I Know how much everyone hates these topics lately but hopefully pictures will ease annoyance. Anyway, Uncharted Waters marks the completeion of my Genesis RPG collection. Woo! That's thirty one titles released in the US.
I couldn't say how long this collection has taken me, I've always been very much in Genesis Roleplaying since I was a kid, and some of these carts are still kicking around from that time, if I haven't replaced them for condition that is.
And the first person to pipe up with some obscure game I've never heard of gets smacked around. :P
Anyway, duh-duh-da-duh! The unveiling!
~~~~~~~ woooosh ~~~~~~~
http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/9320/genny1vf.jpg
Couple little fun facts:
* The only game without box, or manual is Phantasy Star IV. Although I'm in negotiations for a complete copy now.
* The only other game without it's maps or inserts is Warsong. Damn poster.
* EA released the same cartridges in the UK as in the US. So while my Buck Rogers says "Mega Drive" on the box, the cart's labled "Genesis"
* I own two copies of Super Hydlide, one NTSC the other PAL. I prefer the PAL box.
* Light Crusader is still sealed.
* I bought Beyond Oasis sealed, but then I set him free.
* The rarest games in the set are Warsong, and Crusader of Centy.
* Master of Monsters is Not an RPG. Oh well.
* My favorite Genesis RPG is still Shining Force.
Adventure game sounds right.
Cool collection (your complete shining force II makes me jealous) but...
And the first person to pipe up with some obscure game I've never heard of gets smacked around.
Where's Dungeons and Dragons warriors of the Eternal Sun?
Where's Might & Magic: Gates to Another World? Battle Master? Star trek: Generations Lost? Techno Clash?
This is a great topic to show people that the Genesis has many RPGs!
Is Warsong any good for a Strategy RPG? I love Strategy games like Dark Wizard, so the game is any good? Any good Action RPGs like Beyond Osais in the pack?
What's the game called right above Faery Tale? I love that box art... what is the gameplay like? For some reason it reminds me of the box art to the old horror movie PUMPKINHEAD (am I the only one who sees that....)
Awesome pic. Nice collection. 8-)
Not bad at all. I saw Shining Force II at the store yesterday cart only, $25.95. I was thinking that's nuts. I can only match up with a few games in there, like Phantasy Star II & III and Wonder Boy boxed/complete. Very nice.
I hope they get videogamecollectors back up sooner than later so we can begin leaving comments and continue updating through there. :)
I loved Rings of Power.. mmm "Naughty Dog".
Technoclash is awesome.. but I don't think it qualifies as an RPG.. it's a genre "pooch".
Congratulations though.. that's a fine set. I'd never have played an RPG if it wasn't for PS IV.
I really wish there was something like a NEW game in the Phantasy Star universe. Never got into that Dreamcast stuff..
Keep the Shadowforce.. it'll be worth something much more someday, and pick up the SNES game.. totally different.
But yeah.. have to agree the STNG title definitely qualifies as a RPG.
Something about PS II.. Every damn dealer on eB calls it complete when it's with the manual & map.. yet EVERY case I've EVER seen says right on the front "Includes hint book". I have the hint book.. yes.. wasn't it included with evry US copy of PS II sold? If so.. how was it packaged because it won't fit in the case (although it's almost big enough L & W-wise)? Was it shrink-wrapped with it on the outside of the case? I've always wondered.
The one above Faery Tale I believe is the "Buck Rogers" Steven (It does have cool artwork on the cover.. BTW.. looks like the cover to old Edgar Rice Burroughs paper backs). Pumpkinhead is a classic (#2 totally sucked though). Only movie ever that really scared that crap outta' me.. totally creepy.. "Black Water Hattie" stuff. Lance Henriksen is always cool in everything he does.. skinny bad ass dude. Rent "Near Dark" sometime.. best unknown vampire flick ever.
The hintbook was placed behind the clamshell and they were shrinkwrapped together. Sword of Vermilion was the same way. When PSII was rereleased, it had the same case, but no hintbook.
Yeah, that's Buck Rogers. (blech).
I'm still working on the hint books. They made a few of the mini sized ones for various games. Right now the only one I have is Sword of Vermillion. Not sure how they were supposed to be packaged, but I can tell you the one for Vermillion doesn't fit in the box either even though it too is advertised on the box.
Scorch: Think you mean Shadowrun. Yeah definately a great game. I like it better than the SNES one, although they're both good. But I may just have a soft spot for the series because I've been playing the original pen and paper game since I was a kid.
Melf: Thanks for the tips. I'll have to check out the Star Trek game. Oh and... *smacks you* (:
Fighter17: Warsong's an awesome Strategy game. Definately a game you should check out if you liked Dark Wizard.
And yeah the game above The Faery Tale Adventure is Buck Rogers. It's the PAL box art although I doubt there's little difference between it and the US one.
Nice collection, what are you going after now?
Currently finishing up PSX RPGs, one title to go. Unfortunately it's Suikoden II. Bleh.
After that though, probably Sega CD and Saturn RPG. Shouldn't be too difficult. While both systems are pricey, they also have really small libraries.
When working on the Sega CD, you know you must get Dark Wizard. ;) I spend over 10 hours on that game and I'm not even 50% done with it.
Well I own two copies of Light Crusader. So until I dispose of the first I don't see any reason to open the second. I'm not in the habit of collecting cellophane. But I do like the fact that the cardboard's minty fresh.
As for Rings of Power... I've had the same issues with it. Old EA computer ports can be really... unappealing.
I like the fact that you can find the games in very good condition (sometimes) because of the plastic box.
