While shopping around today I found a shop that had some old sealed/new NTSC/J PS1 games. I picked up Raiden DX -- been looking for it for a long time with no luck.
Problem is I want to play it, not keep it sealed, so if the sealed/opened value is greatly different i'd prefer to just flip it and get a used copy rather than open it.
I would guess an excellent used copy with obi would run at least $40 or so (or am I wrong), what about the sealed?

Small update (5 minutes later) -- I do wonder if it's not an Asia version instead of Japan, though, since the picture on Play Asia (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-8u-77-7-49-en-15-raiden-70-4gd.html) looks different than mine (mine's in English).
Perhaps I should snap a pic...

I believe a pic would certainly be helpful... I know Raiden DX was re-released at a budget price, so you might as well tear that one open if that's the case.

It's not the re-release -- that has a yellow obi, right?
In any case, here's a pic I just took:

Sorry about the poor quality, I took it with my phone!
You can see the obi's in English, which is what makes me think it's the Asia release, not the Japan. Any idea?

To tell if it's an Asian or Japanese release, I think you can just check the bottom left corner of the back of the case... it should say FOR JAPAN ONLY for Japanese release, etc.
At least there's nothing on the box that definitely makes it budget title, which I suppose makes it more likely it's an original version. This makes me wish I had picked up the re-release when I was in Japan, at least then I could give you a better answer, unfortunately I don't remember well enough to be sure... sorry! Anyone else?

Yeah, I got screwed recently buying an Asia release playstation title.
Check the back of the case. If there is no "For Japan Only" in the lower right, if there is no barcode at the right side, if there are words like "English", "Japanese" and "Chinese" in the yellow box, then it is most likely a crappy Asia release. There are a few other minor things you can check, but the ones I just listed should determine whether it's an authentic Japanese release.

It's definitely an Asia release.
There's no For Japan Only on it, so I said "Screw it!" and opened it. The manual is all in Japanese, but there is an explanatory insert in English for the scoring, controls, powerups, etc... I've seen that in all NTSC/J Asia releases I have, so I am pretty confident that's what it is.
Well, I wanted the game and had been looking for it (to play) anyway, so no loss at all. Now I can play it! :)
