Did anybody read this crap? ARRRGGGHHH! The gist of it, in my opinion, is "Golly, the Japanese sure have this DS situation down! Here in America, us retards only buy DS's for children!" Give me a break! This whole America vs. Japan thing with videogames is driving me crazy. I understand there are cultural differences, but in my opinion, both systems are doing well in BOTH territories. Why re-hash the crappy launches of both? It seems like these stupid sites try their hardest to pit companies against each other, regardless of animosity or not. My wife has a DS, I plan on buying a PSP. Yeah, sure, when we have kids I'd love to throw Trauma Center to my (future) 2-year-old! 1-up, you biased SOBs, grow up! There's room for both!
Sorry for the rant.

I'm not going to write a lengthy rant about it, but I agree with you. I've yet to see an ounce of journalistic integrity from anyone at 1Up, and their reviews and other articles absolutely reak of bias, payola or what have you. Their reviews tend to be all over the map, even when it comes to titles that every other major review site is lauding over. That particular article wasn't too bad, but that sort of thing sadly ends up being the exception.

I thought the article was pretty good. Now, I own a DS and not PSP, so I might be slightly biased. Not that there aren't several games for the PSP that I' like to have though. To each their own I guess.
Cheers,
Ben

I's like to extend that to include EGM as well.

Lunacy. I could care less if "kids" are buying DSes, even though that isn't necessarily true. But if that is true (and it's not), the DS must be the coolest thing in school, because it's selling more than the PSP IN BOTH COUNTRIES. Articles like these just create more idiotic fanboys, on both sides.
I wish people would stop arguing over such irrelevent tripe and have fun playing their games. Isn't that what gaming is really about? Having fun? The original point of gaming has become more nonexistant than the meaning of Christmas.
I's like to extend that to include EGM as well.
A good example would be #186. Quite possibly the worst issue of EGM ever printed.

Oh that was a terribly issue. Just awful.
Their DOA4 review was terrible too. It's sad when you read a review and it makes you think they just played the game for 20 minutes and said, "Well it's got tits, we don't actually need to play the game. Our readers are stupid horny tools."

Considering that Chris Kohler once wrote a book called "How Japanese Video Games Gave the World an Extra Life," I think the article's rather even-handed and accurate.
Also, I suspect that Atlus could release Princess Crown here if they pushed it, but they have a full plate as it is.

I like EGM, but I can see why a lot of people don't. I appreciate it more for its sense of humor and interesting personalities than its journalistic tendencies. Behind OXM and Game Informer, it's among my favorites.

Of course it was. The reviewers complained about Metroid Prime 2: Echoes being hard. Wusses.

I can concur with anyone saying the PSP is doing quite well here in America.
But lets just be honest with each other. The PSP is getting drop kicked by the DS in Japan.
Nintendo pulling commercials to kill demand for the DS Lite?
Ridiculous.

Deja vu. They did the same thing with the GBA SP, making "BRIGHTER SCREEN" commercials to harpoon Micro sales. Not that many people wanted Micros in the first place.

Im with Fenris, if anyone has the knowledge and exp to write an article like this, its Kohler.
Thats not to say that the horse race journalism that is often used with console/handheld wars isnt annoying, it is. However, if more articles were written like this, and by someone who could truly be objective (like Kohler) the various wars would have a truly useful dimension added to them.
Oh, and if you get the chance "Power Up!" is a great read.

If you think it's bad now, just wait for IGN's amazingly glowing reviews of PS3 titles... Already they're heralding the machine to be absolutely amazing.
Know why? Because Gamespy is making the online component for PS3 as a full partner of Sony, and IGN own Gamespy.
Wouldn't surprise me if Warhawk, Untold Legends, and I-8 all get over 9 out of 10.

I read though the article really fast so I may have missed something but from what I did pick up I didn’t notice anything that was trying to sway readers opinion
also i think they write the VS articles because many people like to read them - common, isn’t the majority of the gaming public fanboys? aren’t vs articles the stuff they would want to read?

...If you think 1Up.com is bad, then you should see the X-Play Forums! If anyone discovers that you like Gamecube or even PlayStation 2, you will get bashed by the Xbox Fanboys!
Here is an example:
Xbox is Way Better then PS2!
PS2 Gives you more bang for your buck, because you can play PSone games!
How can you even say that about PS2! Who the hell really wants to play some s***ty PSone games when you can get an Xbox with Halo!
Yeah, that's what It's like over at X-Play Forums...

Nothing beats the "Samus is such a Master Chief ripoff!" thread. It went on for twelve pages before anyone pointed out the obvious.

Who really pays attention to 1up anyway? Everyone knows they are jaded and it shows.
Game journalism should be about showing both sides and not displaying favoritism.
Oh well...

I would say that neither system has reached a critical amount of penetration to really show any momentum towards victory. Who knows what the actual penetration levels of either system are right now. Until I can commonly see either system in the hands of normal people, I would say both systems aren't winning.
Besides, I thought that the DS was being purchased by women who want their Nintendogs fix...
