they would have a cd-based system that would have 80% of total software sales :) like they planned 10 years ago ;) the xbox would still be there (ms has far too much money to give up) but nearly no xbox exclusive titles, perhaps there would be a sega system but i don't think so :)

As unlikely as any of the big three merging with one another, the more likely situation would be Microsoft taking over one of the other companies. They only have like 48 billion dollars in cash just sitting around collecting interest.

I was thinking about this last night - sort of. I was thinking more along the lines of what if Nintendo stopped making consoles. Would I care.

Nope.

As long as they're making games I'll be buying those games - regardless of what console plays 'em.

To the topic at hand...

Presumably Sony is giving Nintendo something for their software to make it exclusive. I'd bet Microsoft would broker something similar with a Sega or a Capcom say. They'd have to in order to compete.

If Nintendo did stop making consoles (but wasn't partnered with anybody) I'd hazard a guess that they'd be multiplatform (as opposed to Sega's strategy of releasing certain games on certain platforms). Although if they did got to one platform I would probably guess Microsoft (if only because of the animosity over the SNES add on).

Saying it's impossible is fan boy talk. *Nothing* is impossible my friends.
