Did anyone else see the news article saying that eBay was going to start cancelling auctions that say they will accept cash? I found it a couple of days ago but can't find it again. Was it an April Fool's prank or was it real?
EDIT: Found it.

What a crock o' shite. First off.. if you WERE a scam artist.. I would assume you would almost demand cash as your ONLY payment option (less of a paper trail). Sure.. I've seen some people OFFER cash as a payment auction.. but these were game sellers.. not scam artists.
I guess I can see them stopping ads that ask for "moneygrams"; but eBay has always warned against this. Everytime you pay someone.. as I recall. By stopping cash payments the number of scammers they stop would be negligible to the number of legit people who offer it as an option (Which is why evilBay had no answer to the reporter as to how many scams they stopped so far.).
It's obvious.. they're doing it for one reason.. their brother named "PayPal". Soon they'll take away every option but. I can't WAIT to see the excuse they bring up for money orders.
God.. I hate eBay more and more every day. It's the absolute shits I can't find retro games in my area and have to resort to them 99% of my buys.

No surprise really. When you're the only major online auction site with no real competitor, you can pretty much do whatever you want (e.g. increase fees, change the policies to make it sux0r for the sellers such as the recent "lower auction/buyitnow price but not being partially refunded for the listing fee") and the bitches that are the sellers either have to take it up the ass or leave eBay altogether (some have).
But yeah scorch56 is right, seller who offers cash as a payment option as well as money orders, PayPal etc... = Legitimate; seller who offers cash as the ONLY payment method = Scammer. Common sense.
So obviously, eBay cares less about scammers than they do about PURE GREED (more PayPal fees $$$$$). This wouldn't be so bad if sellers could ask for a PayPal fee surcharge in their pricing, and if PayPal had a good seller/buyer protection program. But unfortunately, it's not the case.
The sooner something like "google auctions" comes along, the better. eBay needs to be whipped into shape.

I think eventually they'll force everyone to go paypal only and will say it's in the name of security.
Bunch of Nazis.

"Payment options that EBay, based in San Jose, Calif., deems acceptable include its own PayPal service, credit cards, debit cards and bank-to-bank electronic payments."
So.... No more checks/MOs either? This is the real story. Honestly, I could care less about cash, because 1 out of every 200 of my customers pay that way, but disallowing checks/MOs would cripple the buying power of many potential buyers.
Of course, in practical terms, ebay can really only regulate what is said on their site. I use an automated invoice system off-ebay and if this goes into effect, I'm still going to mention I accept cash/checks/MOs.
Like scorch said, this has nothing to do with security. They just want a new excuse to get closer to their dream of having Paypal be the only method of payment.

Another irony here. We ALL know how "secure" PayPal is.. yeah right. Secure for who? Always the "other" guy. I mean.. take me for example; 95% of my 600+ positives are from me as a buyer (I don't sell much). Having said that.. I have a total of THREE negs in 7 years.. ALL from sellers. I've never been negged AS a seller; and the three negs I have as a buyer are NOT from ever being a NPB. Now I've actually been lucky and only lost money on eBay about half a dozen times in that time. Every time to a seller who either sold me damaged goods that didn't work as described.. or simply skipped out altogether with my money, and never delivered. My worst was only $95 to the tune of a White Japanese Saturn that never worked but was supposed to. AND.. out of those times.. HOW many times do you think PayPal backed my ass? ZERO! And how many dollars have I ever recovered through PayPal? ZILCH!
Now I'm NOT criticisizing those who are mainly sellers here either because I'm sure THEY have just as many bad transactions from their buyers and I.. as a very occassional seller HAVE dealt with NPBs as well. Sure eVBay has given me back listing fees but I'm betting just as many sellers have been screwed by PayPal in SOME way or another.
So my point is.. after eVBay declares paper money of any form.. be it a MO even.. to be "unsanctioned" and you're left with nothing BUT PayPal; how much do you expect to have your ass covered by PeePee when things go wrong? No more than they have for you in the past. Of course.. let's not forget those fees we all pay in SOME way or another to do business through PeePal. Uhm.. we'll just call it a "stipend" you pay for all that wonderfully secure "vapo-insurance".
Things that make you go hmmm.....
Buyer protection? Seller protection? The WHOLE thing's a joke.

Dont know about seller protection, but the so-called buyer "protection" is a fucking joke. I recently bought 4 GBA games on Ebay, payed with Paypal, waited for the games, recived nothing. I check the sellers feedback and i see the negatives from other buyers are pouring in. I then decided to fill a complaint with Paypal (after 3-4 weeks). I waited 10 days and i got this reply from Paypal:
We have decided in your favor, however, we were unable to recover any funds from the seller's account. As stated in the PayPal User Agreement, recovery of funds associated with a Buyer Complaint cannot be guaranteed.
So since the seller had emptied his/hers Paypal account (obviously), Paypal wont give a shit back in refund. I lost over 100 US dollars. So where in the world is the buyer protection??
Its so easy to scam with Paypal. All you need to do is to open an account, sell alot, recive money, empty the account and run away. Will Paypal give any refund to the buyers? Nope. So i dont understand why they talk so much about protection and safety.

Pay with a credit card through Paypal every time no matter what. When a seller doesn't ship the item or ships a bogus item, file a complaint with your credit card company. You'll get the money back then.

I recently purchased an item for a decent amount of money and wanted to do this but learned something new. You can't pay for something via PayPal with a credit card if you have enough funds in your PayPal account to cover the purchase.
I purchased a new softball bat for the upcoming season and wanted to pay with a credit card because I knew I'd get better protection from my credit card company than I would from PayPal . Paypay wouldn't allow it unless I emptied my account first which I don't want to do because my PayPal account is kind of a spending money account for me and I don't want to mix it in with my normal day to day checking account.
I ended up paying for the item with my PayPal balance and will keep my fingers crossed until the bat arrives.

Funky. We'll see if this ever actually impacts my pick-up-only auctions with the "cash only upon pick-up" disclaimers.

Yeah, that happened to me too one time so I emptied my paypal account in order to use your credit card. It's a pain, but you could empty your account, pay via CC, and then re-load your account with the same money from your base account.
