View Full Version : Do you own an "exotic" system?

The question is, do you own one of the exotic systems? For example, a system like the FM Towns Marty, or a PC-FX? Here is a list of systems that could qualify for being somewhat "exotic" and "elite"
FM Towns Marty
PC-FX
Pioneer Laseractive
Neo-Geo AES
Neo-Geo CD (semi exotic)
Atari Jaguar CD system (semi exotic)
TurboDuo (semi exotic)
consolized MVS
PC Engine Duo-R
SuperGrafx
Vectrex
JVC X'Eye/Wondermega
PC Engine Duo-RX
Those are some of the systems that come to mind when I think of "exotic" or "elite" type systems. I'm sure I'm forgetting some, and you may disagree and think some of those systems not to be exotic or elite whatsoever. All of those systems above cost about $100 each or more, so that's part of the criteria. It's hard for a system to be exotic, if it's cheap. Also, I didn't want to get into the mundane and start doing variations of various systems. I want them to be systems that people have actually heard of. Anyways, if you own one of the exotics, let us know, and tell us a little bit about first acquiring it, and how it feels to own one of the more exotic and coveted game systems.

I'm not really sure if I would classify any of those 3 as exotic per se, but if you had a RGB modded 3DO, then that would definitely be "exotic", considering there is likely less than 100 RGB modded 3DO's in the world.

I indeed have following system as part of my collection and some more...
SuperGrafx

Plus these though not sure they are considered to be exotic?
VirtualBoy - brand new never used
WonderSwan - green Zion Zaku edition
GameBoyLight
and prototype Saturn console, not sure whether this is regarded as exotic or rare???

I guess a US NTSC Amiga CD32 is fairly rare.
(mostly all that pop up are PAL)
and a debug Xbox.

Consolized Neo Geo MVS- I bought a AES from a DP member and it came with a few decent games. Well obviously this fueled my fire and I wanted more. Unfortunately, the deeper I researched it became crystal clear that I was NEVER going to be able to afford some of the better Neo titles (Metal Slug, Bust a Move, Blazing Star, Garou MotW).
Long story short, I sold my AES along with quite a bit of my unused stuff and bought my MVS (My laseractive and complete in box Jaguar was inculded in that sale). Now I am obsessed with this expensive little guy and often spend more $$ on a single cart than I do many of my systems.
Duo R with region mod This unit was a luck issue. I had a great gaming find ($20 investment) and was able to sell it on eBay for over $200. I took the $$, went to DP member D-lite and bought one of his region modded Duo R’s. I wish I could say I’ve used the crap out of it but I haven’t. I have Y’s book I&II as well as Dracula X and have played them from tie to time but other than that it just looks nice sitting there.

...if you own one of the exotics, let us know, and tell us a little bit about first acquiring it, and how it feels to own one of the more exotic and coveted game systems.
Jaguar w/CD - Got this in 1998 when this system was in the limbo period between "obsolete crap" and "omg the r@r3z". I was visiting my in-laws in Nebraska and knew of a pretty sweet game shop in Omaha. I planned on going there to buy an Atari 5200 which I knew they stocked. Sho'nuff they had the 5200, and they also had this Jaguar bundle sitting there: One controller, basic deck and 5 loose games of my pick for $18. Unlike the 5200, this system was after my time, but since I had recently declared myself an Atari fanboy I bought the Jag too as an afterthought, not expecting to get a lot of mileage out of it.
Long story short: I wound up playing more of the Jaguar than the 5200 on that trip, and revisited that game shop 3 more times in as many days to buy more stuff: carts, a 2nd controller and finally the CD drive, which was an extra $35. A great deal, especially given the relative scarcity of this stuff now.
So the Jag with CD was the 1st system I bought into with the intent of collecting for it. I love it very much and enjoy the fact that it’s become more of a niche system to play and collect than other consoles of the same era. I also enjoy the Jag because it’s, IMHO, the last truly American game system. Before you say, “X-Box” I am referring not only to the manufacture of consoles but also to game development. Pretty much all Jaguar game development was done in the USA, unlike X-Box which has plenty of foreign developers. There’s just something to be said for that.
Vectrex – Not much of a story here. I stumbled across one in a shop local to Albuquerque in 2002. It wasn’t the kind of shop one would expect to find a Vectrex in: one of those “Playstation and Nintendo are all the end-all and be-all” types. Anyway, Vectrex was a system I remember very fondly from back in the day and I couldn’t believe these guys had one there, priced at a mere $70. The significant thing about this purchase was that it was the first time I bought a game-related item not using money I generated myself from the hobby but by actually cutting into “our money”, i.e. – Mrs. Pan and me. I felt guilty for 1 second before reminding myself that it was a Vectrex, and this was clearly a case where it would have to be preferable to ask for forgiveness instead of begging for permission.
That summer I bought a Vectrex multi-cart at CGE2002 and that was a good investment. The Vectrex is the system I always pull out when I want to really blow away the mind of kiddies and other visitors to my Room of Doom. I explain that since the system had its own display and runs on 12-volts that makes it a portable. And in 1982 “portable” did not imply anything about being “lightweight” LOL.
So those are my only two “exotics”. Your criteria for “exotic systems” seems a little unclear. Is it just because a system is worth more than $100 to a collector? Relative scarcity? My own criteria for “exotic” systems basically means weird hardware. So I would include the Vectrex, probably scratch the Jag and definitey add the Virtual Boy. Just my two zimnys.

