That's right. FF3 for the famicom was never rereleased on any other format here in the states or anywhere outside Japan. It is the only one of the original FFs to not do so. Cool that one is finally coming though...

And to add, it's supposed to be a 3D remake - not the simple ports we've seen lately on the GBA. Not that I don't love those ports, I've got them all, but FF3 will hopefully have more elbow grease put into it than the GBA games. Personally, when I heard of a 3D remake of FF3, I got pretty excited hoping it was a remake of FF6J, my all time favorite final fantasy. I'm still pretty excited about this one though :)

Damnit. I wasn't too happy with the game being DS only, and them making it 3D is taking things too far.
I've started buying the GBA ports for the games, and liked what they did, but this... this I won't get. Dammit.

I, too, was disappointed to hear about the 3D update. I'd prefer they just give it the 16-bit treatment like they did with FFI and II in Dawn of Souls.
I'll still be getting this game, but I'm not as happy about it as I could be.

As long as they don't make it easier (like they did with Dawn of Souls), I'll be happy.

I never cared for the game, really...but I've only experienced it via the translation that came out long ago. I was a little interested in possibly checking out the Wonderswan version, but it never came out (the FF4 for WSC was nice, though!)...
who knows, maybe it'll be the exact inverse of Final Fantasy 2 for me (I loved it back when I played the translation but couldn't stomach the gameplay when I tried it again in 2003).

I'm pretty excited about the 3D version.
Although, I've never played the original 8 bit version. I should try the rom sometime.

they made final fantasy ten squared? :D
im VERY excited about the 3d remake, its like an all new FF game for me, since i never played it originally.
i do admit it be nice to see a honest to goodness port, but if its either/or, 3d all the way.

I'd rather it be a straight up port of the original. I think the newer one looks worse than the first one. But then there are always roms if you really want to play the original I guess.

I can't WAIT to see an overhaul update of FF3.
I've already played FF3. I don't want to play it again. I hate all of the GBA RPG ports, because it's just playing the same junk all over again, with maybe some superficial details on top.
If you want to play FF3 portably, download a translated version and put it on a PSP. And if you feel guilty about emulation, write a check to Square and put it in the mail.
I think the graphics in the new version look great. It'll be like playing a whole new game.

I still wonder if the game is actually going to come out. It's been coming to the DS shortly since the system launched.

i'm in the same boat as you Kitsune.....
i think they should give us an official relesease before they give us a new 3-D remake! fuck roms, i want to play it on a console first!

Guess it's time for you and a few other people to get a famicom/nes console copier!
While some games from the time period have aged well and while nostalgia can aid in overlooking flaws in older games, if you haven't played the original 8-bit Final Fantasy games by now, you just missed out (or didn't miss out, depending on how much of a Final Fantasy fan you are).
Bitching about how Square shoulda-coulda-woulda isn't going to change anything, so grab an emulator / GBA Flash Cart / NES console copier / NESreproductions.com / whatever and go play the original if that's what you want. Don't expect Square to rerelease the original unaltered game. Seriously, did you guys complain about the Wonderswan Color versions of Final Fantasy I, II, and IV, too?
On a tangent, is the text in the PS1 remake of Dragon Quest IV stored in some sort of wacky compressed manner or what? Just curious.

Well considering Enix themselves have no clue how to decipher Heartbeat's coding and localize the game I'd imagine that any amatuer translation team would run into similar hiccups.
Edit: As far as the Final Fanatsy 3 remake goes I think it sounds exciting. I'll always prefer a new rendition of an older game then the same old rehashed ports again and again. Maybe it's because I'm anything but a Square nut that I'm not indignantly offended that the original version has officially gone stateside or prehaps I'm just used the fact that the games I really want to play always reside just beyond my reach in the land of the rising sun.
Either case I'm grateful for fan translations and if I'm that hardpressed to play a game on authentic hardware I know I can invest in a copier device or buy reproductions.

Played the translated rom back in the day and loved it. had a great storyline and really set the stage for the later titles.
I'd rather see a port/remake in 16 bit of it, but if they succedd in making it more 3D and it works, more power to them.

(Kind of) Off Topic here, but has anyone heard anything about the FFV and FFVI ports on GBA? I haven't heard anything about them since FFIV was announced. Have they been released in Japan yet? :hmm:

No, they haven't.
If they remake them in 3D, heads are going to roll.

Agreed. 5 & 6 (especially 6) are my favorites in the series. I just simply want ports so that I can play them on my DS on the go. :)