Question though: Do you have Star Trek the next generation Echoes from the past ? That plays like a role plyer to me.
Nope. Someone in this thread already mentioned it. I have to check it out. Thankfully that's what Roms are for. (:
I hope you're not making this judgment based on the SNES version. The Sega CD game is actually pretty darn good and has a Yuzo Koshiro soundtrack to boot.
As for your question about Sega CD RPGs:
Every domestic RPG released for the Genesis and Sega CD (http://sega-16.com/Genre%20Spotlight-%20RPG%20Round%20Up.htm)
Just about every Mega Drive & Mega CD RPG (http://sega-16.com/Left%20in%20Japan-%20RPGs.htm)
:D
Umm... just tried it out. What makes Battlemaster an RPG anyway? Seems more a strange combonation between an RTS and an arcade shooter.
That said Arcus Odyssey and TechnoClash seem fairly questionable as well.
Definately missing Might & Magic and Star Trek though. Actually the Star Trek game looks like it might be a lot of fun once I figure how to play it properly.
Battlemaster is a great game. It's a bit more of an action game than a true RPG, but I would say that it qualifies, and more so than Arcus Odyssey does. That one is definitely just an action game, like Gauntlet, Gain Ground, or Soldiers of Fortune, but it's still very cool, as well as the others are.
Very interesting that you have Master of Monsters in there though. That's just a fantasy wargame, not really an RPG. So if you're counting that one, then I would definitely count Battlemaster. It's more of a fantasy wargame too, but it has more RPG elements to it than Master of Monsters does.
On topic, great collection Daria. I've seen your collection before and thought it looked great. I think you have the right idea trying to get the RPG's out of the way first.
My collection always wanders around aimlessly, I need to focus on RPG's.
I don't count Master of Monsters. But I cross posted this thread and well, it's a personal favorite with another member of another forum. Bit of an in joke.
DrWily: Heh thanks. But I'm not simply getting the RPGs out of the way, they are the collection. Although I do play other genres (point and clicks and survival horror games are my favorites) I don't feel the need to own them all.
I guess that is was I was trying to say. I mean, I collect everything for every system.......but all I play (for any amount of time) is RPG's.
I should try and collect RPG's only for a while and see how it turns out.
Nothing wrong with that. :)
Although it's nice to see people collect everything possible it's not realistic to everyone, of course. Sometimes it's just having the sweet games that feel just right with that you need.
Like I've said before, I wouldn't mind finding a few of those titles I'm missing and have been looking for. It's a great selection and worth playing for Genesis fans, or RPGers alike.
Daria
04-13-2006, 07:29 PM
Yeah Genesis definately has a great library. Sure the EA releases can get a bit strange, but there are very few outright terrible RPGs.
My favorites include: Shining Force, Shadowrun, Pirates!, Shining Force II, LandStalker, Warsong, New Horizons, & Shining in the Darkness (which happens to be one of the only dungeon crawlers I can stomach).
The turds would have to be Fatal Labyrinth, Super Hydlide (great boxart though), & King's Bounty.
While none of the Revolution releases can really be considered the best of the crop, they're all at least enjoyable games. I love Traysia and Exile.
Master of Monsters has always been my personal favorite Genesis game as well. I spent way more hours playing that one than any other game, back in the day. At one time I even owned two copies, one for personal battles and one for multiplayer battles, since it only had one slot for saves.
drwily008: Thanks! :)
Lol, I think I'm the only one in the world that enjoyed Super Hydlide. It was actually a competent little RPG once you get the hang of it. Great soundtrack too. The final boss battle had an awesome twist to it that I'd never seen before, and I actually had to call Sega's help line to beat it!
King's Bounty is shit though. I tried and just couldn't get into it. Plus that 50+ character password was like, WTF?
If you like the Renovation titles, you should really try them on the Turbo Grafx-16 CD. Ys III has shitty scrolling, but the cut scenes and godly soundtrack more than make up for it. Exile is better too, and there's even a sequel, Wicked Phenomenon, that was never released on any other platform.
NIce set Daria! Glad I was able to help you get a few of those :D
Centurion Defender of Rome has some RPG elements(gain experiance to gain a higher rank) but is mostly an old PC strategy port from EA. Not sure if you should add Syndicate or Battletech to the list either.
Battletech is more of an action game, like the Strike series. There aren't any RPG elements involved.
Doesn't El Viento by Renovation qualify as a RPG? It is a side scroller, but you have HP, EXP and MP. New spells are available throughout the game.
As far as Star Trek TNG goes, I am not sure on that one. If you are going to count it, don't forget there was a DS9 game as well. Don't know if that qualifies either.
As for Hint Books, I have Phantasy Star II and Sword of Vermillion. I also have the HTF D&D Warriors of the Eternal Sun Hint Book. It is slightly larger than the cartridge case, unlike the PSII and SOV hint books. Not sure if it came with it. There is also a Phantasy Star III Hint Book. I don't have it and it appears to be normal size, at least judging by the auctions I've seen on ebay. It looks like it was purchased separately. Not sure though.
Does anyone know of any other Hint Books besides those four?
Bighab
Phantasy Star 4 also had a hint book. Not sure if you want to include the shining force battle guide as a hint book. Battletech had a hintbook too.
But the gameplay itself is pure action.
The DS9 game is totally side-scrolling action too. It has some basic puzzle elements, but that's about it. I don't think it qualifies. I think TNG does because of the style of the gameplay. It's very much like an RPG, sans the turn-based battles.
Does anyone know of any other Hint Books besides those four?
The Sonic games also had hint books, as did Ecco: Tides of Time. Not sure which others did.
