View Full Version : How much I would get if I sell my modded Saturn?

I'm thinking about selling my Model 2 US Sega Saturn that's modded to play backup games.

The deal with my Saturn is that there's no CD lid because the Saturn was once used for swapping, but later I purchase a mod-chip and the swapping thing wasn't needed anymore. I removed the CD lid so the freaking lid won't interfered when I'm swaping. The system still plays fine, except there's no CD lid. If you want to play a game, just put the CD in, POWER on and it'll load. Also there's no lid for the cartridge slot, but the cartridge slot still works.

Also I must talk about the mod-chip. I installed the mod-chip by tape! I didn't solder it, I just used some black tape and it works just fine. As long as the wires are touching the places that they should, the mod-chip will be able to work. I tape it good so the wires won't move around and such. I did the mod-chip installation around early this year.

I wish I was able to take a photo of my Saturn, but I'm not able to because I don't have anything to take photos with.

If I want to sell it, it'll be this:

* Model 2 Sega Saturn Modded for backup games (No CD lid or cartridge slot lid, but the system and the cartirdge slot works perfectly fine)
* All hookups (Power Cable, AV Cable)
* One controller (Orginal Model 1 US Controller)
* 30-40 Backup games (bonus)

Everything still works, but just missing the CD lid and the cartridge lid. I'm thinking about selling it because I want to purchase a Japanese Saturn. All the games that I want to buy are all Japanese so it's a waste to have a American system that plays burn games (and I don't trust the Action Replays).

If you were looking for a modded Saturn, how much you would offer me? This is not a selling thread, I just want to know your input.

Thanks. ;)

Hey, it's part of the deal, I don't want them. Comes with the deal, what do you think is the price (I know the games doesn't work a dime at all)? ;)

Agreed, saying you'll include "bonus" items lets the knowledgeable people (that are going to be the interested ones anyway) know what you're talking about and keeps it on the up and up. Coming out and saying you have backup games and around how many, and are including them, is a no-no.

I'll be honest about the item and value. First it's going to look bad to the people looking for a system since it doesn't have the lid or cartridge slot door. Honestly it sounds like you did an amatuer mod junkjob and no one is going to want something like that. One knock in shipping or a good push or the natural wear off of the tape and then you have something short out inside.

I would recommend you just install a US/JPN switch into a Saturn for import games (what I do to all the ones I sell) but going on how you "modded" the system you want to sell then I'd say not to bother.

But if you were a buyer, how much you would offer me?

If I was a interested buyer (and I'm not), I'd offer $20 assuming I could salvage the mod chip.

InsaneDavid

Yeah, nothing. I can get a perfect Saturn for $5 and the DPDT switch for $2 and spend 20 minutes to install it for US/JPN mode. Now THAT I can resell for $50.

Your hodgepodge Saturn is worthless in those figures.

I don't get with you people, it's freaked modded, that's is like a extra 20 bucks (but that's what I think). Heck, it comes with the parts so you can put it back together, geez.

Sigh. -_-

If you think this is bad, wait until you go to try to sell it. Theres a HUGE difference between a good looking mod and a shit mod. You wouldn't take your car in to get it suped up and then be satisfied that the mechanic taped everything on and returned your car without the hood. Same thing here. Remove the chip, sell it seperately.

It's not modded so much as nigger rigged (pardon the expression). If there's any value in a modded console is attributed to the fact that the buyer doesn't have to do the modding work (soldering) themselves. However you haven't done the work either. Taping the wires together is a temporary and lazy fix.

You could have said Mickey Moused, and everyone would have gotten what you meant.

Anyway, yeah, the thing is pretty much worthless to a collector. It's broken dude, deal with it.

The whole "DOOD, ULTRA RARE MODDED LIDLESS SATURN" crap might work on ebay, but not here. Saturns don't go for a whole lot to begin with, and a broken one goes for a lot less.

you asked. we answered. deal with it.

"if my answers frighten you, you should cease asking scary questions"

do what someone said, put it back together, and sell the saturn unmoddd with a mod chip, youll be able to get 30-40 for that.... assuming its not fucked up after you put it back together. id much rather pay 35 for a nice saturn with a mod chip that ill have to solder myself than a nigger rigged one for 20 (hehe, i love that expression too).

