Bob Ross Inc. announced on Friday that the painting-made-simple guru would soon be immortalized in his very own video game. Sounds like perfect April Fool's fodder, right? Wrong. The untitled Bob Ross video game is being planned for the Nintendo Revolution, DS, and PC. The game has been licensed to developer AGFRAG who is currently searching for a publisher.
AGFRAG's Joseph Hatcher promised, "The Bob Ross game will utilize the unique inputs that the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Revolution have that can truly immerse the players while they learn to paint like Bob Ross." He added, "I want the community to share with us ... what they’d like to see in the NDS and Revolution games. We want to keep the brush going." Next-gen killer app, anyone?

This is just too damn funny to be true, but it is.

And I shall paint trees. Lots and lots of trees. They will be happy. Lots and lots of happy little trees.
And a happy rock, surrounded by happy little bushes.

I cant wait for the DS's requirement for you to say "lets put a happy little tree here" into the mic everytime you paint a tree.

Bob Ross is immortal. His soft voice and that large afro make it so.
happy little trees......
I am now reminded of the art teacher I had for 3 years in High School. She hated the man and called his art "crap". All us students hated her and her "crappy western art", and we all liked Bob Ross.

i think most art teachers don't like the guy
- in my 2 art classes each teacher dispised the guy. We the students never understood why.
This brings back a memory - one day one of the students was painting like bob ross (using the tools the way he does) and the teacher complimented him on his painting. The kid, with a smirk on his face said he learned how to do it watching bob ross. Holy crap did the teacher go nuts. His face was so red. The class was realy stuned. Everybody knew this teacher to be light hearted and layed back. The kid got a good grade anyways - i thought there would have been fight over the grade. After that the teacher made a threat about not painting like bob ross.

My guess if because he took the elitism out of painting and brings it down to a level where everyday people can understand how it works. In my breif time in and working for an art school, I learned if the facuilty didn't like something, nine times out of ten it had something do pure snobbery.
And Bob Ross game? Oh yeah!!! I loved watching his show as it was just so damn relaxing.

Man this game is going to be awesome... well only if there are happy trees, bushes and you can clean the brushes, I can't believe no one has mentioned that part. I mean they could even make it into a mini game, how fast can you clean the brushes.

Or it could be because he teaches you to paint using formulas. It's the same concept as those "How to Draw..." books. The student learns "This is the way to make a tree", "This is the way to draw manga", which is one thing a really good art class trys to stop you from doing. There's no creativity involved in copying someone elses work or technique. The formula becomes a crutch and pretty soon the student is too scared to paint any other way because they think their own work looks like crap.

True, but I've certainy seen my share of art school products cranking out paintings that look like Roger Dean album covers or photographers with their "edgy" pictures of their own neeners and tah tahs. Lack of creativity exists everywhere.

A long time ago, when Bob Ross was still alive and kicking, he was on the television talk show "Donahue" (yes, this goes way back). He took Phil Donahue and three random audience members to the green room, where they each used a copy of his "Joy of Painting" learner's tools. When they all came out, they showed off the painting they had made.
All of them looked almost exactly the same, and they all closely resembled the skills of Bob Ross.
Not to sound like a broken record here, but this sort of formulaic painting isn't artistic at all. Sure it's a time killer, and when you're done you've created something with your bare hands - and for some less-inclined people, this is fantastic - but for the most part, it's a game of copycat.
That said -
I wouldn't be surprised if a Bob Ross game played more like a cut-and-paste game than actual painting. "Touch here for happy tree". "Draw there for run down log cabin." "Swipe here to smack the devil out of it."
I enjoy Bob Ross for his... "Bob-Ross-isms"... and the artistic quality of his work starts (and ends) with him. But as for a game based on his legacy? It seems more like a ploy by the Joy of Painting markets to get their learning tools in the hands of more people due to slowing sales momentum.
As with all games, I'll believe it when I see it.

...and he's probably netted more recognition and personal wealth to pass on to his family.
I figure this game will be released right in time with PBS' holiday fundraising drive which will certainly add to the price of the game. "Just think, for a $200 pledge, your child can learn to enjoy happy little trees". May be a future rarity :D 8-)
I'd consider buying a copy.....Bob Ross rules.

I remember seeing a comedian impersonating Bob Ross, being his usual self on the Joy of Painting, but then he started having Vietnam flashbacks.... god, it was hilarious.
I'm getting a Revolution for this. No other game will allow me to make as many families of happy pine trees as I want in my little world. I hope they make 12 sequels like they do for every other game.

People, Bob Ross is God.
I loved watching his show as it was just so damn relaxing.
Back in college, one of my housemates and I would watch this show any time we clicked across it. Relaxing, yes, but possibly even hypnotic. We talked about starting a cult based around Bob Ross. Sadly, we never got around to it, or we'd be richer than scientologists.
I own a Bob Ross T-shirt, and I'd be proud to own a Bob Ross game too.
(That said, I understand the arguments about how his methods reduce creativity, but if it gives an ordinary schmuck the ability to paint SOMETHING, I still think that's cool; the art world can still do what it does too).

Sorry to necro such an old thread, but has anyone heard anything about this game? I heard it was cancelled, but at the same time the company making it said that it still might come through. On GameFaqs (ugh) is says that it's still planned for 2009.
