In the latest GI issue, they posted their Top 10 of the TG-16 system in the Classic GI section.
10. Ninja Spirit
9. Neutopia
8. Legendary Axe
7. Spallterhouse
6. Gates of thunder
5. Bonk II: Bonk's Revenge
4. Alien Crush
3. Military Madness
2. Blazing Lasers
1. Y's Book I & II
Any thoughts?

Yeah...that they're insane. Legendary Axe is TOTAL crap IMO. And I can think of some other domestic titles that got skipped that are just way cooler, like Soldier Blade, Cadash, Dungeon Explorer 2, and Exile. And they don't really mention the great CD games either....only CD game on that list is Y's. To be fair however, the only ones I'd REALLY strike are Legendary Axe and maybe Ninja Spirit. But there are a lot of great releases for that system...I wonder why they picked exactly what they did....

Not bad, but where's Exile or Exile: Wicked Phenomenon? Either is a better action/RPG than Neutopia. And how about Cosmic Fantasy 2? It's dated, but still fun. It seems like GI just picked out a bunch of well-known titles for the system instead of wading through some of the more obscure stuff.
Yeah, I don't understand why everyone digs the original Legendary Axe. It's the sort of game that impressed back in 1989, only to age quickly, so that it's now tedious and uninteresting. I'd have gone with Valis III or the Legendary Axe II (which isn't a true sequel to the first LA) instead. I'd also put Soldier Blade on the list somewhere, but that's just me.
But Ninja Spirit must stay. This, I command.

I think they should've made two seperate lists for hucards and CD's. Either that, or expand the list to a top twenty. The only CD games on the list are Y's I & II, and Gate of Thunder (which also contains Bonk's Adventure, Bonk's Revenge, and Bomberman). I find this list to be quite weak, not to mention very shallow.
Just my thoughts.

baahh how can Y's be number one when its impossible to get past that final boss in part 1, the guy on the tiles flying thru space? that has to be one of my most bitter gaming experiences, slugging all the way thru an RPG only to get stuck on an action part like that.
meekly asking if anybody knows how to get past him, i'd even take a cheat code to get me to the next part.

Dark Fact is a pushover. Just make sure you have equipped all of the Silver items (sword, shield, etc) and strike him while he's moving around. Then again, i did level up for hours at the beginning of the game, so prehaps I had it a bit easier ;)
edit: oh, the listing seems to be made by some dude who played a handful of games and suddenly became and "expert" on the system. Do many really prefer Alien Crush over Devil's Crush? :o Legendary Axe was an OK game...when I first played it like 10 years ago. Now its remarkably average (if even that). I don't know how Super Star Soldier or Lords of Thunder were overlooked. Then again, there were only 10 spots to be filled, so the lister prehaps wanted to create a cross section of various genres and not be too lop sided in a particular category.

yeah i had all the silver items and was very leveled up, its just that board ran out of squares to stand on...perhaps i should take another crack at him when i'm feeling very coordinated, still though a cheat code would be good :)

hope T&T doesn't bastardize the classics.
This is something I guarantee you'll never have to worry about. The bulk of the staff of T&T are "old school" gamers, former fanzine editors, and retro fanatics. Unless the senior editorial staff gets sacked, you won't see them make the mistakes GI makes.

Man why does everyone hate Legendary Axe? Its one of the main reasons Im thinking if buying a Turbografx. But then again I dont see why people like Splatterhouse.

Legendary axe, was good in it's time but now it feels sluggish and the slowdown/slow speed hurts it. If I were you, i'd make sure I had import
Hu-Card support, as thier is a much larger library with import over domestic

Well, most of the GI guys are in bands, so maybe they were just partying too hard before deadline.
My only beef is Alien Crush. Where the heck is Devil's Crush? Everyone with working eyeballs knows it's a far better game. Alien Crush was boring when it was new. Forget about it now.
And I'm one of those who digs Legendary Axe. Maybe it's just nostalgia - ir reminds me of VG&CE, which named it "game of the year."

Because Splatterhouse is fun. :D
Eh, I don't mind LA at all, but I do like LA2 better. NEC should have kept it as Ankoku Densetsu rather than trying to pass it off as the sequel to LA, though...

Ninja Spirit is a great game. I like it when you can leap around the screen like a flea all day.
Legendary Axe gets pretty mundane near the end, but the last boss was neon neat, and I still consider it one of those things you have to experience to get a well-rounded taste of the TG16. This is 1989, year of the B-average game, or so VG&CE put it.
Splatterhouse had a great concept but was terribly dull in execution imo. Back and forth in a straight line, control was horrible.

Man, GI is so freakin' average now. That magazine used to be the best before they switched to the new (big) format and changed the whole style of the mag.
But they actually do prefer Alien Crush to Devils Crush. Something about playability, control, or ball physics... I read it in the mag a long time ago. Maybe their review of Pinball of The Dead will shed some light on their opinion... if anyone's got old GIs.

answere honestly, have you beaten The Legendary Axe?
I would have put a few other choices like
Silent Debuggers and bonks revenge or maybe even china warrior.
Im pretty sure none of the GI staff actually sat thier and beat any of the above mentioned games.
And the sad shit is, they prolly used an emulator to actually look up 10 tg16 games to vote on or looked back at some older video game mags .

Hey is Namco serious about making a new Splatterhouse and who owns the rights to Legendary Axe?

My only real gripe would also have to be Alien Crush. This game sucks big time. The screen flipping thing drives me insane. Devil's Crush is one of the best games for the system, hands down. I'm suprised they didn't have Keith Courage in there. That would have been a hoot!

Definitely Devil's Crush over Alien Crush. And where the heck is JJ & Jeff? Now that game was a hoot! I also seem to remember digging Dungeon Explorer, although I cannot remember why.
Military Madness would be my vote for #1 though.