Round here, anything that doesn't have a Playstation or Xbox logo on it is 'exotic'!
Anyhow, I have a PC Engine Duo-R with RGB Scart mod and I've consolized the following arcade systems: MV-2FS NeoGeo MVS, CPS-2 and an IGS Polygame Master.
I've also worked out how to do an Atomiswave and have it looking very nice, just need to get a MoBo now.

Well, I consider the S-Video Modded Atari 2600 that you sold me to be exotic. :)
Oh, it also has 2 ports for speakers, to give that stereo effect.
A Pair of Neo Geo AES, I used to have a trio but that was a little much
And a Neo Geo CD that doesn't get much play.

Well, I've been wanting a Vectrex. Past that, I've never even seen any of those consoles.
I have 2 Neo Geo AES systems and a Turbo Duo from the list. And PCB stuff, if that counts (1 slot, 2 slot, 4 slot with games) CPS 2 and Sega STV but no games, and various individual PCBs like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Vigilante, Final Fight etc. This stuff really isn't rare but relatively speaking since not a whole lot of people in the general population are arcade/PCB collectors I guess it is for our purposes.

An NTSC CD32 is considerably exotic (though not very collected). Rumor has it that less than 10,000 were produced in the US. Luckily, I have one :)
Though I don't have one, how about a Bandai Pippin?
On that list, I have a Jaguar CD, PC Engine Duo, CDTV, CD32.

x68000, of course. *cough*
Neo Geo AES, CD-i (another *cough* for a system that shoulda been included, and my unit is a nifty presentation one with a great, sharp LCD screen and a slick case, the best I've seen on a game unit actually).
Since we're including strange Genesis variations (i.e. wondermega/x'eye), I'll throw out that I've got a Nomad (use it nearly daily), Mega Jet, and my only SMS hardware is a boxed Power Base Converter (but I don't have a Genesis 1, just two 2s and 3s each. I can count Sharp Twin FC and a kiosk Dreamcast unit (different label marking), and maybe you can count my Stratovox cab which is the old fashioned Space Invaders cocktail design :D
I also have some other games worth mentioning but without the systems:
A Mega Tech cartridge (Shadow Dancer)
A nearly-complete Darkstalkers (CPS-2) kit
Daimakaimura for SuperGrafx, a couple FM Towns games, and many others like so.
Oh, and those funky Saturn RAM carts are pretty exotic, if you ask me.

Hmm, by the standards of the thread, my Vectrex counts. I also have a Philips G7400, a Philips VG5000 (obscure European computer), and an A/V Famicom, which is semi-exotic here but pretty common in Japan. Does the Bally Astrocade, Microvision or RCA Studio II count? (My Microvision's screen was still working last time I checked -- that's pretty exotic in of itself.)
If mods count, I have a Saturn with region switch (not really exotic at all), and will very soon have a ColecoVision modded for component video. :-P My G7400 is allegedly modded for composite (I say allegedly because I haven't tested it yet -- need to get a voltage converter).
And I still have the strange white Intellivision (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=45415), although I never found out conclusively what it is.

PC Engine Duo-R - Yes, the Turbo Duo-R, bought off Ebay with 7 games for £100
Neo-Geo AES - Yes, cost me £1000 with Snk Vs Capcom Chaos and Metal Slug 1,2, 3 & X
Neo-Geo CD (semi exotic) - Yes, got one off Ebay for £40, also picked up a CDZ for £100 with 4 games off Ebay
Atari Jaguar CD system (semi exotic) - Yes, bought on launch with Myst
Vectrex - Yes, bought one off Ebay but doesn't work, trying to figure out how to fix up the garbled display
I also have:
Virtual Boy
PC Engine GT (AWESOME handheld)
Sega Saturn White (the one without region lockouts) £200 on japan launch
Panasonic Q - bought on launch day
I-Qube
Acetronic - inherited from my brother when I was little, got about 8 carts for it
Treamcast - Saw it on Lik-Sang and HAD to buy one.
Yaroze PS1 - Bought off Ebay for £300 a few years back
Doctor V64 addon for N64 - Bought just before Bung Enterprises got shut down.
Super Wild Card (Floppy Disk Version) for SNES - Given to me by a stranger I was going to buy it from as a kid, but couldn't afford it, so I offered to pay him £10 a week, and he laughed and said no, and ended up giving me the kit for free with a handful of games. Nice guy indeed
I'm on the hunt for a nice Bandai Playdia console if anyone sees one cheap, apparently there's 1 game that's worth having on it. I'm also looking for a dirt cheap N-Gage Sidetalking version if anyone wants to part with theirs.

