That means my middling Boxy Boy score was achieved on a nonstandard MAME32 build. Seemed to play OK, but if you want to invalidate the score, go ahead. Serves me right for treating a self-extractor like an installer.
As stated in the official rules, you can use any version of MAME that you want. I am not going to invalidate anything.
Glad you got it worked out.

When I installed MAME32 0.95, I pointed the self-extractor to a directory where I had an old version of MAME32 already installed. I thought it would overwrite my old mame32.exe; I didn't realize it would create and extract to a /mame32 subdirectory. So I was running an ancient version without knowing it, and apparently Klax really wasn't supported back then. Obviously I haven't been keeping up with new MAME versions for a while.
Didn't think of that but yes, MAME can get grabby concerning directories and installs.

I'm liking Klax. :)
For the tournament, do we have to start on Level 1 or are any of the opening three choices allowed?

I'm guessing it's going to be on level 1 but... *waits for Jibbajaba*

Yes please start on level 1. Sorry I didn't make that clear.

Scores posted; rankings updated. New game will be posted tonight.
What happened, William? All that trouble and then no score?

My bad... didn't realize the deadline was yesterday. My sense of what day it is is all screwed up due to the long weekend.
My score would have been third, fwiw.

I feel like an idiot now. I totally forgot the due date, and never submitted my score.

I'll try to start sending out a reminder e-mail on the day that the score is due, then. I don't like it when this sort of thing happens.

I don't like it when my best game was split down the middle because I got stupid on the 40 Tiles Wave. Geez, looking at my game over snap I realized that I had the empty space in the well to just dump blocks constantly and I would have advanced on - only 8 tiles were left. LOL That's what I usually do / are supposed to do at the end of that wave but for some reason on that one game I tired to be all slick (had X's earlier on) and make Klaxes for points. :/

It's more my fault than anything. I wasn't paying attention to what day it was, and completely forgot. Had I submitted my score, I would've been in the top 8.

Wow, I can't believe I got 4th. Imagine if I wasn't colorblind, I could own on this game :D

Ugh. Y'know, this round has forced me to a realization: I don't really like Qix after all. That's tough for me to admit, because I used to have a great fascination with the game. I never knew it existed until I ran into it while on vacation back in the '80s. I loved the sound effects. Somehow I happened to have a cassette recorder on me at the time and taped them. Then something like ten years went by and I never saw the game again. I kept the cassette; it became a precious reminder of the glory days of arcades.
After MAME came out, Qix was one of the first games I tracked down. And I enjoyed it -- in small doses. I still love the concept, but its execution is too irritating. You have to make a tiny motion, then wait, then make another tiny motion, then wait, then make another tiny motion, then get killed by the bloody Qix which suddenly flew across the screen in a half-second. Too much frustration, not enough action for my tastes.
I know the strategies for achieving high scores in this game, yet I still suck at it. LOL Think I'll give it one last shot before turning in my score, then put it aside for a good while.

Since no one's posted it yet, if you are using a fresh install of MAME v0.95 with most of the default settings, you will be prompted to select language among other things for this romdump. Press F1 repeadedly until the Qix attract screen comes up, ie the game.

Web server is back in action. I have uploaded the page and ROM for round 5's game. I will update the scores and whatnot tonight. But I can tell you the matchups for this round.
Mr. Foodmonster vs. jcheatle for the championship
O2William vs. Scooterb23 for third place
The game we are going to play is called "Sparkz". It is an arcade game made by Atari back in 1992, but it was never released. I don't know why, because I think it is a cool game and an interesting variation on the "falling pieces" sub-genre of puzzle games.
Anyway, go get the game here: http://mameleague.jibbajaba.com/tourn1.htm
The scores will be due on Satueday night.
Chris
EDIT: Play the game in the normal, easy, NO BONUS mode.

A break sounds good. How about the last three games worth of updates then I wont bother you for awhile? :)

I have updated the spreadsheet on my puter, and just need to upload them. There was a delay because I made an error in the matchups. InsaneDavid should have been playing for first place in the last tournament, but wasn't due to a scoring error on my part. He didn't play at all in the last round (assuming that there was no need, I would imagine), so I wanted to let him know and give him a chance to submit a score. He declined, so now I just need to upload the scores and announce the winners, along with paying out meseta for both this and the previous tournament.

Sorry about that guys, I was leaving the night scores were due and figured I'd have time to play - thought I should always submit scores no matter what. Schedule got mangled, ended up leaving early, so I never submitted a score - really wish I had now but there just wasn't any time. Will I be able to register for subsequent tournaments even though I may miss a few of each round? I really just want to keep my average up when possible this summer but I'll be gone most of the later part of July - early August. Gone as in away from home and able to run MAME.

You can register for the tournaments but you don't need to. Anyone can submit scores and I will add them to the rankings list. The only point of actually entering the tournament is if you are trying to win.

I too am perfectly fine with the break, especially given the semi-random schedule we've been going with (not to mention a seeming general lack of involvement). Some R&R is definitely in order.
However, if InsaneDavid was supposed to be in the finals, who was the mistaken player? I only ask because we haven't seen the scores from the past few rounds. Also, I think my 2 million + on Sparkz is good enough to win the finals (I hope). I just wouldn't want to win the title and then have it taken away, like in pro wrestling or something. LOL
Anyway, yeah... hit us with some results and then we'll leave you be. Thanks.

I'm doing it right now, so they will be up in a few minutes. The mistaken player was O2William, who didn't submit a score in one of the rounds, and therefore should have been out.
But then I have another problem, because out of the 4 players who should have been participating in the finals, only 2 submitted a score (Scooterb23 didn't submit one either), so are Scooter and InsaneDavid tied for third with a score of 0?
Here's first and second:
1st: jcheatle
2nd: Mr. FoodMonster
We could have a playoff for third place, except that InsaneDavid isn't at a place where he can play MAME right now. Maybe we just shouldn't have a third place this time...
Suggestions?

OK, all scores are updated and the rankings sheet is updated with the exception of any kind of bonuses for the puzzle tournament, which I am not going to add until we figure this out.
My suggestion is that there is no third place finisher, and that the third place meseta is divided up between the first and second place finishers. No extra bonus points would be given to them (it would stay at 50 and 25).

Sounds fair to me Mr. Jibba. I'm ticked that I couldn't get my score in, but such is life sometimes. Everything is fully fuctioning again, and I'll be ready for the next time.

Well, too bad I couldn't get third place, but it was my own fault for missing a score deadline. I think I would been in the running for second place if I hadn't. But, a winner is me anyway because this contest introduced me to Sparkz, which is an awesome game I probably never would have noticed on my own.
Thanks Jibba!

Alright, that's what I'll do throughout most of this summer then.
I'm good with the 3rd place points being split between 1st and 2nd as well. Sorry for the mess. LOL
