This is a thread dedicated to bringing attention to the great work of fan made hacks of classic games. These people put in tons of effort to remake games in their own image to give new life to great games. Some of the best work done recently has been with the classic snes games, Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island.

Golden Yoshi's hack of Yoshi's Island is quite a feat. It features completely new levels and secrets. The levels are even longer than the sprawling original, and getting 100% is a much bigger challenge. This isn't a hardtype hack, though it is certainly not a walk in the park. I have played about halfway through, and I noticed a new type of bullet bill (it follows you around like a homing missile) and a new plant that shoots out bubbles. There are a few glitches in the game, but they do not detract from the gameplay (most noticably graphical glitches with the giant chomp that chases you). Anyone who is as big of a Yoshi's Island fan as I am will get a kick out of this one.

FuSoYa created the Lunar Magic Super Mario World editor several years ago, and it made hacking SMW very easy. Though there are many completed hacks out there, none are more impressive that his own Super Demo World: The Legend Continues. Featuring SMB3 type bricks, and dozens of new enemies and tricks, this shows off the culmination of several years of work. Most levels border on near insane difficulty levels, which will make you hit the savestate key a lot. Even with the hardcore difficulty, it is still a wonderful playthrough to see what can be done with the hacking tools.

I don't have a link for it, but DDCecil totally revamped Super Mario World. I am buying a SNES backup device just to play it on my SNES instead of an emulator.
