"Square Enix announced the company is working on a Xbox 360 exclusive sci-fi space shooter tentatively named Project Sylph, the game is being developed by GameArts. More details will be revealed at E3 2006."

WTF!?! Silpheed is getting yet ANOTHER iteration and we still can't get a new ThunderForce or "INSERT ANY FORGOTTEN CLASSIC SHMUP HERE." At least we can hope that some of the people involved with Einhander may have a "hand" in this. ;) Couldn't resist.

Don't get me wrong. ANY shmup activity is always welcome with me, but another Silpheed? I enjoyed the original, Sega CD, and even the underrated PS2 version, but it is kind of ridiculous. It may at least look pretty cool on the 360 though. Game Arts continues to milk their past glory and the likes of Compile and TecnoSoft either don't exist or are lost in the world of Majhong and Pachinko. x_x

It's supposed to be an FPS. Not a sequel to Silpheed.

ThunderForce was developed by TechnoSoft, not GameArts. There was to be a ThunderForce VI released for the Dreamcast (there is a video teaser to prove it) but the company went under and it's employees dispersed. TechnoSoft is long gone.

Read above for TechnoSoft. As for Compile, they no longer make shooters, and ceased making the Puyo Puyo franchise, which is why Sonic Team now develops Puyo Puyo Fever. Some staff from compile left because the company did not want to develop shooters anymore. These employees formed the company called MileStone, who have so far developed Chaos Field and Radirgy for the NAOMI. Chaos Field is currently available for the Dreamcast, GameCube and Playstation 2 in Japan, as well as a North American GameCube release. Radirgy is currently available for the Dreamcast in Japan, with releases coming to the GameCube and Playstation 2 shortly.

I don't see anything here that blatantly confirms any connection to Silpheed whatsoever. This looks to be a new property (and an excellent one at that). And even if there was, I liked Silpheed anyway.

blah blah blah... wait till the fricking thing ships before you condemn it for good. You might want to play it first too.

I am getting tired of the "Why is <company x> making <game y> for <console z>" bull crap of late.

They are all making the games because they believe they have something creative to contribute to the gaming world.

You never know, it might even be an enjoyable game. It couls suck too, of course.

Plus, FFXI is already being readied for the 360. That is the start of support for the 360. Another game for the 360 shows more support from Square-Enix -- which is only a good thing, no matter what genre.

Flaming is not necessary. This is not a pissing contest. I know very well who developed and released what when it comes to shoot 'em ups, or games in general for that matter. It was a general statement meant to reference the wealth of past shmup developers who have either chosen or been forced of late to take a seedier path to survive. No need for history lessons.

Game Arts does indeed milk past glories, though maybe not as intensely as I implied. They are nowhere near the level of a company like Capcom, but it is a bit ridiculous that there already are multiple remakes of a mediocre title like Silpheed. Same goes for Lunar. The first 2 games on the Sega CD were magnificent. The 32-bit remakes were also excellent, but The GBA port/remake of the original Silver Star and the abysmal Lunar: Dragon Song weren't really necessary. A tangent from my original intention for the discussion really.

As for Project Sylph, maybe I shouldn't have shared without first doing more research. I assumed that involvement of Game Arts + the fact that "Sylph" is very similar to "Silpheed" meant that it was at least related. It may still be in one way or another. The words "sci-fi space shooter" in the news post pointed in that direction as well. The "y" should have thrown me I guess.

I guess a hint of sarcasm was lost on everyone. I didn't comdemn anything. I am not going to explain any further as my original post is above and everything looks relatively fine to me. Maybe I just used to many CAPITAL LETTERS. I can hang with that. My grammar could have been much better too.

Talk about shooting the messenger.

Well you'd have to be pretty damn dense to not make the connection between Game Arts making a new sci-fi space shooter code named Project Sylph and Silpheed. I'd say it's obvious that it's gonna be another version of Silpheed. But it sounds like this time it's finally gonna be one of those 360 degree free roaming shooters, like Shadow Squadron AKA Stellar Assault instead of an FPS. That would make alot more sense. The series has always been 2D on a 3D background, so it would be cool to see it finally go full 3D.

Uhh... Where was I flaming?

As for me providing further information on TechnoSoft and Compile, you clearly said: "...Compile and TecnoSoft either don't exist or are lost in the world of Majhong and Pachinko."

This statement was questioning the current status of both companies. By saying this you leave an opening for someone to clarrify what happened with these companies.

I am sorry if you found it insulting that I decided to talk about TecnoSoft and Compile's history. You should calm down. It's not worth the stress. There is no reason to get defensive because someone provides further information on a topical subject. If you feel that everyone who does this is trying to give you a "history lesson" then you must have a really tough time posting on message boards.
