My TV does this sometimes

You turn it on, and then it makes the noise when its powering up, then the screen flashes and goes to a wide line in the middle, and it goes onto standby (happens quite quick)

If I wiggle the TV around, and keep trying, it usually works after much frustration.

It does this every now and then, I seem to remember reading it could be a resistor inside thats connecting with something, does anyone have any ideas?

The TV is a Hitachi C24W430N

I found this on a site:

http://www.network54.com/Forum/185128/message/1075565046/

Seems its a common fault / im not the only one, and I think maybe theres something wrong with one of my TV speakers too..

And on another site..

"HITACHI C24W430N I have only owned the television for three years and it is now faulty. It keeps switching to standby mode for no reason. It must do this four or five times in any single hour of viewing. This is very annoying but I can"t afford to get another tv so I live with it. My recommendation to you is not to buy hitachi. "

Another site I found seems to list problems that a repair place had with TV's and one of them sounds interesting but I dont know fully what it means

"C24W430N-311 DEAD DISCONNECT LINE AND DUMMY LOAD,EXTERNAL5V TO R957 TO KEEP PSU ON"

More info, looks like this may be it, though if anyone has any advice before I attempt this feel free to post LOL

"Check R959 (as described by Mark C24W511TN) and found no problem there, however I discovered that several connections in the area of R959 had fractured. They appear to be components near/attached to a heat sink. Re-soldering the joins did the trick"

"Hitachi C24W511TN Int reverts to st/by R959 15k was making int contact with the board (production fault) plamensl 14-09-2004"

"Intermitently goes to standby
One leg of R959 (15K) broke close to resistor, but only just making a connection
(Mark)"

Just got to locate this inside the TV I guess.. man I wish I had a service manual but you need to be registered as a reseller on the Hitachi site to download it!

It's likely a bad solder joint if it works sometimes and not other times (especially if banging it fixes the problem). Just be really careful if you're not familiar with working inside a TV... make sure you discharge the tube properly and also any large capacitors.

Here here! The only time in my life I've been shocked unconscious was working on a TV in high school. I had my face inside it and asked my friend on the other side to plug in the power supply I had next to me and he pluged in the TV instead. BAM, shocked, fell back off my stool, hit the backside of my head on the edge of the adjacent workbench behind me and rolled over onto the floor. :/ I guess hitting my head is what knocked me out but even with that, ohh the pain... :(
