Playstation 3 will be €499 and €599 which is equivalent to $613 to $736 dollars here in the U.S. By the way I posted this in the classic forums since it's already pretty much dead with that price.

Europeans usually pay more for consoles, so I believe the price s will be $499 and $599 in the U.S. as well.

11. I am such a fanboy, that I don't care if it costs a million dollars. I want the ps3 so bad, and all you haters out there can suck a grape. The ps3 will still rule, ms sucks, nincrapdo is for kids, and the ps3 is the best and only system in the world. Plus with blu-ray installed. Blu-ray is the new format, and it's going to be so sharp and crystal clear that it will blow your eyes out their sockets. PS3 forever.

LOL

The other comments prove a point though. I bet 499 and 599 EUR = 499 and 599 USD

This thread should be in modern gaming, the PS3 isn't going to be dead just because it's going to be priced like the 3DO and Neo-Geo were.

As for the take that this news translates to $499.99 in the U.S., I just can't see that happening. At $499.99 they would be taking at the VERY LEAST $250 + loss on each unit sold. Why take a $250 loss on every unit sold, when you only have about 1 million to sell in the U.S. in November and December? There's no need. There isn't going to be PS3's sitting on the shelf anytime soon, even at a much higher price. Sony is going to have the same supply problems that Microsoft did, if not worse, so no need to take such a huge loss right away. My guess is that you can bank on a $599.99 price, unless Sony comes up with some tricky strategy to require a HDD to play games, but not actually include the HDD with the system. The system can only play Blu-Ray dvd's until you attatch the HDD. If that is the case, then they could dip as low as $499.99 and make it up by forcing everybody to buy an expensive HDD add on just to play games. I'm guessing the HD would be $149.99 in that case. So it would really be like $650.00 for a PS3.

Still, I'm thinking a smaller HDD will be packed in with the system, and it will be $599.99 with one sku.

Nothing says 'classic gaming' to me like the PS3. LOL

In any case, I do think this will be a major blow to the PS3, but not a damning one by any means. A lot of (read: most) PS2 owners aren't exactly the typical 'gamer', and it tends to be picked up by the more casual gamer, or people who just don't care enough to look at the stats or whatever. Those are the sorts of people who aren't going to be as keen to pay that much for a system - ESPECIALLY when the 360 and Rev are cheaper. However, even if Sony sells 10-20% fewer systems, they'll probably still be on top because of the sheer massiveness of their installed 'fanbase'.

Think again :) When PS2 came here the price was about $800 (€650) and it still sold good. PS3 is long awaited so if it cost 400, 500 or 600 people will still buy it. They also plan on a worldwide release so it will sell alot the first month. As with all products, price will drop. I will most likely buy it when its about $450 - $500 (that is, if the pirce will be about the same as the PS2 was at launch and it depends on how much i want it hehe).

Yeah, they didn't sell it at $399 and it went straight out the door at $299. I can totally see how this is related though.

though it's not official it's the prices

I would suspect it will launch in north america at the same price point as the 360

there's no way it will launch at 599 IMO

Ummmm . . . did anyone read the articles?

Apparently not according to GamesIndustry.biz who have heard that when Fornay mentioned a 499 - 599 EURO price point it was a "mistranslation or misunderstanding of the discussion, which was actually focused on the relative value of PS3 as a Bluray Disc player," says SCEE corporate communications director Nick Sharples.

The 499-599 is the realative price of the Blu-Ray player, not the entire console. It appears that both articles are reffering to the same interview with the same guy, only one site chose just to report the quoted price and the other reported the price with the information that such an estimate was a misunderstanding.

Also the joystiq article appears to have been posted first (4/5/06 as opposed to 4/6/06 like the other) which leads me to believe that someone saw the price quoted on joystiq and issued a statement to correct it.

Yes, people did read the articles. The thing you quoted there was announced after the first article.

39,900 yen in Japan. At the time, it was about $375 -- $100 more than people expected. Sorry -- didn't keep up w/ the US release... figured it for roughly the same. Looks like the US got a nice little break. Probably less defects too.

Even at that price, Sony has a good chance of selling a ton of units. It is a cheap Blu-Ray player but as far as gaming is concerned, not my cup of tea.

There had better be some kick ass games on the system to persuade parents into buying one for their children.

Wow, I can't wait for the Rev to come out. I just know The Big N is going to come back in a big way. there are going to have Killer sales this X-mas just for being in the 199-299 range. Course thats just a guess.

I can't wait to see how all of this is going to play out.

Yeah, really, I can't wait to pay an extra $200-$300 for a PS3 because it has the power of Blu-Ray, something I couldn't care less about.

Blu-Ray hasn't even been released yet as far as I know. Isn't there still a standards war going on between it and HD-DVD? Yeah, I'm really going to spend an extra $300 for something that I probably won't even use and on top of it has a chance of being yet another Sony Betamax/UMD disaster.

IMO If a single componant like Blu-Ray is going to effectively double the price of the PS3 it should be an optional add-on.

Looks like I'll have a revolution & xbox 360 duo.

At least until the first major price drop, and I mean MAJOR :(

Hell, I still refuse to buy a 360. $400 is too much for me. Not until I can get a non-core system for at most $300, and even then there'll have to be some sort of must have title.

As for the PS3... well, we still don't know an actual price. But even if it winds up only being $300, there's no way I'd buy first generation Sony hardware.
