What is the point of the Rev "shell controller"?

Is there anything that the "remote control" has that really needs to be integrated into a "shell"?

The only thing I can see it reusing would be the remote's transmitter. That's it.

In other words, the shell will have to have it's own:

1. Casing
2. Buttons, triggers, sticks, pads.
3. PCB for the aforementioned parts

After you've gone through all of the trouble and designing and producing such a thing, does it really make sense to design a special slot to incorporate the remote? Why not just go the extra millimeter and make the "shell" a standalone controller?


In fact, if Nintendo were really smart (it's questionable), they would incorporate yet another flashback to the past with the system and ship it with all three controllers:

--Remote
--nunchuck
--gamepad

The only thing I can think of is the motion sensing aspect of it.

While I agree with you, I think that the whole sensing mechanism as well as the 2.4GHz transmitter are probably pretty expensive compared to everything else, so that might be why they'd use a shell instead of a whole spearate controller with those included. Perhaps also to avoid people looking at the remote and saying, "why the hell do I need this? Fucking Nintendo."

I do expect that there will be controllers that incorporate everything into one with out needing the remote slotted in, I just hope that since they're likely to be third party that they're of a usable quality. Hell, I hope that the shell is usable. That one that somebody mocked up that looks simialr to the Gamecube controller, but with the Revolution remote sticking up out of it, wouldn't actually work, it would have to wider than that at the least.