Anyway, I'm trying to repair the CD lid and the Cartridge lid. So far everything is working well. The reason why I use tap because I don't want to screw up my Saturn by soldering (and yes I own a soldering iron).

Fighter17
04-11-2006, 11:08 PM
Well, I can't fix it. Sigh. :(

Well, I have no choise but to keep it. Any good cartridges that would let me play imports on my American system (and it's not a action replay), and not to metion cheap?

I guess I'm an idiot too, I got mine for $40 a few years ago. :(

Oh well, I love my Saturn and don't mind the money I put into getting one that isn't modded at all. Works great, have a good 20+ games that kick ass, and my new arcade stick blows my mind away.

I'm one of those people that buy things after inspection. I don't buy junk or crap unless there's good plans that go with it on fixing up or it has some other value. The stuff you did to your Saturn is abusive and makes it quite stupid on your part, not the purchase. Maybe you need to study a bit more into the subject of modding and ask some skilled people first before mutilating a nice consule. Maybe you'll be able to find a retard to dump the system on overpriced.

Good luck!

could we get one thing right?

please call it chipped Saturn coz that's what it is - to play CD-R copies...

Saturn console with the region switch as well as 50/60Hz switch only should be called moded Saturn imho

calling chip'd Saturn mod'd Saturn is quite misleading really

p.s. if you chip'd your saturn to play non-legal copies(?) you might as well come clean

What an odd thread, but informative.

Some of the members of this forum seem.....pointed in there observations.....and strongly opinionated in their point of view.

That's probably the nicest way I can put it ;)

But I agree, the topic creator is all kinds of newbie :)

It has nothing to do with that. It's expecting some big return on a POS Saturn with a halfass chip job.

How many boards are you spamming with this, anyway? I was just looking over at shmups and saw you have the exact same post posted there, except you don't say that you got burned games over there.

Why can't you just make a B/S post, pick a price of say $50 OBO, and if it sells, great, if not, lower the price? Wouldn't that be a bit easier than clogging up all the game boards?

I'd personally vote for under $10. Minty Saturns can be had for that, easily. And copy games suck.

Well what did I said at my first post, I want input. Thanks guys.

Anyway, I posted this at the shmup forum and I got a PM from a guy who wants to buy the whole package off of me (that was quick). $50 was his price and I said fine. In the long run I lost money, but hey I have to learn. At least part of the money is going for a Japanese Saturn. 8-)

If you told him the mod job was a tape bit, then that's pretty cool actually. If not... just watch out in case he finds out and gets a case of the ass. Some people on the 'net will go above and beyond the call of duty to make your life hell if they think they got horribly ripped off.

Not that I'm saying it'd be a horrible rip off (the chip just needs to be soldered on really), but you got to watch yourself you know.

He knows about the tape, because he read this post at the shmup forums. When he read it he shot me a PM and offer me $50 for the package. I accept his deal. He was suprise that you can install the mod-chip by tape, but he said as long as it works, I'm fine with it.

you can get more then 20 for it...

My modded saturns fetch anywhere from 70-100 dollars whenever I sell them on one of these forums..

Not having a drive door will look unappealing to some buyers and will drive the price down, say, 20 dollars (ouch)

Id suggest buying a broken one off of ebay for 8 dollars just for the drive door

InsaneDavid

But it's not properly chipped. If you own a soldering iron and were going to sell the Saturn anyway, and you had it open trying to reattach the doors, wouldn't you tack it in real quick and be done with it? Sounds fishy. What, is your soldering iron still in the package? ROFL

I'm a little bit shocked that I'm the only person that finds the above phrase to be horribly offensive. Adding the "pardon the expresssion" part doesn't excuse it either. It's kinda like when Bill Parcells said, "No offense to any Orientals, I mean no offense but, we have these plays that we call "Jap" plays"

Anytime anybody says, please don't be offended by what I'm about to say, or no offense but.... They are just about to offend the hell outta somebody. I'm not a black person, but if I was, I would be extremely offended by that "expression".

I've always known the term to be "Jerry Rigged". Now, I must admit that I have no idea who the hell "Jerry" is, but when you say "Jerry Rigged", people know that it's a hastily put together solution that might not last. No need to bring the N word in there. Especially when you put the 'er' on the end of it.
