View Full Version : Anyone make their own boxes for unreleased games?

Anyone make their own boxes/labels for "unreleased" games or games that didn't come in the standard packaging?

A *very* cool 3-D remake of SNAKES was released for the N-Gage. It's a free release but only available for download and won't come out in standard packaging. Yet it deserves it.

I've got a few spare (crap) N-Gage games... I could get a small MMC card for cheap and put Snakes on the card by itself. I'm going to take some of the artwork I've gotten off the net and make my own insert and maybe even instructions. Pull out the packaging for the crap game, insert the new label and possible instructions, print out a little label for the MMC card itself and there you have it. It's a real N-gage specific game and not some freebie that's playable on just any phone... why not give it a home with all the other "real" ones?

DarXide would make a cool N-gage box too... even though it's a Symbian 60 cell phone game (and will play on a variety of phones.) How many people can say they have a boxed DarXide in their collection?

I'm also going to shrink down the artwork for UNDER DEFEAT for Dreamcast and make it fit in a regular CD case (as opposed to the DVD case it came in.)

Anyone like doing this sort of thing? It's a lot of work and the results can sometimes look shoddy depending on your level of talent (none in my case) and your printer and paper, but it's cool to come up with something all your own based on a hodgepodge of scanable and downloadable artwork.

I haven't done this for a console game, but I did do something similar for a Stepmania (the PC-based Dance Dance Revolution clone) compilation that I put together. Custom front and back case inserts, complete with game description and screenshots, and even a barcode and ESRB rating. I also created labels for the 3 DVDs, but I never actually printed any out. I guess that sometimes I have too much time on my hands. :)

When I pre-ordered I-Ninja for my GC just so I could get Pac-Man Vs., I was thoroughly dissapointed to learn Pac-Man Vs. came in a little cardboard sleeve. So I hunted around online and found a full sized GC insert someone had designed for Pac-Man Vs. I printed it out, slapped it into an empty DVD case, and voila! Custom Pac-Man Vs. case.

Now I just need to find an actual GC case to put it in. Not a difficult thing to do, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I did this also, but I wanted to keep the original cardboard sleeve and just put in inside the case... turns out that it won't fit in a GC case, but it will in a DVD case. Ah, well. Kept it in a DVD case anyway.

I did this for the Mech Assault that came with Xbox live since it only had a cardboard slipcase.

I bought the game BMX XXX for the cube used - it came in a generic black GC case, so I found the insert from the xbox version scanned online, screwer with it, and all the sudden it's got the nintendo seal of quality on it :D

Although, yeah, it's a crap game :(

The first level's kinda fun, but ... (I don't even need to finish this sentence do I?)

Ya might wanna check this NTSC-UK thread, fishsandwich - someone else has made CD-sized artwork for Under Defeat already ;) Looks pretty nice!

I have Propeller Arena and Half Life in proper blue PAL DC cases with front/back cover inserts and disk art. I also have PBA Bowling 2001 for the DC in a normal CD case with NTSC-U style inserts and disk art.

Beats of Rage DC is also in a CD case with NTSC-J style front/rear inserts (designed by Yakumo iirc).

I have Space Fantasy Zone for PC Engine in a CD case with front cover. I'll get around to making a back cover and maybe disk art one day.

I'm just longing for the day we actually need inserts for Geist Force (I've seen a scan of the NTSC-J cover), and an MVS ShockBox insert for Chotetsu Brikin'ger/IronClad. Oh, and PC Cocoron.....

EDIT: That's a point, need to do a proper MD case insert for Sonic and Knuckles, based on the NTSC-J boxart. Damn shitty cardboard boxes.

THANK YOU!!!!!

That saves me a hell of a lot of work for what would be ugly finished product based on my meager skills. I had hoped someone would make one. Really, I KNEW someone would... it would just be a matter of when and where the hell would I find it. It's not on cdcovers.cc yet

Again, THANKS!

I kind of do this, but I tend to just modify covers for existing games. Here's one I did recently, I made it big enough to store all three games.

Awesome topic!!!

Although I have never done it, I always wanted to recreate the packaging for several SNES games that were never released here but have fan translations. I figured I would burn a new SNES rom and then make the box, manual, etc. Of course, that is a hell of a project. Oh well, maybe if I win the lotto and don't have to work anymore.

I think i have modified some covers for use on some BOR games/compilations and i believe i have altered some Japanese artwork for some Mega CD games to use with SCD games that i have aquired without any type of box.

Thats a very nice cover there slip81.

The label would be easy and the instuction book, while seriously work-intensive, would be ok.

Making a decent-looking SNES box would be a NIGHTMARE.

I stick to inserts... CD cases, Genny and SMS boxes, N-Gage, that sort of thing.

And where did that cook back insert go of Border Down on the website anagrama posted? It's gone! (I grabbed it last night, though.) Maybe the guy is redoing it and adding a front insert? I hope so.

I just remembered another one I did. I made a cd insert for super puzzle fighter II. I lost the original and was going to print it off the net, but made my own based on the japanese cover. :)

www.cdcovers.cc has lots of disc covers to download if your games are lacking too!

Kickass GTA trilogy cover!

I did this for the Metroid Prime 2: Echoes bonus disk since I had gotten mine as a freebie from the MyNintendo registration rather than the one included with the Metroid Prime GC bundle.

http://img475.imageshack.us/img475/8389/metroidchronicle0zp.jpg

"The Metroid Chronicle" was the most prominent feature on it besides the Prime 2 demo itself so I figured I'd make that the focal point. The font was basically the closest I coulf find to the one used in Metroid Prime.

Don't think this scan is really suitable for printing. Lost the original file. :(

Yeah, it'd certainly be worth making a box and label for StarFox2.

The box shouldn't be too hard, just means making up a box-flat. But it's a damn lot of artwork to deal with.

www.SEGAGAGADOMAIN.com claims that Sega has proclaimed that Under Defeat is the LAST official Dreamcast game. If this is true, then we know the answer to the eventual question...

Q: "What was the LAST official Dreamcast game?

A: Under Defeat

I couldn't find that proclamation.
