okay me and my brother remember seeing a sears catalog that was selling an advanced vmu in it. The thing was supposed to have a 16 bit processor and all kinds of snazzy features. Since then (which was quite a few years ago) i have not been able to find any information whatsoever about this strange memory unit. If anybody knows anything please help me convince myself that i'm not just crazy.

Was it silver?
It might have been the VMU MP3 player that Sega showed but never released.

You could be talking about the special SEGAGA VMU (Which I've been searching for for ages).
It was black and red (same color as a Megadrive) and actually had the words " 16-bit " on it. I don't know if a VMU has a 16-bit processor in it (wouldn't surprise me); but this particular VMU had it on it because it was made to look like a Genesis.. way cool.
I want one of these SO bad!

I believe the VMU does contain a 16bit processor in it.

Yeah I know.. it's just a regular VMU made to resemble a Genesis.. but it's cool nevertheless. I've seen pictures many times.. but only saw it twice on evilBay in the last 7 years.

Actually, they say "8-BIT" since the CPU in the VMU is 8-bits. They are damned cool. I've wanted one ever since I first saw them, too, but wouldn't you know that they'd turn out to be one of the most uncommon LE VMSs out there. Screw!

I've got a prototype for the VMU MP3 player. Unfortunately they never got around to designing the guts, so it's just an empty display model with a minijack on top...
If you want an interesting dreamcast peripheral, look for a dreamcast zip drive, they were given to developers to play around with, but were never comercially released.

Yup.. that's the box.
HERE'S (http://www.dreamcastgallery.com/dc/gallery.asp?selected_vmu_id=236) the VMU itself. (There are links to four different pics/views at the top of the page.)
Funk Buddy.. you HAVE one of these? I'm jealous. I've only seen two on eBay in 7 years! I could have won one for about $55 five years ago (the last time I saw one). I asked karlkablisk (The guy who joined DP forums recently and said he could get rare stuff from Japan) if he could find me one.. but he's never seen them.
If ANYONE has one for sale.. I'd buy

Oh, that's it? It's just black with a red cap and the "8-BIT" written on it? Heck, the way you guys were talking about it, I was expecting something a bit more impressive than that...

Well, see, the idea is that it's modeled on the Japanese Mega Drive, which used that same color of purple-red and said "16-BIT" in large gold lettering.
http://my.reset.jp/~toragiku/game_ma/mdra1_2.jpg
Personally, I wish that the buttons on the Segagaga VMS were the same blue color os the Mega Drive's reset button, but I think it's a pretty cool item as is. Especially cool if you have a Japanese Mega Drive to go with it.
This was released as part of the promotion for a Dreamcast game called Segagaga that was all about Sega history. They also released a set of paper models people could put together themselves for all of Sega's past consoles including a paper model of a really cool Segagaga Dreamcast that was also modeled on the Mega Drive, but said "128-BIT." I used to have a picture of that, but I don't know where it went. Looked pretty damned cool, I thought.

don't you ever ever went down the path I did.
that's collecting VMU.
It will consume a lot of your time, not to mention your money too to put together all the LE VMU and still there will be one or two elusive LE VMU like ones given out at the contest.
p.s. and then there are matching colour scheme contoller to go with LE VMU but that's another story... :p

Well then.. at least there's hope for the future. 2 months ago? No kiddin.. Is it boxed and does it have the ever elusive "end cap" (I swear those things are like socks to some people)?
dj898.. I don't want to collect VMUs.. I ONLY want this one. Other than that.. All I've got is a stock one and a smoke one.
Which brings up another question? Did they ever make a solid black VMU to go with a Sports Edition or a R7? (That solid black Japanese one on that site is a beauty.)Every "black" one I've ever seen on eBay turned out to be smoke when I asked. Somewhere out there I know there's this "black" one with moire' patterns in it's finish.. but I'm talking about solid flat black.

apparently they did but only for Japan.
Same goes for pink and etc. (And I'm not talking of dc-direct LE versions either)

As far as I know the only real difference is that a certain character was removed. I've read a few differing descriptions of the character, but from what I gather it was a parody of a well-known Japanese anti-alcoholism mascot who was portrayed in a highly intoxicated state. There may have been other changes/bugfixes, but that seems to have been the main alteration.
Like scorch56, I don't really see myself ever trying to collect VMUs, just this Segagaga one would be nice. Actually, I also really like the woodgrain controller/VMU set that was sold through D-Direct for a while. And, wouldn't you know, that design seems to be harder to track down than the other similar ones like marble or that tiny leopard skin print one (which I'm sure I would totally be all over if I was Robin Williams in the The Birdcage).

Well, I didn't say they were rare. I've had a harder time finding them than the other ones is all. And at a price I'm willing to pay, that is.
