Really close.... I'm really close to buying an NES again (after some odd 15 years of giving it away) In fact today I found 7 NES games in the wild for really cheap, and picked them up... giving myself the option of buying a system or returning the games next weekend for a full refund.
I not too long ago bought a Genesis and SNES, and already amassed a giant library for those systems... I told myself I wouldn't get an NES but these days I'm seriously pondering the option.
On the pro side: Gives me more games to buy/hunt for. More nostalgic memories. System has some great games. And great games I have yet to discover/play.
On the bad side: Gives me more games to buy/hunt for. Takes up more space. My to-play pile is large enough as it is. Do I really need to get myself into this mess? Wasting more money.
Any takes?

My style of collecting is to only pick up the super cheap. It's hard to go broke when your price cap per game is $2, or just be picky, only buy games you really want or are really good deals. I think any way to grow the amount of choices you have is good. I have 7 systems and only a few games for most of them, but if I want a game I don't want to have to worry if I have the system to play it or not.

BTW here were the 7 games I got, for $21
Trojan
Strider
Castlevania II
Legend of Kage (I remember seeing this cover as a young child, lol, the weird-looking Japanese-y cover)
Dragon Spirit (super early Panzer Dragoon? lol)
Clash at Demon Head
Milon's Secret Castle

If you enjoy the NES, and it doesn't get in the way of paying your bills then go for it. Life is to short to deny yourself simple pleasures.

Sell the SNES focus on the NES at least thats what I'd do. I always have and always will have a soft spot for the NES so maybe my advise isn't the best.
I would say that if there are a number of games that you want to play for a system just pick those up and not worry about the other ones. I am collecting NES but only the ones that I remember playing when I was younger or that I always wanted to play. This helps to keep the numbers down alot. It can also cut WAY back on the number of rare ones you need to buy. How many of us have found memories of Bubble Bath Babes???

Hey if your gonna enjoy collecting and playing NES go for it. I just put up more shelves if I run out of room for games (which reminds me I need more shelves soon).
NES games only start taking up room once your collection starts hitting in the 100's anyway.

I'd say go for it. The NES is easily one of the greatest consoles of all time, and You've already got some excellent games there, especially Castlevania 2 & Clash at Demonhead. You're missing out on far too many great games by not owning one.

If you want to collect for the NES and actually want to play/enjoy some of the games you buy, simply make a list of wanted NES titles and stick to it. If it’s not on the list don’t buy it. I’ve done that with my SNES collection. For the most part I don’t collect titles that I’m not interested in playing. I have broken this rule a few times but for the most part my SNES collection is around 40 titles and that’s all I want.
My NES collection is a little out of control. I have way too many games for it (130) and I only really like playing 30-40 of them. Most of the others I simply have to collect and it really serves no purpose other than taking up shelf space. I know, my 130 titles is tiny compared to the heavy NES collectors but it’s 130 games for crying out loud, that’s quite a few in my opinion.
Make a “wanted” list and stick to it, that’s my suggestion.
The NES is a fantastic gaming console with some of the best classics ever. I would go for it.

Thanks guys, I will buy one. Last question, I hear a Top Loader/3rd party system is what I should buy, because games boot up on 1st try and the system will last forever, with no blowing required.
Is this true? Does anyone have a picture of this top loader or 3rd party system?

The ideal console is the Nintendo top loader, but you can clean a toaster NES to work pretty well.
I would rather replace the pin connector on the toaster than use a third party console. Those NES-on-a-chip deals are still not perfect.

I say get the original as well. They may be big and bulky with a few problems (such as blowing to work) but they are freaking awesome. In addition they have everything the games were designed for. I've said it before that I have games that work 100% fine on my NES but are glitched to hell on my friends 3rd party top loader. So if you decide to get a top loader go with the version 2 NES. Those are hot!

Is this the good kind of top loader? it will play US NES games right? And the Game Genie too? How reliable is this system? Thanks

'Tis how I started out with my NES collection. I went after my wanted games, and picked up cheapos along the way. I'm currently only after 2 more wanted games, then my NES collection is pretty much "complete"

That's a pirate Famiclone, you lose support for some of the more advanced games and don't have 100% accuracy since it uses a NoaC (NES on a Chip). With the poor resolution of the official toploaders and how tightly they grip the cartridges, just go for a normal toaster NES, remove and clean the ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) connector and you'll be fine.
As for the NES, go for it. I have 243 NES carts (that number fluxuates as I remove dupes, but slowly grows) very few duplicates. For the most part they are loose cartridges but I like loose NES carts, a bookshelf full of them is nice looking. I store my boxes separately and all the booklets / internal catalogs separately as well. So even if I have a complete game (the exception being irregular boxed games like Where In Time Is Carmen Sandiego? - those are kept complete) the cart goes loose on the shelves, the box with the boxes and the booklet with the booklets.
Keep your system and cartridge connectors clean and you'll have no problems. Putting games in plastic bags is a little drastic if you ask me (MANY threads about that around). I have my original NES that I got in 1986, never replaced the ZIF connector, and it still works fine simply because I keep it clean. I store all my NES carts loose with no dust sleeves or covering and they all work fine first try. (the backs are up against the back of the bookcase so dust isn't going to pile up in there anyway)

I'd advise you to get the toaster as well. It has the best outputs that you’ll find on a stock NES system. The top load only offers crummy RF.

Sorry buddy, I just assumed you knew. It's a bad nickname for the original NES.

Wow, come back from vacation and here's this again. New topic, same discussion.
Don't sell the SNES for the NES. That's just stupid.

Legend of Kage (I remember seeing this cover as a young child, lol, the weird-looking Japanese-y cover)
This game is really cool. You sprint through the forest taking down ninjas from the trees. I remember my brother buying it at Blockbuster Video a long time ago, and we were pretty suprised by it. Fun game. I need to pick this game up again.

Fun fact: The Japanese game titled "Kage" (in English) on the front is Shadow of the Ninja; LoK is known as Kage no Densetsu (written in Japanese). Anyway, the game's quite fun, but the sequel adds in a bunch of new elements. Still tough as nails.
Also, one thing that bugs me a bit - the original arcade game (back to LoK now) especially is a crapshoot. I haven't been able to figure out a way to consistently dodge enemies when plowing ahead full speed. Awesome character graphics for 1984, by the way.

OMG GET TEH NES!!1 :)
It is probably my favorite system. I wouldn't worry about the backlog too much, many NES games are pick up and play and don't necessarily require alot of time. I say go for the toaster IF you don't mind cleaning it and cleaning your games well. I've never had a toploader, but my regular toaster NES works just fine after I cleaned it. They're cheaper too. The best games can be had for very cheap.

Yeah get one for sure,if you can get your hands on a toploader then that would be great.A toaster will do also corse, alot of NES games you can pick up cheap if your gonna collect cart only.
Most of them are doable only the rarer ones are a pain in the ass to get for a reasonable price, other than that superb console to collect for.GO FOR IT! :D

Don't sell the SNES for the NES.
Of course not. Not anywhere in this thread did I suggest I'd get rid of the SNES and buy an NES.
I've bought one. The toaster. This is my last system... I have a NES/SNES/GEN/GBA SP/SAT/DC.... that's all I'll ever need.

That was mostly aimed at the goofball who suggested it :) Didn't think you were going to.

Isn't the Toaster NES really easily maintainable if you clean your carts with Isoprophyl alcohol and the connectors with canned air? I think it's because a lot of people don't do that which is why there are a lot of complaints about the Toaster NES being unreliable.
