I've noticed that the Sega Saturn has two different types of standard hand controllers. One is the controller you see in the instruction manuals (the larger, angular one), and the other is a smaller, more rounded version. My Saturn came with the smaller one.
Can anyone shed some light on this?

Smaller, rounded.. Do you mean the "cheap" ones, as I call them? The smaller rounded ones come in other colours (I have a white one) and they seem more cheaply made. I find it's D-pad sucks compared to the larger black ones.
When the Saturn debuted in the US, Sega released it with a redesigned controller. It seemed puffier and in general kind of sucked compared to the Genesis 6-button and the JPN Saturn pad.
Sega eventually realized the error of its ways (maybe due to cost cutting?) and included a superior JPN-style pad with later shipments of US Saturns.
