a quote from former Official U.S. Playstation magazine editor-in-chief editor John Davison from the magazines 100th issue.
---------------------------------------------------------

"The thing about the Metal Gear (4) video is that when you read everyones response to it, and how much better it looked than the 360, I think what WAS UNIQUE ABOUT THAT WAS THE ARTISTRY OF IT, AS OPPOSED TO THE TECHNOLOGY. Kojimas got an eye for camera angles and posing things and lighting things, and IF HE APLIED THAT TO THE 360 OR REVOLUTION, IM SURE IT WOULD LOOK JUST AS IMPRESSIVE.

I think we are getting to the point now where the tech is so good that to just do a 3d engine and a fixed camera and stuff isnt enough. if you want to impress, youve got to...you have to be artists. And you have to approach it the way movie directors do."
-------------------------------------------------------

Now im well aware of the fact that many here at DP will say that this is an old arguement BUT this pertains now more than ever especially with the all the next gen systems Xbox360,PS3 , and especially the Revolution since this is exactly the point/message that Nintendo has been trying to get out there since the announcement of how the Revo will be only "slightly" more powerful than the original Xbox and their reasoning behind it.

This not only pertains to the next gen but more specifically the current gen is a prime example of how a little extra horsepower means next to nothing on the overall aspect of things when it comes to competing same-generation consoles.

Yes,yes I know NES won over the Mastersystem and some still say the Genesis one over the more "colorful" SNES and all that , but lets be straight up, back in "the day" of BITS,speedprocessing, and mode-7 and all that techno babble it was more about who had this many colors and that many sprites- or polygons with the 32-64 bit systems=Horsepower. The PSone was a 3-D powerhouse when compared to the Saturn or any other 3-D wannabes at the time * Jaguar/3DO etc and the PSone won that gen by being the most powerful system for once.

Those days were OVER the since the launch of the Dreamcast and all the specs geeks in the world couldnt change the fact that the PS2 (the underpowered one as many of this forum likes to call it  ) won this generation by a landslide not becuase it had a few less polygons here or there but becuase it had most importantly CONTENT= GAMES.

Not only that the (most underpowered one) featured some of the most brilliant games every created through sheer artistry and the Talent of the programmers, producers and directors of games like ICO, Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3,Katamari Damacy, Shadow of the Colossus ; games that had no need to rely on an extra polygon here or bumpmap there to be both a commercial and critical success (well except ICO wich was not as succesfull $$$ ).

The perfect example of how artistry in a video game means more now than it ever did back in the 16-32 bit days is Metal Gear Solid 3 there is no way in hell any self respecting gamer can say that "it would have been better on Xbox or a next gen console" and really mean it or more to the point BELIEVE IT.

As far as pure graphical horsepower goes just look a game like Namcos incredible graphic showcase for PS2 Tekken 5 this game looks just as good as ANY high end Xbox 1 game and would still look very nice when placed along side the likes of DOA4 on Xbox360.

Thats why any fellow gamers out there concerned about the Revo being "underpowered" need not to worry since those days are looooong gone and have been since the current generation began wether many of us gamers or even the videogaming industry knew it or not.

The playingfield is more level now than it ever has been.

In the end its all up to the artists of the new age as to who will be crowned king of the next generation.

as much as i agree with sabre2922's statement i have to point out that each company's media hype machine wages half the war themselves.

how many people here have ipods? and of those how many have one because it's a household name, and they bought it not realizing why. an ipod is not a superior product to any other, it's just one of many, the difference is it has media attention and cultural roots that reach every the most remote locations, hell even my parents know what an ipod is, even if they don't understand what mp3's are or ever owned a computer.

same thing when i hear a mother talk about her son's game system, it's always either a nintendo or playstation because they are household names, it could be a dreamcast and it wouldn't matter, once you make a product a cultural icon it cements it's place in society.

microsoft knew this when they threw a MTV launch party for the 360 with all these big name celebs, and all of a sudden it's "cool" to have a 360, and now here they are with a nice fanbase going into this next war, hell no one even calls it a xbox 360 anymore, and i just realized it's iconic status as i typed this, mission accomplished Bill. :P

That is a very valid point.

Just for the record my friends I was very hesitant to post this to say the least.

Then I thought of the company that we all/fellow gamers keep on this board so I was hoping for the best in that the overall point of this post would not be lost and be understandable not only to those who have both lived and experienced all these years of console wars but to the well experienced and most importantly unbiased-if there is such a thing- point of view as to not only where our favorite hobby is heading but where it could possibly end up : for better or worse ;)
