pic. I used his image from his new web-site. There was a really nice one on another news site, but I did not know if it was a public pic or theirs, so I used the one I knew was public.

Thanks for the compliments, it's been getting some great press.

Here's to more of them,

Jason

So what you're saying is that Madden even managed to make it's way onto the 7800.

Madden Football didn't first come out until 1989 (for the C-64, anyway). Touchdown Football came out a few years before (for the Atari 8-bit, 7800, C-64, and PC Jr.)

The Atari 8-bit computer version came out in 1986 and was programmed by SofTalent. Interestingly, the 7800 version has a 1985 EA copyright date on it (and was done by Imagineering), and a 1988 Atari copyright date (which is when it actually came out).

PS: Nice of Trip to leave out all the other people who worked on Madden Football, esp. Robin Antonick. What the heck, Robin only helped design AND program it...

It's funny how EA is now when back in the C64 and 3DO days they could do no wrong. He's right about the Army Men games, I've never tried one because the critics have slagged them so much.