I don't know. I guess it's just personal taste. I also consider the original Wondermega one of the nicest looking system combos (right behind the Panasonic Q) and then JVC remodeled it and it just doesn't stand up to the sleeker design of the original. Coupled with the fact of taking away the wireless pads and S-Video for the American market, it makes the X'Eye that much less attarctive to me. Again, just personal taste. When it comes down to it, though, it's just great to have a reliable unit to enjoy both Genesis and Sega CD games on, regardless of which setup anyone has :)
JVC Wondermega 2 would be even cooler!

I think of it more like the original Wondermega is the mommy/daddy and the Wondermega 2/X'Eye as the brother and sister. I could understand stripping the X'Eye of the wireless pads for cost, but why the S-Video ouput? Would it REALLY have made THAT big of a difference?

I wouldn't mind owning an AES, but I know I wouldn't get a good enough price to play ratio on it...and I don't know if I really consider the AES exotic either. I wouldn't mind a Sharp x6800, there seems to be alot of cool titles for that, and it seems like a valid exotified console.

I've got an NTSC CD32 and an X'Eye (which, if you think about it, is not that exotic at all... it's just a Genesis and a Sega CD bundled in a convenient wrapper.) I lose. Big time. I'd still rather have the "crappy" X'Eye than the oversized Genesis/Sega CD coupling with its two big-ass power plugs.

The question is, do you own one of the exotic systems? For example, a system like the FM Towns Marty, or a PC-FX? Here is a list of systems that could qualify for being somewhat "exotic" and "elite"
FM Towns Marty
PC-FX
Pioneer Laseractive
Neo-Geo AES
Neo-Geo CD (semi exotic)
Atari Jaguar CD system (semi exotic)
TurboDuo (semi exotic)

Too many to go into here, but some highlights include the Cassette Vision, Super Cassette Vision, Amstrad GX4000, FM Towns Marty, Tomy Pyuuta Jr., and Casio PV-1000. I myself have FM-NEW7 as when I buying back in late 80s Fujitsu was selling FM-NEW7 instead of FM-7 - though wanted FM-8 but haven't seen one in my price range yet :(

Is there any point to buying an FM-8 other than the coolness factor? I was under the impression that the FM-7 was backwards compatible if you set the dipswitches correctly. I might get one someday (any computer with bubble memory is cool in my book), but I'd rather get an FM-77AV (for the floppy drive and extra capabilities) or a NEW7 for the joystick port. I sort of regret getting the cheap versions of a lot of these computers and then having to upgrade. I had to put an extra meg of memory in my X68000, and now I'm looking for a PC-6601 or at least a PC-6001mk2 to replace my PC-6001.
Oh, I guess another "Exotic" console I have is the Bandai Pippin. Can't find any games for it, though.

I wanted FM-8 for its bubble memory...
dunno but after I read about back in 80s I've been fascinated by it
I also had NEC PC-8801MkIISR or something like that
great system and a lot of (H) titles to choose from :p
sadly I couldn't take it with me when I moved and same story with MSX2+ setup that I gave away :(

I actually had to downgrade my PC-8801. Turns out the later models only used floppy drives and couldn't be interfaced with a tape deck. Since I wanted to play the original Thunder Force, which is on tape, I had to buy an older one that supported an external tape deck.
The coolest thing about bubble memory is that if you read any computer book from the late 70's, they all predict it'll become the standard media of storage. We'd all be using bubble memory instead of hard drives of floppy disks. The only computer I have that actually does use it is a very old GRiD laptop from 81 or 82 (actually the first laptop computer). It still works, but it's rather slow and takes a bit of time for the device to warm up.

How bout the balley asrocade? I have had some people tell me that this is one of the harder to find systems of that ara but i don't really know for sure? If it is then you can count me in as a member of the Exotic club but thats the only one that i would considerexotic from my collection. If not i will have to keep on searching!!!

I hunted down a 10 million model playstation in Japan last month. I think it's quite rare especially since it was factory sealed. It cost me $1000 =( Not sure if that's exotic though. Anyone know if it's region-free?

HA! Bubble Memory - that takes me back!
I own a SuperGrafx and a Jaguar.
No games yet for the SG. I really don't care, though.
I just bought it because it's just a sexy looking little piece of hardware, and a nice conversation piece. :D
Not to mention - SG game prices are astronomical if you can find them.

The rarest i have is a NES top loader, though i plan to buy some of the systems on the list.
I think you should add the Halycon and Adventurevision to the list. The halycon is nearly unheard of..

I've got a Vectrex that I collect for avidly. I love it and like to turn out the lights and see that great vector trail. I've got about 2 dozen games for it and really want to find Pole Position, Clean Sweep, Polar Rescue, and Star Castle for a deal. I want War of the Robots but have never seen it for sale. I tell my friends about it and they have never heard of it. I don't blame them, the Vectrex has always stood the shadow of it contemparies. Its hard to follow Atari and NES.

Which games did you get? I've been trying like mad to find Dragon Slayer for a reasonable price. I'm also trying to hunt down Mappy and Pop 'n Chips.
